in 1996 Bi norwegian Business school introduced the Career fair for the very first time. On behalf of BI’s Business Committee, the

Career Fair Committee’s goal is to raise students’ awareness of possible career paths one can pursue after their time at BI. Today the Career Fair

is a yearly tradition where students are able to attend guest lectures, courses, exibitions and the finale Banquet, just as the students of ‘96

were able to. Over the years, the Committee has gained knowledge and expertise in company selection, and can today proudly introduce some

of Norway’s most profiled personalities and companies.

BI is one of Norway’s largest and most influential educational institutions, and numerous talented students graduate every year. The companies represented on the Career Fair are all very interested in getting to know you, and will do their utmost to stand out as attractive employers.

I urge you to carefully consider which industry and which company seems right for you. This is a task not to be taken lightly, and you should make sure you take the time necessary to do it thoroughly. Your first job will have a great impact on the rest of your career, and will hopefully open many doors for further career developments. You may be working for your first employer for many years, which is the case for many people. It is just a question of continues growth and development opportunities.

Being faced with the choice of your first employer, the Career Fair is a unique opportunity to meet the companies that you consider interesting. You should use this opportunity. Try to get

an understanding of the company’s core values and culture, and the quality of the working environment. Do they match your values? Check out potential employers by getting an impression of tasks, learning and development systems and further career opportunities. Do they match your ambitions? I am sure asking these questions will increase your chances of finding an employer that you are excited about – and that is excited about you.

The career fair is a golden opportunity for you as a student, at BI Norwegian Business School, to meet your future employee. It is similar to speed dating, as both the companies and the students get to know and learn a little about each other, potentially resulting in both parties wanting to take their initial date one step further, and maybe ending up going all the way.

Throughout this week, you will also get the opportunity to participate in interesting courses and lectures from many of Norway’s most charismatic leaders and entrepreneurs. This hopefully results in you being even more prepared for pursuing and securing that “dream job”.

Not everybody knows what their dream-job is, and for them, the career fair is just as important, as you can talk face to face to the company representatives, and ask them questions about their company, the daily work life, and their potential job openings. This will leave you better equipped, both as final-year applicant, but also as a first year student, wondering what subjects to choose in order to become an attractive applicant in the future.

The Norwegian job-market for graduates is still in decent shape, and much more so than the rest of Europe, especially the south, with Spain hovering with a youth unemployment ratio of 51%. Every day the newspapers tell us about highly educated young people who end up with a job well below their academic qualifications. I am not saying that this will be the situation in Norway, and there are many views on whether the world economy will stabilize and grow, or move further towards recession, but either way, I recommend getting a foot inside the door with potential employers as early as possible, as a lot of the factors determining the future economic situation are out of our hands.... at least for the moment.

You are extremely fortunate to be students at BI Norwegian Business School. The companies are here just for us; they spend hours and hours looking for that special candidate to hire, and by attending the career fair, and getting in touch with the representatives, you are making this job easier for them and yourself. A word of advice when approaching the businesses is not to ask them what they can do for you, but tell them what you can do for them!

Each company is granted a 2-minute window in which they will outline their programs and how to apply. Kommunalbanken’s staff is growing in numbers, at-tracting well-educated young people with a degree in economics and finance. In times of considerable financial turmoil, KBN has to meet growing complex-ity within the fields of regulation and financial frame-work. On behalf of the Norwegian maritime industry, The Norwegian Shipowners’ Association (Norges Red-eriforbund) launched a two-year trainee programme in 2005.

Since then, Maritime Trainee has involved some 40 companies in the Norwegian maritime industry as a whole; shipowners, shipyards and maritime equip-ment companies, rig companies, DNV, law firms, banks and shipbrokers, all of whom do business globally. Altogether some 150 trainees have conducted the programme or are still trainees.

The programme comprises work in the company in which you are employed, where you will rotate among various departments and roles; a mentor; six academic modules in Norway, Singapore and London, and Maritime Trainee Alumni.

Applying for a new job position is hard work and may take some time, but if you are well prepared, it can also be fun and exciting. The application process has several phases, and within these pages we focus on how you can improve your CV and application letter, in addition to advice on how to prepare yourself for interviews.

Deloitte’s tips and hints for your application process

Creating a CV should be one of the first things you do before entering an application process. Having a well-structured and thorough CV is one of the important factors for selling your profile and getting that important interview.

How to improve your CVA CV should give the reader a well arranged and immediate overview of what you have done, where, and when. If it is messy or very limited it may not get read at all. It is essential that you think of your CV as a sales document, rather than just a summary of accomplishments. It should capture the reader’s interest and highlight the points that are most relevant for the position that you are applying for.

Draft using a templateAs a starting point you may use a CV template that you deem to be appropriately arranged and structured. There are many examples available on the internet, but be aware that not all of these are up to the same standard. Some, for example, have large margins that leave little space for writing. Beware that Norwegian research shows that employers prefer classic CV templates to “modern”, “creative”, or colourful varieties (Arnulf, Tegner and Larssen 2010). When you have written a draft the improvement process can start, and hopefully the following tips can help you with the final touch.

Highlight your selling pointsDedicate more space to your most relevant selling points. Your most recent education and the most relevant job(s) should be included in some detail, whilst your position as Head of Student Council at Secondary school should be listed briefly. To send a signal regarding your academic focus you could for example write:

If you apply for a job where particular subjects are important to your qualifications, or you have a special interest for certain subjects you can mention that as well, but resist the temptation to list more than three or four subjects.

Show how your work experience is relevantIn terms of work experience, merely jotting down the year of employment, workplace and title will not do. You have to convey the assignments and areas of responsibility that you have held in order to give a more thorough impression of what you have been involved with, and what you have learned. Include any information that will make it easier for the reader to see why this is relevant.

Also participated at a Purchase Price Allocation course.

The same applies to any organizational/extracurricular/volunteer positions of some stature. Explain the extent of your related duties, and your areas of responsibility to highlight the relevance of the role.

Tailor-make the information to match the customerTailor your CV to match the position and the company to which you are applying. Remember – this is your sales document and it should be made to match the customer. In short, this means that you should allocate more space to explaining the things that are relevant to the job you are applying for. If you are short of space you can skip or summarize part-time jobs or voluntary/ organizational appointments.

A graduate CV rarely exceeds one page. Try to adjust the margins or reduce the sub-writing type size. Personal information at the top can often be written on one line rather than taking up five lines. As this is a sales document your personal info should not take up ¼ of the space anyway. If you have had many similar part-time jobs for different employers, you can summarize them as one post rather than mentioning each of them separately. E.g. 2004-2007 Various summer and part-time positions in the service industry

Put a face to your nameAdding a picture to your CV is becoming the norm, and this is especially important if you have been in touch with the company at a stand etc., so that you may stand out in the pile of applications. Remember to pick a professional-looking picture with a white background and a high enough resolution to look good on paper.

Writing a good CV takes time. Start early! Always ask others to have a look at your CV to ensure that it is clearly set out, and does not contain any spelling mistakes or typing errors.

Creating a job application that sellsA good application is another important factor for landing that important interview. A well-written application letter aims to answer two questions: •What is your motivation to apply for this particular job in this particular company?•Why do you believe that you are the best qualified person for this position?If you feel that these are tough questions to answer, then this might not be the right position for you.

A good application never exceeds one page. A common mistake is writing out your CV in full sentences, that is, repeating what the potential employer can already gather from your CV. Instead, you should be showing what you have learnt from your experiences, and how this makes you especially suited for this job.

Another common mistake is reeling off positive qualities, or qualities mentioned in the advertisement. For example, by simply writing “I am goal oriented, conscientious, sociable, industrious, engaged and structured” you are making an empty statement with no basis in experience or background.

Instead it would be better to choose three or four traits that you possess, and that appear relevant to the position, whereupon you offer examples of why you believe that these traits represent you. E.g. ”My academic achievements are good even though I have actively participated in two different student organizations, and held part-time jobs. This stands to show that I am hard working, goal oriented and structured”. When doing this you should read the job advertisement carefully. It will normally provide you with information about what qualities the employer will emphasize when hiring.

In the final read-through of you application you ought to be able to say what the purpose is of every paragraph, for example motivation to do the job, why your education makes you qualified, which qualities are transferable from previous work experience to the position under consideration, and what qualities you are in possession of that make you suited for the job. Do not mix too many subjects in one paragraph.

As with your CV, it is important that you ask someone to read through your application to check for language fluency, and spelling mistakes or typing errors.

The Interview

The format of the interview will vary from company to company. Some choose to conduct pure personality-focused interviews whilst others do case interviews, group interviews or even workshops. Ability-, intelligence-, or personality tests may also be part of the selection process. Some have multiple rounds of interviews, others may find one interview to sufficient. Regardless of the type of interview process, it is important to be well prepared, and to have a plan for making a good impression, and giving reflected answers. There is no clear right and wrong, just remember that you will always gain more from being true to yourself than attempting to acquire a position under false pretenses. We will now present some general tips for the interview process.

Pre-interview preparationsThe object of an interview is giving a good impression of who you are as a person. Keep in mind that the interviewer is hiring a colleague, as well as someone who is competent to do the job. In terms of impression-making it is important to be well prepared before the interview. You should be able to put your positive sides into words, and voice an opinion on which areas you wish to develop further (your weak spots). A good tip is considering which examples you may give to illustrate this. Another thing you should reflect upon is your actual interests, e.g. what tasks you enjoy, which areas you have experience with (quantitative or qualitative), what level of expectation you seek in terms of work hours, and to what degree you expect to be followed up upon entering a company.

You should get to know the basic background of a company before entering the interview. Relevant information can in most cases be found on the company website. Company knowledge, such as values, services offered etc. are examples of things that may be good to know. Furthermore you may be wise to prepare a set of questions to ask during or towards the end of the interview. Asking questions make you seem even more interested in the position offered by the company, and helps you to gain insight into the everyday experience that you would be facing.

What should you bring to the interview?•Application•CV•Grade transcripts•References from previous (relevant) employment•Reference overview (in writing)•The job description/ information about the position•Documents to show your previous work (assignments, articles, reports etc.)

However, not all companies check these documents in the interview, so it might be a good idea to ask in advance what they would like you to bring.

Although managing your way to a professional career may seem like a daunting task, you will find that the application process helps increase your self-awareness and you can make exciting discoveries about your want’s and can’s along the way.
