July 2014 / Vol. 22

It’s the late 1800’s in the northernmost region of River Diego and my Great Grandmother, Annie Reche, and her seven brothers and sisters are on the family buck-board and looking for something to do on a Saturday night. By this time, her father Anthony, had moved the family from Fallbrook to the present day Moreno Val-ley area. Back then, there was no Cactus Calendar to peruse for entertainment, so word of mouth had to do. Riverside and Hemet were nearby towns that held forth the kind of fun that could grab the attention of young people looking for a good time. Winchester was known for celebrity watching even though it was a dry town with no sales of whisky or other spirits allowed. Times have changed there. Meanwhile in southern River Di-ego, my Great, Great Granduncle, Vital Reche’s clan was looking for the same thing around Temecula, Es-condido and Oceanside. Again, without The Cactus Bob Review around to let them know where and when the major happenings were happening, it was difficult to find what we now have available in these pages and on our website. Somehow they managed, and a good time was had by all.As the title of the song by that noted writer and musi-

cian, Hank Williams Jr. says, “It’s a Family Tradition”. Thus I find myself taking those same routes my ances-tors took so long ago to find the same general things they were looking for. The selection of places to go and “Things to do Today and Tonight” has expanded a hun-dredfold, so this publication has much more to choose from and that’s just the way we like it. Here’s a small slice of the big pie that this desert paradise has pre-sented to me this past month.FRIENDLIEST BAR - Vinz Wine Bar in Escondido. This

downtown landmark is where you want to be when you’re in town on a Saturday night. Or any other day or night for that matter. Every person that I’ve talked to there is on your side from the minute you walk through the door. Vince and Gregg have a management style that makes the staff and the patrons meld together for a thoroughly great experience. Now that Dani P’s in Oceanside and The Comstock Bar and Grill in Escon-dido are making their presence more profound in these pages, I’m sure I’ll be able to bring you readers the Vinz Wine Bar entertainment schedule soon.PRETTIEST SMILE - BLONDE - Dani P. at Dani P’s in

Oceanside. I’m not above complimenting the owner of an establishment to curry favor, but that’s not the case here. Maybe it’s the fact that Dani P’s is about to cel-ebrate only their second year anniversary that keeps the smile on Dani’s face, but I get the feeling that the

ADVENTURES IN PARADISE

smile will be the same on their twenty second anniversary.PRETTIEST SMILE - BRUNETTE - Kristin at Rookies in

Oceanside. I actually had her say to me that I had the best job in the world. That being the carefree wandering in and out of all the juke joints and watering holes that abound in this great land of ours. It was nice to be reminded of how lucky I am to be doing this, and made me forget the deal-ing with printers and accounting and all the other endless tasks involved with publishing this magazine. I left with a smile on my face and I’m sure you will too. Thanks for the reminder Kristin.BEST BREAKFAST - The Sunday Brunch at Valley Fort

in Fallbrook. The selection was endless and afterwards I went out to the spacious grounds to listen to some great bluegrass music provided for the Farmer’s Market they hold there on Sunday afternoons. I always get a flashback to my Great Great Grandfather being at this same spot over a hundred and fifty years ago. Sometimes I can actu-ally see him sitting on his horse next to the stream that runs past this beautiful canyon. I can see why my forefa-thers settled this land.BEST ROCK & ROLL SHOW - The Little George Band

at The Garden in Temecula. The Temecula Wine & Beer Garden’s name has a bit of history to it too. When going into business years ago, the name had to be The Temecula Wine & Beer Garden, instead of the more common Beer and Wine Garden configuration that is often seen in other areas. The French Valley wanted to see wine first. The area isn’t called German Valley or beer would have come first.

Back in Them Thar Hillsby C.B. Reche Revised and reprinted from August 2013 CBR

One thing about River Diego that I really like is the wide open spaces. Miles and miles of undeveloped land where lizards and coyotes are the masters of their domain. Of course, here and there the humans have carved a niche out of the hostile environment. Some-times that niche includes fun and recreation. One such place I’ve visited recently is Rancho Deliverance. At the end of a four wheel drive road, and out of reach from most of civilization, this is a party oasis that harkens back to this area’s hot springs craze of the 80’s. The 1880’s

Around this oasis, and just as in the past, a large tent is set up. Then the food and libation is brought in. Unlike the 1880’s, since there’s no natural hot springs nearby, a large truck drops off a portable hot tub for the week-ends festivities.

The last time I was there, I was the last one up during a raucous all nighter. As I sat by the dwindling flame of the campfire, I suddenly became aware that I wasn’t alone.

I couldn’t see the man’s face. A voice from beneath his sombrero said to me, ”You look like you could use some of this.” He was holding out a bottle that looked like wine to me. “No thanks” I said to him, and added

“I like something a little stronger.”

“That doesn’t exist.” he said as he turned to walk away. I took a drink. I liked it. I took another. I loved it. “What’s that taste?” I asked the vanishing figure walk-ing away from the fire pit.

“Raspberry.” was the muffled reply I heard, along with hoofbeats moving away. “What’s that kick?” I yelled to the darkness.

The reply was so distant and far away that I couldn’t quite make it out. He might have said “If I tell ya, I’ll hafta kill ya.” Or it might have been, “What if I tell you it’s tequilla?” I couldn’t tell you for sure, and the man in the sombrero was gone.

When I woke the next afternoon, I asked the other party guests and our host about the stranger I had talked to. No one else had seen anything. There were no hoofprints either. I convinced myself I imagined the whole thing and went about packing my kit for the trek out.

It wasn’t until I was home unpacking that I found it. A simple bottle with a simple label that said only “La Roja.” I savored the remnants of the bottle that evening and repacked my bag for a long journey. I have tasted the nectar and long for the hive. And so a new quest begins. “The Quest for La Roja.”

THE ANCHOR BAR CLUB & RESTAURANTA REVIEW BY RAPHAEL GROVER

This is a restaurant review but, before I get into how delec-table the food was, I want to take a moment and give you a description of the atmosphere and the people within, both of which make the Anchor Bar more of an enjoyable expe-rience than your average bar and grill. First off, they have recently remodeled the restaurant area and have done a su-perb job putting together a fresh, clean and relaxing dining atmosphere. The seating is plentiful and comfortable and the tables are new and sturdy (which is important for those of us who still eat with our elbows on the table no matter how many times we have been scolded) in general, this cre-ated a more than acceptable eating environment. The staff are all very friendly and readily available, even the owners

greet you with a smile and warm sense of welcome. There is no waiting twenty minutes just to get your server’s attention, but they are also courteous enough to allow time to digest their rather extensive menu without breathing down your neck asking if you are ready to order. Alright, now that we have the atmosphere out of the way, let me regale you with the tale of my personal dining experience. When I first ar-rived at the Anchor Bar after a very taxing night of bar hop-ping with the infamous Cactus Bob, don’t get me wrong, he is very entertaining and there is never a dull moment, but it can wear on you after a few hours, as some of you know (not to mention, it isn’t the best idea to do on an emp-ty stomach). I was ravenous. The minute we walked thru the door we were greeted by the radiant smile of Shayna who has the platinum locks of a Hollywood starlet from the 40’s and 50’s and the charm to go with them. I became even more enthralled with her and the establishment she is employed by (“good job,” to whoever hired her) when she gave me a genuinely warm and welcoming hug. I told her I was famished and wanted to order something and I hoped I wasn’t too late, being it was a quarter to eleven pm. She told me as I headed toward the restaurant side of the build-ing, that it was closed already and my heart nearly skipped a beat, but she followed that the kitchen was still open and she could serve us food in one of the booths which are not newly remodeled but still very luxurious on the bar side

of the establishment which did wonders for my anticipation anxiety. She giggled (which she does a lot, not in that annoy-ing way but in a way that somehow adds to her already formi-dable charm) at my expres- sion of relief and gestured for us to sit down. Shortly after we ordered some beers, she brought us a couple of menus and we poured over them quickly. After a few short moments of contemplation, I decided to ask her what she liked best on their menu. She suggested one of their steaks which she was unafraid to admit to eating, adding that she was really a fat kid in a skinny body. There was immediate agreement from Matt who said ‘me too.’ I suggested that I was just a fat kid, no disguise, here, which was received with more than a giggle from the whole group (my desired response). Being that we are still on a bit of a budget (not that the steaks were expensive for steaks but merely expensive for my wal-let) and we had already been out on a money consuming bar hoping expedition, I asked her what else she would suggest and she immediately repliedThe Captain’s Burger which from its description in their menu sounded like the perfect remedy for the beer munchies that were rapidly consuming me from the inside out. I looked over to Matt for his opinion and was greeted with agreed enthu-siasm. I then returned my attention to Shayna and ordered two after which I asked if I could get mine with cheddar (per-sonally, I prefer it to swiss on a burger, even if it is sorta old fashioned and not nearly as trendy) and Matt inquired about

garnishing his with onion rings, turning to me to make a consensus on whether or not I would mind sharing a few of my fries in exchange for some of his onion rings- which, of course, I agreed to- always preferring variety of moder-ation than excess of anyone pleasure. Shayna responded with a nod and asked us how we would like them cooked (reminding us a very important detail in ensuring you enjoy your burger order) which we answered to with a consent-ing “ medium”. As she whisked away our menus we got up to enjoy a smoke and some conversation outside. More time must have passed then we noticed because it seemed like mere minutes before we were greeted by Shayna at the door telling us our food was ready. Matt and I shared a brief dialogue (reminiscent of Pulp Fiction), which consisted of enjoying the experience of coming back from a smoke and having your food waiting there for you when you return. As we sat down to our meal we were both impressed with the sheer volume of our burgers, I even inquired about a knife in order to divide mine in to more manageable proportions. We then set in on our fries and onion rings which were both golden in hue and contained that rare combination of crispy, yet light and flakey consistency and without any over greasiness that is so often missing from such deep fried deli-cacies, especially onion rings. After relishing in our delight we proceed on to an even greater state of enjoyment as we

bite into our burgers. My mouth was immersed in a flood of flavor, none of which were too over bearing, but a sea of complimentary elements almost impossible to describe. The meat was perfectly medium and contained a rich but subtle smoky flavor that can only come from great care in its grill-ing. The lettuce and tomato were fresh and not in excess but in proportionally complimentary fashion. All in all, it was truly a supremely satisfying meal. So much so that I was full about three quarters into my burger and still ate the rest, driven by my brains addictive response to its flavor. After, we relaxed into digesting what we had so greedily gorged. We sat there a long while munching on the remnants of our fries and finishing off our last two beers, all the while enjoy-ing the jovial atmosphere of the bar and its patrons. As we set off to leave I approached Shayna to pay our tab and it rounded out to about 30 bucks (which included two rounds of beers and both the burgers) not bad for such a delicious experience. I strongly suggest you head out to Anchor Bar in Hemet and get in on this, you won’t regret it and don’t forget to mention you heard about it from us (and maybe encourage them to help support our publication by telling them how great it would be if more people knew about their establishment).

By the way, my family name Reche that we see today in River Diego is French. It’s pronounced RuShay. Not richy or wretchy or all the other variations I’ve heard newcom-ers use. If I had one of those little accent keys on this keyboard, I’d put one over the second E. Let’s all start us-ing the correct pronunciation when we talk about Reche Road in Fallbrook or Reche Canyon Road and Reche Vista Road up in the Riverside / Moreno Valley area.Tangent? What Tangent? Oh yeah, it was Little George’s

Birthday Bash at the Garden and the whole band was spot on for it. You can catch their next show at The Gar-den in Temecula, Slam Dunk Sports Bar in Norco, Boon-docks in Corona or J. Carter’s in Murietta among the fine establishments where they ply their trade.BEST MUSICAL DUO - Papa Cass & The Whiskey Broth-

ers at The French Valley Cafe in Murietta. I had the plea-sure of playing with Papa Cass years ago with the band Full Frontal Noodity. He hasn’t lost a beat since those heady days “Around the Lake Tonight” with Land Shark and the exploding drummer we shared with Spinal Tap. Get on out to The German - I mean The French Valley Cafe for a really entertaining entertainer.PRETTIEST SMILE - REDHEAD - Deena at Slam Dunk

Sports Bar in Norco. Deena is just one of the sweeties (Can I say that?) at Slam Dunk. They have some of the best River Diego bands playing there every Friday and

Saturday night, and since the N.F.L. season is fast ap-proaching, I’ll be taking advantage of the plethora of big screen T.V.’s throughout this vast but comfortable cocktail lounge. If Deena isn’t there you’ll still get a smile from Lucy or Tawny or one of the other fine bartenders there. Say “Hi” for me, and “Tell ‘em Cactus Bob Sent Me.”BEST LUNCH - The “Smokin’ Meal Deal” at Sweet Baby

Jane’s in Hemet. This is some of the best eatin’ for us dedicated non-vegetarians around. Sweet Baby Jane’s has been recognized as “Best Barbeque” by other area publi-cations and now I know why. They also have a “Live Music Only” policy, and some of the biggest names play there. For great food and entertainment, it’s now a personal fa-vorite. Some years ago I sat in with the house band, but I thankfully wasn’t recognised on my recent visit. Hemet has a lively new downtown with numerous places to do some old fashioned “Bar Hopping” on foot. Just make sure you play it safe, and have end of the night arrangements made in advance. Check out “The Cactus Calendar” for their six nights a week entertainment schedule and get on down there A.S.A.P.BEST COUNTRY SHOW - The Johnny Cross Band at The

Sportsman Bar in Corona. Now don’t get me wrong, this band is Rock & Roll personified, but when they want to they can country like country should be done. I imagine these three musicians could play any style and be the best in show

Stepping Out

Holy frijole, today’s my birthday and I’m stepping out in my Sunday best.

With my darling wrapped around my arm, let’s put the Tequila to the test!

I’ll make a wish that fills the day with laughter and song and dance. Come with me baby, let’s get away.

I need some drink and romance.

Spin me round in circles till my feet are off the floor. Let’s hoot and holler, scream and shout.

Pass that bottle…gimme some more. You know what this is all about

so you better look out cause I’m stepping out.

I’m stepping out… I’m stepping out…

Whoops I fell down…

Pony Dream

There comes a pony in a dream to sweep you up and ride away.

You say you’re not prepared to go for fear that you’ll have nothing left to show

the ones that watched you fall apart and mended up your broken heart.

The happy horses, the joyous jockeys all standing at the edge of time.

And there you are with your little star prancing at your place in line.

Your pony rears and you cling onto whatever you can muster.

You both fall away to a brand new day into a starry cluster.

You ride along into the light. The stardust leads your way.

Your pony never tires of running night and day.

You ask yourself what place is this so far away from home? A voice comes to you, a chill runs through you and you are not alone.

Far in the distance I hear a voice that interrupts..

and my reverie is telling me..

“It’s time now to WAKE UP”

in any category I name. It was also great to hear keyboards. I can’t get enough keyboards and their key jockey / bassist is something special. A Temescal Canyon landmark. The Sports-man Bar should be experienced.BEST OPEN MIC - The “Sunday on the Lake” jam at P.K.’s

Roadhouse in Lake Elsinore. Mike Lewis is the host. After his veteran rockers set the mood in the first set, they turned things over to White Noise. These guys were described to me as “early Green Day”. They are four very young, energetic musicians with an astounding wall of sound that was refresh-ing to hear. Three vocalists is always a plus in any band, es-pecially when they can actually sing. I was talking to J.B. of “J.B.’s Rufus & Lowes Authentic Texas BBQ” who is the award winning chef at P.K.’s Roadhouse, and he couldn’t say enough about this up and coming band. As I enjoyed J.B.’s great BBQ ribs and chicken, I was treated to some wicked guitar solos when Mike Lewis returned to the stage and was joined by Land Shark of FFN fame. P.K.’s Roadhouse is firing up Friday and Saturday night bands again for the summer, so all you musicians should get ahold of the powers that be down there and get yourself booked to play there.BEST PUNK ROCK SHOW - The awe inspiring “Goodbye to

Sunlight Punk Show” at Morgan’s Tavern in Riverside. Mor-gan’s Tavern goes out of it’s way and out on a limb to bring the newest acts to River Diego. It’s always a party at Morgan’s should be their mantra. Especially on Friday and Saturday nights when the place is “The Place to Be”. The Touch Tunes juke box keeps the place jumping the rest of the time, and

there are also bands wandering in to play during the week. Again, check out “The Cactus Calendar” for their schedule.BEST REGGAE SHOW - Inhale at Jack’s in Riverside. It was

Taco Tuesday and I needed to get pumped up and mellowed down at the same time. The only solution to this condition is always some reggae with a little rock flavor and the sound of the trumpet. Jack’s has some great Friday and Saturday night bands too, so make your weekend plans with Jack’s at the top of your list. If Tacos and Reggae are your passion, Tuesday night with Inhale is your best bet.BEST SOLO PERFORMANCE - Carlos Reynosa at The Lum-

ber Mill in Idyllwild. The far eastern reaches of River Diego are alive with the sounds of music these days. The Lumber Mill now has live music Thursday through Sunday, to go along with their great food and good times in a small mountain town set-ting. As we get into the hot months of summer, this Mount San Jacinto high altitude destination will be seeing much more of this traveler. Carlos Reynosa plays on Thursday nights and the weekend is jam packed with music too. See “Things to Do” and “The Cactus Calendar” herein for more information.BEST DINNER - Steak and Lobster at Bob’s BBQ at the Win-

chester Inn in Winchester. The main course was profound, but it’s the details that set Bob’s and the Winchester Inn apart. The side salad was the freshest I’ve ever had, and the vegatables tasted like they were picked that day in the local fields (I was informed that they were). Winchester was a favorite town of Wyatt Earp in his “salad days”. The old gunslinger and law-man should have stuck around another hundred years and had Bob’s fare. They have a huge patio area with state of the art horseshoe pits, live entertainment and fire ring, so come on out and make a day and night of it.BEST SPONTANEOUS FREE FORM OFF THE ROAD MUSIC

- Scary Larry & The Bridge Burners at Lake House Tavern in Canyon Lake. Golf course views await the uninitiated during the day, and some music acts you will not see anywhere else are on tap during the wild nights here. I caught the “Drunk by Noon Tour” of The Bridge Burners show along with members of The Little George Band and 40 Years Late. This is the music that the River Diego musicians come out to see. A full cocktail bar and an extensive food menu are available and the staff is always friendly and helpful. And they are part of the entertain-ment. A personal favorite of mine.BEST BURGER - Mad Madeline’s in Temecula. There is a big

car show coming up there on July 13th, which will give you a great chance to partake in one of Mad Madeline’s wide choice of burgers. If you can’t make the car show, (Details on the back cover) get down there and try one on any other day. Great patio for dining, with those water misters you see in far away places with a desert environment. It’s right on the boardwalk of Old Town Front Street and a nice place to eat and relax and people watch.I guess I’ve been a bit long winded this month, but I know

there’s still more adventures out there that I missed putting down on paper this issue. I’ll get the rest next month, or if you want, send me one of your adventures for publication. I do have the best job in River Diego, but I’m willing to share my space with the citizens of this great land.By the way, have you come across the ghostly image of a buck-

board full of youngsters travelling the twilight trails? If they’re searching this paradise in the desert, and looking for some-thing to do on a Saturday night, please give them a copy of The Cactus Bob Review to help guide them to their destination.
