Kangaroo Island Join us for a highly enjoyable walking exploration of the wildlife and landscapes of remarkable Kangaroo Island, which has been likened to a giant zoo without enclosures! Our trip will take in all the best hikes and sights of this wildlife haven, which is also Australia's 3rd largest Island. More than one third of the island is dedicated to parks and wildness protection. The island is also surrounded by marine parks that protect the beautiful marine environment.
Wildlife abounds on Kangaroo Island; the ocean teems with fish, sea lions and little penguin colonies. Stand on the shore and watch migrating southern right whales and their calves whilst inland Kangaroos, wallabies, Koalas, echidnas and rare bird life thrives.
Each day you will travel out from our centrally located base and explore different aspects and walks throughout the Island. The food will be highlight of this trip as in the evening you'll enjoy meals of excellent local produce and wine, including eating out at a local winery. You'll be accompanied on your hikes by our highly experienced leader David Mitchell and another RAW guide who doubles as driver. You need only bring a daypack for the hikes and you'll be well looked after with rest stops and refreshments. We will be using local produce for our meals wherever possible and you can expect a great standard of food.
On the way back to Adelaide we stop in McLarenvale for some cellar door visits to round out a perfect trip and overnight in quaint Noarlunga township.

WILDLIFE HEAVEN
Kangaroo Island has been likened to a giant zoo without enclosures! Our trip will take in all the best hikes and sights of this wildlife haven, which is also Australia's 3rd largest Island.
Marine life and land based wildlife thrives here -‐ the island has been spared the damage done by introduced species and animal and bird populaDons have flourished. The Island also suffered less from the impact of European seIlement and retains more than half of it’s old growth vegetaDon.
The ocean teems with fish, sea lions and liIle penguin colonies. Stand on the shore and watch migraDng southern right whales and their calves whilst inland
Kangaroos, wallabies, Koalas, echidnas and rare bird life thrives. You may also see the Rosenburg Goanna’s darDng through the bush at up to a metre in length.

Supported walks - just carry a daypack
Our Kangaroo Island walks are very achievable by anyone of reasonable fitness and walking ability. the walks are moderate and often done as a separate morning or afternoon hike. The walking is not strenuous and you are transferred to and from each hike on different part of the island. At Seal bay we take a short guided walk with a ranger but most of the time you’ll be led by our experienced staff.
You’ll only need to carry a day pack on each day’s outing. RAW’s experienced guides are trained in First Aid and carry emergency communications ( handheld radios carried by the Leader (s) and Driver plus a satellite messenger to alert emergency services) giving you security and peace of mind outdoors.
We have an excellent track record with safety and our main leader David Mitchell also works with Alpine search and rescue teams in the wintertime, so we are very conscious of giving our guests a safe and enjoyable trip.
Sometimes the elements turn against us but we have contingency plans that allow us to make the most of every trip and still get you outdoors. .

When to walk?
RAW operates it’s Kangaroo Island trips in Spring and Autumn each year. September to November is springtime on Kangaroo Island and it is the best time to see rebirth of the birds and wild flowers. There are around 40 endemic flower species that are in full bloom in the spring.
Autumn on Kangaroo Island is a time for transition, a stunning time of the year with warm days and calm seas. The rain gradually starts to fall providing the wildlife with fresh water and grass to feed on. It is the perfect time of year to go hiking and bird watching and to see the Little Penguins begin nesting. The climate chart below relates to Kingscote.
