 Blackboard in a classroom

Completed latrine

After the completion of phase 1, the parents at the school started again to gather hard core rocks in

preparation for the building of classroom block 2. They also removed one tree from the site for the

next build. Construction on classroom block 2 started in mid-October.

By the end of October, the foundation for classroom block 2 was completed and the walls startedgoing up. The parents at the school have also done some additional leveling to the land around the

newest classroom block so that water will drain away from the building.

Agricultural Progress

All the dried beans were harvested in September, yielding about 150 kg. This was about half the

yield that was expected, as many of the beans were used to help feed the builders during the

construction of classroom block 1. The tomatoes were also harvested, though there was less yield

than estimated as heavy rains during the flowering period affected the number of pollinated buds

that could actually produce fruit on the plants. Once the majority of the crops were harvested, work was done to clear the fields in preparation for the next set of plantings. The rice continues to be

weeded and Mr. Abbas has done his best to try and keep birds away from the crop. Both the

weeding and scaring away of birds are ongoing tasks to ensure a good rice crop yield.

Farming tools were purchased in October to help with the tending of the plantings. This has made it

much more efficient for the parents and students to keep the plots well weeded. Richard, Mr. Abbas

and some of the students worked to add handles to the gardening tools (it is the norm to purchase

implements without handles and add the handles yourselves). Seeds were also purchased in

anticipation of the next phase of plantings.

By the end of October, new crops of maize and soybeans were planted. As there is seed left over from these plantings, the parents are working on clearing additional land so that the extra seed can

be planted as well. The new plantings have already germinated and are looking healthy.

The students are also helping Mr. Abbas build a semi-permanent chicken coop to raise chickens.

Student Progress

The students and parents at the school were all very excited by the completion of classroom block 1

and the latrine and have been very helpful in preparing for the building of classroom block 2. The

plan is for a special year end ceremony to officially open the new school buildings.

Richard worked with Mr. Abbas over the school break to improve on administrative aspects of the

school. When classes resumed after the break, much effort was put into preparing the primary 7

students for their exams. These exams were taken on November 3 and 4. The students found the

exams to be fair and are now waiting for their results.

Upcoming tasks

• Complete classroom block 2 by December

• Harvest maize and rice

• Weed and tend to new plantings of maize and soy beans
