Projek Kalsom 2013 Report

WHO ARE WE? OUR APPROACH ACCOMPLISHMENT WHO ARE WITH US?

FOREWORD FROM THE DIRECTOR

To our stakeholders,

We always believe that the best way to help the underprivileged is through education. For almost two decades we have never failed to organise our annual motivational programme to Form 4 students, who are mainly from the rural areas. This is our own unique way to address the issue of education inequality in Malaysia.

I am pleased to present to you Projek Kalsom 19 Report 2013, a compendium of our approaches in organising this year’s Projek Kalsom. My highest gratitude goes to my committed committee members who have been with me for the whole year in planning and finally executing this beautiful programme.

At Projek Kalsom, our mission is clear. We want to help as many underprivileged students as possible. We are inspired to see more successful youth. We want these students to dare to dream and more importantly, we want them to know how to pursue their dreams.

I am glad that there are many others out there that share this very mission with us. I must thank the 44 facilitators including the 5 non-Malaysians who have volunteered to be part of Projek Kalsom 19 and helped us to achieve this mission. Thank you for joining us in motivating and inspiring these young students.

To the participants, I believe this one-week motivational programme had certainly managed to gain a special place in your heart. All of you have had the opportunity to meet and learn from the best facilitators. I am sure that you have learned many things from them but always remember, “Do not seek to follow in the footsteps of the wise. Seek what they sought.” It is my personal aspiration to see all of you to become a professional in the next few years. I must stress here, we, the Committee and facilitators learned a magnitude of lessons from all of you as well.

To the sponsors and partners (UKEC and BSCS), thank you very much for the trust you have in us in organising this social cause. I hope you will show the same support to the future committee.

Next year marks the 20th anniversary of Projek Kalsom. To think again, it is amazing and unbelievable that a student-led charity project like this continue to live on for almost two decades. Let’s keep this Kalsom spirit high!

WHO ARE WE? OUR APPROACH ACCOMPLISHMENT WHO ARE WITH US?

Projek Kalsom is a motivational programme for Form 4 students who have excelled in their studies but are from less fortunate backgrounds. It is run by an independent committee made up of Malaysian students enrolled in local and overseas universities. This project is organised by Kelab Belia Kalsom in collaboration with United Kingdom & Eire Council for Malaysian Students (UKEC). Projek Kalsom is fully endorsed by the Ministry of Youth & Sports Malaysia since 2011. The programme runs for approximately one week.

The name ‘Kalsom’ was adopted from an earlier initiative in the 90s. Puan Kelthom Abdullah was a single mother struggling to make ends meet in Kelantan. Her children were forced to drop out of school, and her plight was given some media attention in 1993. Upon reading about her in the papers, a group of young Malaysian students in the UK decided to run a collection to help bear the education cost of her children. For the initial group of students, it was not enough to merely collect money. They decided to take it a step further, spurred on by the conviction that they had a greater role to play. They decided that given their youth, and being students themselves, they were in an excellent position to help encourage and assist students from lesser-developed parts of Malaysia to in their studies.

And so, during their summer holidays in the following year, they ran a motivational camp for the students of Jerantut, Pahang. It proved successful, and they decided to run it again the following year in Grik, Perak. Projek Kalsom has since been held annually, growing from strength to strength, and is now run with the full support of the Malaysian High Commission in London and Ministry of Youth and Sport.

Projek Kalsom 2013 Report

WHO ARE WE? OUR APPROACH ACCOMPLISHMENT WHO ARE WITH US?

Exposure to the wealth of post-secondary education opportunities. From past projects, we have seen majority of the students decided not to pursue tertiary education. This is due to either loss interest of with studies, lack of knowledge of educational pathways after secondary school, family obligations or financial difficulties. In this project, we will expose to them the options and opportunities offered in tertiary education. They do not have to do traditional subjects if they do not want to because they can opt for many other non-traditional subjects that might appeal to their interest. They are also exposed to non-traditional educational pathways such as by going to business courses to start up a business. In terms of funding and financial help, they will be introduced to all kinds of scholarships, grants, loans etc that are available for them.

English usage among students in rural areas. It is without a doubt that the grasp of the English language is an essential skill to survive in this globalised world and its importance is not limited to examinations purposes. However, the usage of this language is still at an unsatisfactory level, especially in rural areas. This whole project is conducted in English and we attempt to instill the required skills to increase the confidence among students to promote the use of the language in their daily conversation.

Academic and non-academic skills.Academic skills such as note-taking, smart studying and memorising skills are important for those who are going to sit for an important examination like SPM. Unfortunately, not all students are exposed to or possess the correct techniques for these skills. This is part of the reason why some of them perceive studying to be a chore. Throughout the programme, there were a lot of interactive seminars aimed to equip the participants with these skills. Apart from that, non-academic skills like leadership, teamwork, creative-thinking and entrepreneurial skills are as equally important and are highlighted. It is crucial that these students are well equipped with this set of skills, even if they choose not to further their studies. All these skills here are important not just for university, but for the university of life.

WHO ARE WE? OUR APPROACH ACCOMPLISHMENT WHO ARE WITH US?

INITIATEThe first arm of this year’s Projek Kalsom theme lends a hand to providing and developing an entrepreneurial, creative and innovative mindset in the participants’ mind. We believe that “initiate” provides a good starting platform for the participants of Projek Kalsom to be motivated to start up something, whether it is to drive their future or to begin a new course in their life.

“Do not wait for leaders,do it alone, person-t o - p e r s o n ” .

-Mother Teresa

RISE OF THE APES, SPELL-IT-RIGHT CHALLENGE Module Coordinator: Mohd. Zulikhwan Ayub and Muhamad Safrizal Kasri “Rise of the Apes” is a module created to improve the participants’ use of English, develop listening skills, to instill confidence to speak English in public and to promote creative-thinking. The module is conducted like a role-playing game. The story of the game begins at a planet where animals and apes live together. The apes are rising and are planning to conquer the planet. Only some of the animals can escape with the rocket. There are two stages for this game. During the first stage, each group will decide on an animal. Various animals were named from a platypus to a lion. Groups are not allowed to have the same type of animals. To encourage quick decision-making, the group must quickly decide on an animal, and send a representative to rush to the stage immediately after that. The group’s representative must also convince the facilitators on why they (as the animal) should be chosen to be in the rocket. Participants also had to convince thecrowd to enable them to win that place in the rocket. “Spell-It-Right” is aimed to challenge and increase the participants’ vocabulary, and to enable participants to have fun while using English. Each group was given 10 words to spell out. Group discussions were highly encouraged to find the correct spellings.

MODULES CONDUCTED

ON YOUR MARK Module Coordinator: Safiyyah Mohd FaridThis module was aimed to allow the participants to improve their studying and academic techniques. This module complements Projek Kalsom’s other sessions where participants shared their challenges encountered in school and while studying. Handouts were given to facilitate the execution of this modules. Some of the activities include identifying a suitable studying environment for themselves and reading skills. In addition to this, this session also included concentration tips, note-taking tips, setting priorities and time management. These skills have been identified as the most vital to be delivered to the participants for their success in the future. In addition to this, the module also used the aid of a video presentation and practical group sessions.

INITIATECRÈME DE LA CRÈMEModule Coordinator: Sharifah Nurdurrah Syed Mudzhar and Afyzim bin Mohd AzlanThis module is designed to build self-confidence and encourage proactive decision-making. It is important to impart the awareness of being confident and how to present oneself in public to the participants. The highlight of Crème de La Crème is “Johari’s Window”, where participants learned how to make and identify important and urgent decisions. Also, the session enabled participants to identify whether they are passive of assertive characters when it comes to making decisions. With such identification, they can work towards improving their decision-making.

IMPROMPTU SPEECHModule Coordinator: Haziq JanudinThis module was intended to boost the participants’ confidence to speak in public, to encourage the use of English, and to promote quick-thinking abilities. Participants were first given a sample of how the Impromptu Session will work with a demonstration by three facilitators. From a random draw, the facilitators picked up a topic and were given 30 seconds to gather their thoughts for their 2-minute speaking time. For the practical group session, participants were given 15 seconds to prepare a 30-second speech from a random topic such as “Ice-cream”. The time was increased in the subsequent rounds as they were given 30 seconds to prepare for a 1-minute speech, then 1-minute preparation time to speak for 2 minutes. All participants were required to speak and present their thoughts to their group facilitators. Their enthusiasm and participation were very encouraging and they became more confident with themselves as the session developed. The session wrapped up with a short Impromptu Session contest between groups. The best speaker was selected from each group. The winner of this contest was Manpreet Sikh.

FUTURE FAIRModule Coordinator: Ahmad Helmi AzharFuture Fair was designed to steer and introduce the participants to various courses, educational pathways and industrial work via direct interaction with the facilitators. Future Fair was also aimed to introduce participants to various alternative careers such as media, start-ups and the Arts. The facilitators are divided into several “booths” based on courses – Medicine and Life Sciences; Engineering; Economics, Finance and Business; Law, English and History; and other Alternative Courses. There was also a booth for students not planning to go to tertiary education and a booth for students who were unsure of what careers they want to pursue. The session was divided into two 30-minute rounds where participants were able to walk around and visit different booths. Participants were able to directly interact and ask facilitators questions on the courses, skills required and future career prospects. Some booths were very interactive such as Medicine where the facilitators were dressed in their doctor’s white coat and demonstrated the use of a stethoscope. The students were definitely excited after the session and walked away with a clearer idea of the courses they intend to pursue after SPM.

INITIATEINSIDE OUTModule Coordinator: Ahmad Izzuddin Mohamad Nor and Muhammad Farid Farhan Sahime The presentation started off with an introduction of SMART Objective concept. It is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-Bound. This is actually a technique used to strategically and systematically plan a goal. By having all these criteria adhered to, it could give a clearer view on the goal that a planner wants to achieve. After the first half of the presentation with simple examples as illustrations to the theory, the second half uses a more interactive approach of using comic strips to retain the audience’s attention. This comic-like presentation portrays the story of Dora and Nobi, who both want to achieve the same dream of becoming a great writer but using different approach of making it happen. It was a great tool to explain SMART and the audience seems to understand better since the story managed to connect all the concepts together with one applicable example. For the next 40 minutes, the participants were given a worksheet for them to plan their own personal SMART objectives with the guidance of their facilitators. The participants then took the SMART objectives home and told to paste it on their wall as a product of the module. In the last 20 minutes, 3 students were selected to tell the hall what their dreams are and how they plan to use the SMART objective to achieve their goal. It went very well and it was quite clear that they understood what SMART is although it could be improved by time. Inside Out achieved its objectives by giving the strategic tools for participants to plan out their pathways and fulfill their dreams. This is an essential and beneficial non-academic tool.

THE YOUNG APPRENTICEModule Coordinator: Muhammad Shazwan bin Salimin and Ahmad Helmi AzharThis module was inspired by the hit-reality TV show, The Apprentice. This module aims to challenge the participants with an intensive group discussion, negotiation tasks and the need to display good presentation skills. The task requires the participants, in groups, to design a battleship with a limited “budget” of RM2 million. Materials needed to be bought from a “seller”, and some limited resources needed to be negotiated between groups. Examples of the materials were manila card, cardboard and straws. Next, the ship was tested in the swimming pool in a “war simulation” to ensure that the ships were workable. Finally, the participants were required to present their ship and budget proposal to the “investors” and convince the floor that their ship is the best investment. This task also exposed the participants to a business simulation game and an example of a group case interview for scholarships and jobs. This module is successful and achieved many objectives by developing the participants’ persuasion skills, teamwork and creativity.

INSPIREThe second arm of this year’s theme focuses on inspiring our participants to fight for their dream. In the years Projek Kalsom was conducted, we found that lack of opportunities is a recurring theme for the students to stop pursuing their dreams. Students are often discouraged by this and this is why a set of modules was created to ‘inspire’ our participants. Sometimes, all that is needed is a bit of inspiration to achieve our dreams.

“The only thing that stands between you and your dream is the will to try and the belief that it is actually possible.”

-Joel Brown

MODULES CONDUCTED

FLY HIGHModule Coordinators: Wan Zokhri Idris, Ahmad Helmi Azhar and Abir Abdul RahimThis module kicked off Projek Kalsom 19 with a bang. The aim for this session was to instill a sense of confidence and self-belief in each of our participants and to give them a glimpse of the academic and career path that are available to them. This module also acts as the ice-breaker for the participants. Each of the facilitators also introduced themselves at the end of this session. For this module, participants were divided according to their respective schools while the module coordinators shared some success stories of the facilitators to motivate the participants. At the end of each sharing session the module coordinator would ask them to discuss with the group about the lessons that they have learned from the story they had just heard. Participants were then asked to volunteer to share with everyone the lessons that they have learned. This session was important because participants were given the opportunity to speak out on their own expectations of the programme.

INSPIRE TO ASPIREModule Coordinators: Almaz Ruslan and Muhammad Azad KhalilThis module was aimed to enable the participants to realise the potential within them and for the participants to find the reason why they should want to be successful. For this module, the module coordinator shared her personal story about how she achieved her dream when she was 16 even though she was not a straight A’s student. This was then followed by telling a story about a successful Malaysian singer, Yuna Zarai, who started playing the guitar when she was 16. The focus here was the fact that our participants are at an age when their dreams are shaped. This was followed by a relaxed session where groups wandered off to the beach to talk about their dreams and aspirations with their respective group’s facilitators. Some facilitators shared their personal stories about their academic journey to emphasize on the importance of working hard towards their own personal goal. Participants and facilitators also shared some personal tips on how to overcome such obstacles. Following this, the students came back inspired and we ended the session by singing “Gemuruh”, Kalsom’s unofficial theme song.

INSPIREA BETTER MEModule Coordinator: Saiful Azmi“A Better Me” was created to allow participants to reflect upon themselves the importance of being a good person and to have strong internal character in order to be successful. The module coordinator took examples from tales of prominent Muslim figures but emphasised on the shared values between all religions that encourages us all to be a good person in life. At the end of the session, participants were asked to reflect on the lessons learned from the stories that were shared.

REACHING FOR THE STARModule Coordinator: Nazurah Malek and Nik Syakirah Nik AzisThe aim of this module was to teach the participants the importance of failure before achieving success. More often than not, participants get discouraged when facing failure therefore it is important to encourage them to take the brave step to get back up whenever they face failure. The module was executed by telling a story of a homeless girl that managed to enroll herself into Harvard as well as a video of an Olympian who injured his muscles in the race but still managed to finish his race. Students were encouraged to find their own form of inspiration, be it a poem, a song or a person to help motivate themselves to achieve their dreams. The main message here is to show that nothing is impossible if we set my mind on it. This module hopes that participants can now seek for their own sources of inspirations.

JOURNEY TO THE FUTUREModule Coordinator: Danial Zikri and Afiqah NadhirahThis module was created to expose our participants to the opportunities available for them to pursue their dreams. Alternative career routes were also discussed to cater to those who are not academically inclined. It is also intended to equip our participants with the necessary skills to ace an interview. This module started off by asking the participants to write on a piece of paper about their dream course, university and the scholarship or any financial aid that they want to aim for. Participants were then picked at random to share their dreams with the crowd. This is done to know the scope of universities and scholarships that they do know prior to this module. Participants were then handed with lists of local public and private universities as well as lists of scholarships available for various courses both for local and overseas programmes. We then went through the lists with the participants to broaden the scope of the opportunities and pathway available after SPM. Next, facilitators were called upon individually to share with the participants about their experience with the application process for their scholarships/sponsors. This is then followed by a mock interview session. Facilitators were given a set of frequently asked questions during an interview and they were assigned to a group to conduct the session. This module ended by asking the participants to rewrite their dream course, university and the scholarship that they want to aim for. This is to see if there were changes made as they have learned a wider scope of opportunities available after SPM. Participants were then asked to share their dreams with everyone.

INSPIRESACRIFICUS (Latin for Sacrifice)Module Coordinator: Hazieq RiefdyThis module was aimed to educate participants regarding the reality of life which requires not only hard work but also sacrifices in order to achieve an objective. This is indeed important to ensure the students are equipped with adequate preparation and understanding to face the reality of life. In addition to this, it also encourages altruism within them in order to produce not only excellent human capital but also an emphatic society. Participants were divided into separate groups in order to create competition. This is done through dividing two teams based on a common characteristic, in this case gender. Two representatives were then chosen from the two groups respectively. Each representative symbolizes a medium to achieve an objective. An objective was set; the first team to retrieve the item(s) required by the module coordinator and equip it onto each representative respectively earns a point. At the end of the game, we relate the lessons learned through this activity with daily life.

THE BEGINNINGModule Coordinator: Arishah NazeriThe objective of this module was to recap the topics and lessons learned from Day 1 to Day 4 of Projek Kalsom 19. To conduct this module, participants who were chosen or volunteered shared what they can remember about the topics presented to them and this is done by going through Day 1 to Day 4 itineraries. Participants were then given 7 minutes to do a 3-minute group presentation of what they have learned from the programme and how it can be applied in real life. The presentations were commented by facilitators in charge of the group as they know best the progress of the individual students within their group. This method also allows the facilitators to give a few last words of what can be improved. Plenty of praises and good advice were showered from the proud facilitators. At the end of this session, a hand-banner was done by everyone to symbolize a promise to Projek Kalsom that what have been taught will be applied in real life.

INVOLVEThe third facet of Projek Kalsom 19’s theme is “Involve”. We firmly believe in the importance of social engagement and its power of benefiting both parties; in our case, the students and the facilitators. The modules that fall under this theme are intended to provide a good platform for both parties to engage with each other, and also for the students to showcase the skills that they have learnt throughout this program.

“Tell me and I forget.Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn”.

Benjamin Franklin

BARRIERS BE GONE 1 AND 2Module Coordinator: Munir Naqiuddin, Muhammad Safwan Yusof and Sara RijaluddinThese modules were aimed to break the silence between participants and facilitators on the first day, in order to ensure both parties are ready to work together for the rest of the week. It allowed participants to get to know each other and also, to literally break the ice. The module started where the students, still scattered within their school groups, will try to group themselves via the instructions given. For example, they had to group themselves by boys and girls, by month of birth, and by height. Then, they were put into their permanent groups where they had to introduce themselves to their new teammates. Later, a “blanket game” was played, when the groups are divided into two, and they each must recognise their teammates once the blanket screen was drawn. For the next part of the session, the teams were given their group identity. This was done by the teams spelling out the name of the flower that appeared on the screen, such as Tulips or Lavender, and the team with the correct spelling “earned” their team name. This indeed spurred a sense of competition in the group. The session wrapped up with Passing Me and Riddles Game, further activities to build the bond between teammates and promote teamwork.

MODULES CONDUCTED

VENI, VIDI, VICIModule Coordinator: Muhammad Zamri Abdul RahmanThis module aimed to instil one of the most important soft skills to be learned; teamwork and team communication. In this module, participants were required to play balloon war games. Teammates had to work together to “attack” the other groups by bursting the balloons attached to their legs. However, teammates must also ensure that their fellow teammates are protected. The team with the most “survivors” win. It was great to see the winning team had 7 members out of 10 still standing at the end!

INVOLVE1, 2, 3...ACTION!Module Coordinator: Muhammad Asri Yaacob and Syamsul Fitri AnawarThis module was executed to instil creative and critical thinking among participants as well as the importance of teamwork and strengthen the use of English among participants. In addition to this, it is also done to discover our participants’ hidden talents. For the first part of this module, 3 members from each group were chosen and one material was given to them – every group gets a different material. Participants were then given 30 seconds to prepare 3 different stories regarding the usage of that particular material. Person A will tell the story while B and C will act them out. In the 2nd part of this module, each group was given a set of pictures and 1 minute was given for the facilitators to show the picture to the first person in the line before the picture is taken back. The same person was then given 1 minute to describe the picture to the second person using the English language only. The same process was repeated by the second person until the second last person. The last person on each group will then be given a piece of A4 paper with a marker pen to draw out the picture based on the description from the second last person. The final picture will then be compared with the original picture. This module was also done to show the importance of paying attention to even the smallest details which is an essential skill in life.

CULTURAL NIGHTModule Coordinator: Nur Syarafina binti Che Mohd Sabri and Muhammad Asri YaacobThis module could lay a claim as the most anticipated session by participants and facilitators alike. It is a chance for the participants to showcase their creativity and performing skills on the stage via producing an educational cultural show. Most importantly, this is a platform for participants to use English fully and acts as a confidence-booster. This was also the last night of Projek Kalsom, and it was wonderful to see all the friendship and team bond that had blossomed over the week. There were many shows that night, ranging from traditional dances, Boria, Dikir Barat, sketches, a fashion show and singing. It was very interesting to note how the participants work very hard to create English lyrics to the traditional Malay Dikir Barat, Boria and Sajak. Many of the participants were dressed to impress in beautiful traditional outfits, fitting the night’s grandeur. The participants definitely worked hard to make the best show possible despite the very limited preparation time given. The CCP facilitators wrapped the night up with a dance act featuring music from around the world. The tracks range from Swahili music to a James Bond soundtrack. Participants were definitely entertained with this cultural exposure. Awards were given out to the Top 3 performances – Tulips, Hibiscus and Orchid. Three “Judges Choice Awards” were given out as tokens of recognition, to two talented performers, Afzan and Aida, and to Tulips for coming up with good scriptwriting and a great scene. The night came to a euphoric close.

INVOLVECCP MODULESModule Coordinator: Matthew McIntyre, Joe Richards, Valeriya Yuskevych, Joshua Vuglar, and Romana KhanFor the first outdoor game, all the participants crossed hands in their groups, and had to use teamwork and leadership skills to untangle themselves. Secondly, there was a race involving water balloons between the ten groups in which all participants of each group formed lines, in which participants had to say English adjectives before passing the water balloon to the next person in their line. Thirdly, there was a dare game conducted in which members of each group had to perform dares in order to accumulate points. Participants were encouraged to issue instructions in English, and had to use soft skills of persuasion and leadership in order to succeed. In the second game, students had to use English vocabulary, and had to work cohesively as a team to do well. In the third game, the main idea was to ensure students went outside their comfort zones and were not afraid to be bold. The idea for every students to have an individual dare was designed to encourage even the most shy and introverted students to get involved. In addition, many of the dares involved using English, such as dares which involved students having to interact with CCP facilitators in order to find out information.

CULTURAL PROGRAMMEModule Coordinator: Hazieq Riefdy and Mohd Zulikwan AyubProjek Kalsom 19 did not stop at just to be of service to the underprivileged students. We advanced our community service programme to benefit the greater part of society. In other words, we strive to reach more Malaysians. Through our new initiative, Commonwealth Cultural Programme(CCP); 15 university students including 6 non-Malaysian participated in various volunteering services including giving out food to the homeless in Kuala Lumpur in collaboration with PERTIWI Soup Kitchen as well as our own programme called “Spread the Love”. Apart from that, these students were brought to Felda Keratong 1 in Pahang for Foster Family Programme which saw the involvement of more than 8 families. During their four days-stay in Felda Keratong 1, they were exposed to the reality of lives of those who live in the rural areas. The spirit of “learning from each other” was enhanced through this programme. Two one-day motivational talks to students from SMK Keratong and SK Keratong that benefitted more than 390 students were also organised.(more on page 27)

AWARDS

Miss Almaz Ruslan, the winner of Marcus Ng Award for Best Facilitator of Projek Kalsom 19 joined camp with hope to guide the students to be successful in their future endeavour. Throughout the camp, she felt wonderful learning that the camp has turned into a dream and motivational hub for the students. In addition to this, she learned that in reality, not everyone gets the opportunity to speak English fluently, or get into a good school with good grades in every exam, or have sufficient money to pursue their education. Her advice to society is to embrace the blessings bestowed upon them through giving back to those less fortunate.

”We realised the importance of guiding the youth to choose the correct path and hence, create knowledgeable individuals for our country.” Almaz Ruslan, Marcus Ng Award Recipient and Projek Kalsom 19 Facilitator

Salma Mohammad – Methodist Girl School Kuantan

How are you feeling after Projek Kalsom? After Projek Kalsom, I was very inspired. It truly opened my heart to discover new things, meet new people, and involve with the things that are happening around me.

What was your initial expectation about Projek Kalsom?Honestly I thought it was going to be one of those typical motivational camps where the participants would be screamed at and treated harshly, so as to push us into motivation. However I was proven very wrong by the first introduction to the camp and to see all the facilitators being all friendly and outgoing!

What is you advise to your peers at Projek Kalsom?I’m not sure how to put it into my own words, so I’ll quote one of my favourite writers, Paolo Coelho. “And, when you want something, the entire universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”

What is one lesson that you will always remember from Projek Kalsom?I will always remember that the fact that everyone is the same. We all have the same potential; it’s only our actions that differentiate us.

How are you feeling after Projek Kalsom has ended?I still have the buzz of Projek Kalsom, I’m now applying all the things I was teaching the students into my own life.

What was your initial expectation of Projek Kalsom? My initial expectation was that we would be teaching English to under privileged kids and that, at the end of the week they would have learned something new. Little did I know they would go away with so much more confidence and maturity.

What were the lessons learned from Projek Kalsom? The lessons that were learned from PK were that your success is only limited by how much you prepare for it and that turning your potential into results requires hard work.

Describe Projek Kalsom in 3 words.3 words to describe Projek Kalsom: inspirational, humbling and unforgettable.

What is your advice to these students? My advice to the students, never give up your willingness to learn and better yourselves.

What is your hope for these students? My hope for the future for the kids is that I get to meet them one day on a professional level, be it at university or out in industry after they have graduated from university.

Hajar Nur Asyikin, an enthusiastic participant of Projek Kalsom 19 who has a strong will to get into Balliol College, University of Oxford.

Hajar Nur Asyikin-SMK Abdul Rahman Talib

What is your plan after SPM?I have planned my route for myself with the help from PK19 facilitators and I am working very hard, day and night to make sure that my dreams will come true. After my SPM, I plan to get a scholarship to further my studies abroad. To be frank, to Balliol College, the University of Oxford, United Kingdom. I’m going to take Chemistry course.

How are you feeling after Projek Kalsom? After PK19, I felt very motivated and I’m working harder and smarter. I start to believe that one can achieve anything if one believes and put his heart to it. PK19 changed the way I see everything. PK19 was very phenomenal. Even before it started, I was overwhelmed to be part if it. I expected it to touch me emotionally and it did. Not just that, my memories and experiences at PK19 are very meaningful things that I will treasure forever.

What is you advice to future participants of Projek Kalsom?I had the time of my life at Kalsom Project 19 and I want the future participants to feel the same way I did. It will be a total waste if they do not because I promise that Kalsom Project is seriously something. It was very different than the rest. To the future participants, I advise them to just go with it. Feel it. Raise the bar and be bold. Take the chance. It is your time so use it well and go with the flow. Where else can you get this kind of chance? I promise, if you follow all these, this programme will be nothing but worth every effort and seconds you spend for it.

What is one lesson that you will always remember from Projek Kalsom? One lesson that I’ve learnt from this programme and I will never forget is that I am very powerful of my future. There are so many meaningful lessons that I have learned but this one is what drives me towards my future. I promise PK19 that one day success will bow to me.

Malaysia Truly Asia – Part ITo help us promote Malaysia, “Malaysia Truly Asia” brings everyone to the heart of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur as starting point of Commonwealth Cultural Programme 2013 (CCP 2013). On 19th August, the participants explored Kuala Lumpur from the famous markets such as Central Market to Petaling Street Market and skyscrapers such as Kuala Lumpur Tower. As it is important to showcase our country’s landmark, we brought them to the tallest twin building in the world, the Petronas Twin Tower.

Post-Projek Kalsom 1931st August - 3rd September 2013

Ganu KitaOn the 30th August, we departed in search for serenity at a calm stretch of beach in Cherating as participants were allowed to rest after 5 days of the inspiring yet hectic Projek Kalsom. As a part of our effort to promote Malaysian culture, “Ganu Kita” is an initiative to include the culture experience of the east coast of Malaysia. On 31st August, we travelled north to Kuala Terengganu to attend a traditional Malay wedding as part of a promising Malaysian experience. They were led to later see handcrafts made of rattan, hard-tempered brass to traditional batik silk and songket and even “keropok” or fish crackers. On our way back to Kuala Lumpur on 1st September, we continued our journey to Kapas Island via speedboat located 40 minutes away from Kuala Terengganu for a day trip. The island managed to demonstrate the natural beauty of Malaysia to participants. The travel was worth it as the promised scenery and the beauty of the island testified for itself; participants who snorkeled the reefs discovered this to be true.

Batu CavesOn 2nd September, we visited the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur and visited Batu Caves. This visit reminded them about the cultural diversity and freedom to practice religion in Malaysia. Upon reaching the final chapter, we had our final dinner and awards giving ceremony at Pavillion, Kuala Lumpur. On 3rd September, participants departed for their final destination to mark the end and success of inaugural Commonwealth Cultural Programmeme 2013.
