MARCH 2017 EDITION
Hello Everyone, Goodness is about character - integrity, honesty, kindness, generosity, moral courage, and the like. More than anything else, it is about how we treat other people. Dennis Prager The opening of the new development of 30 beds has been delayed by about two weeks at this stage. It is unfortunate but unavoidable as we must get all the certification certificates in place before government will permit us to admit residents into the new section. As at the time of writing we anticipate the first admission to be the 20th March 2017 but will those awaiting placement informed. Thank you to residents who have been so very tolerant of the disruption during the development. Apologies for the lateness of this monthly edition of the Kaloma Newsletter. We have all been so busy with the development, home care accreditation and just the usual workings of aged care that it out a few days late. Melissa Reeves and Carolyn McKay who are both second in charge to the CEO position attended a very informative workshop in Aged Care Management and Leadership recently with me recently. It was an excellent opportunity to introduce Melissa and Carolyn to industry leaders. Congratulations to Bec Heitzmann who has been appointed Lifestyle Coordinator. Bec will take on this position as soon as we start admitting new residents. Bec's role will be to manage the Lifestyle Team including rostering and ensuring the standards are being met in terms of Standard 3 of the accreditation standards in particular.

Welcome to Astrid Littlewood who has joined the lifestyle team. My goal is to have an evening program for a few hours for those residents who like to stay up later. Lisa Gardoll will also be doing some of these shifts. If any staff are interested in joining the Lifestyle Team then please speak to Bec. We are still recruiting for registered and enrolled nurses, personal carers, cleaning, laundry and kitchen staff so if you know of anyone interested please ask them to apply. Clinical Manager Carolyn McKay, representatives from both pharmacies and our IT representative James Cooper attended a webinar with me recently regarding the TelstraHealth (iCare) medication management software program. We are still looking into software programs as it will cost around $70,000 to implement the software and to train staff and both pharmacies. Staff - only two applications have been received for the $2,000 Kaloma bursary which will be announced at Kaloma's annual staff awards in April. I urge those of you who are studying and paying for your tuition to apply for this bursary. Please ask for nomination forms from Claire or Melissa at Reception. Kaloma will be leasing a clothing labelling machine and charging $1 per label. If you wish for the laundry staff to do this for you please ask to speak to Housekeeper Judi Batterham. Can residents and families please ensure all clothing is labelled before it comes on site. If you require the labelling services of laundry staff then please ask to speak to Judi. Please do not put these items into use without a permanent marker ink pen being used whilst we wait for the labels to arrive as they need to be ordered. Alternatively you can order woven labels on line. Please do not purchase the iron on labels as they melt and cause skin irritation when worn. Please speak to Judi also if you have missing items of clothing as there is a hanging rack in the laundry for unmarked clothing. Once again I ask staff to take more care of residents clothing - laundry staff are still having to soak clothing items as lipstick is being left in pockets of residents clothes. Residents and family are understandably upset about the damage to their clothing. The laundry staff pride themselves in returning residents clothing in good condition and you make their jobs very difficult when you neglect to check pockets. At the most recent Residents Meeting Residents indicated that they continue to be satisfied with the standard of care and service received from all staff. High praise is consistently given to maintenance, cleaning and laundry staff. Kaloma turns 30 years old in August 2017. We plan a celebration at Kaloma but also will be launching the 3rd 10 year history book about Kaloma. Thank you so much to the family history group who are assisting Julia Telford, Nicole Campbell and Kaloma with getting the stories together and launching the book. Jed Eglington will be video taping some of the oral histories of residents. A number of morning teas are planned so that residents can get together for an opportunity to talk about their history and have this information 'captured' in writing and on video for future generations. The Lifestyle Team will set the dates with Nicole/Julia and let you know. The book will be for sale from August 2017.
Residents can I ask please that you allow any out of date food in your rooms or fridge to be discarded by staff. Out of date food can cause food poisoning and make you very ill. Also family and friends bringing in food please remember to record the food in the Food Register located at the sign in desk. You must avoid bringing chicken and egg products to residents. All food must be stored in a container with a lid please. A reminder to family if you have a concern or complaint about care issues when you visit to please ask to speak to the Care Supervisor on duty, not the Care Staff. Care staff are to seek the support of the Care Supervisor if a concern is raised. Comment and complaint should be seen in a positive light to enable us to improve our care to residents. Personal Carers are directed to seek the support of the Care Supervisor if a complaint/concern is raised. Always log the concern/complaint on the SARAH system so that it comes directly to me as an e-mail. Small fires soon turn into big ones if prompt attention is not given to the matter. I am always very happy to deal with any concerns and ensure that the person feels heard and listened to. Thank you to Lifestyle Officer Lisa Gardoll who is leading the Music and Memory Program which we are most excited about. We are using the funds donated this year by the annual $10,000 Vern Kleinschmidt Foundation grant for this project. We very much look forward to having the program up and running by the end of the year. Thank you to Paynter Dixon for donating a lovely CD to add to our music collection. Families, if Lisa contacts you for history of music which your loved one may have enjoyed your assistance would be most appreciated. . A reminder to staff and residents that the smoking legislation permits only them to smoke on Kaloma land and using the same rules which were put in place some years ago. Food and cigarettes are not to be consumed in the same place or at the same time. Thank you for your understanding. Staff Awards were not done this month due to the lateness of this edition and so few nominations. Future planning for your own future care and service needs is imperative if you wish to be part of the decision making about what happens to you if you need care. So often I see where older people put off planning for their future care needs as it can be confronting to think about. However so often I find that if a crisis occurs then others have to take on that responsibility as you no longer are able to. Please consider planning ahead. Complete an Advanced Health Directive with your doctor to say what and how much you want done for you in the event you cannot tell anyone. It is such a great pressure on family to make these decisions when really, you are the only one who knows exactly how actively you want to be kept alive. One of the great concerns is that the Darling Downs Health Service will not permit older people from our community to await placement at Kaloma, at the hospital. Please don't put yourself in a position where you haven't sought the help you need to either stay at home safety and as independently as possible or sought Kaloma admission earlier. Our waiting list is long and growing each week. We do not have vacancies and are unlikely to have a room just when you want one. Kaloma's Home Care Program is an excellent opportunity to stay in your home for as long as possible. I try to convey to older people who are needing help at home that if you accept assistance now then you can conserve energy for the tasks you really want to be
independent at. If you are interested in a home care package at home please you or your family telephone on 46711422 and ask to speak to me Penni Roberts. We can arrange an assessment by the Aged Care Assessment Team by making a referral on-line to the My Aged Care website. A reminder for residents of Yelarbon to Toobeah that Kaloma Home Care Program can provide a service to you, not only Goondiwindi town.. Please phone me at Kaloma on 46711422 should you wish to discuss how our excellent home care program service can support you to stay in your home for as long as possible. A reminder to anyone who would like to receive this Newsletter that if you would like it e-mailed to you then all you have to do is to contact Kaloma reception and provide your e-mail address. Any savings we can make on postage is most appreciated.
As always thank you to our wonderful staff for your patience and good cheer during this development. Welcome to our many new staff and wishing you every success and enjoyment in your new role.
Our Kate is gets married next month on Easter Saturday at our home. Kate has appointed her father Pete as the wedding planner and he is busy getting the lawn green, the garden in order and measuring up for the 'fairyland lights' them. . The marriage ceremony takes place on the fishing deck with stunning old gum trees in the background. Kate turns 30 on 1st April. Hard to believe how quickly the years go.
Penni Roberts
Chief Executive Officer
Hello and welcome to our March edition of the Kaloma chronicle. Their will be a letter going out later this
month enquiring about what services clients would be liking over the Easter period next month as Public
holidays are charges at a higher service cost.
There were big changes to home care packages on the 27th of February - home care package reforms came
into force- No longer will home care licences apply to aged care providers, Instead referrals will be made to
the My Aged Care website, the Aged Care Assessment team will assess as they currently do and a package
will be awarded to the elderly person in need. The commonwealth government will not be allocation any
additional Home Care Places to meet the growing demand except for the annual increase. This means
elderly people will be waiting longer for home help. If you need any assistance with navigating the My
Aged Care Website please phone Penni Roberts at Kaloma 46711422 who is more then happy to assist you
with referrals to home care and Kaloma.
On the 31st of January we had our 3 yearly accreditation and I am pleased to report that we passed and did
extremely well. This would never have been possible without our wonderful, dedicated team of home care
employees, ceo Penni. and our home care clients. I would like to thank our clients that were available to
meet with the accreditors and also speak to them on the phone.
Due to the uncertainty of home care packages our operating hours are as follows Daily 7.30am until 1.00pm
however these can change to reflect our current clients needs, if you require assistance to appointment
please give at least a weeks notice so we can assist you with this. Out side these hours please call 000. We
thank you for your understanding at this time. I urge you to tell your friends about our wonderful service.
The aim of Kaloma's home care program is to assist clients to remain in their own home while enabling and
encouraging them to do as much as they are safely able to do for themselves. We are here to offer any help
you may need to assist you to remain at home for as long as you can. By excepting a little bit of help when
you first need it, will help promote your confidence, conserving your precious energy for the tasks you
can perform independently.
We would like to remind all our clients that any excess in their budget is carried over each month and the
budget can only be used for services we can provide to assist the client to remain in their own
homes for example: Personal hygiene, meals, house keeping, laundry, shopping it can also be used
to pay for carpet cleaning, cleaning of windows, mowing lawns, gardening, ironing services,
physio (as long as the provider has an abn) etc a piece of equipment ie: wheelie walker, mobility
scooter, pressure cushions as long as approved by Doctor. It can not be used to pay bills,
medication, rents/mortgage, cashed out or used for a holiday.
We would like to welcome Mr s Biddy Rose, Carmel Thompson and Margaret Piedl to our home care
package program we look forward to getting to know you. Peta Sue had a lovely relaxing sea break away at
the beginning of February. ward to getting to know you.

NEWS FROM COMMUNITY
Very Exciting news- Kaloma new beds are set to open this month.. We cant wait to have a look at the
beautiful new extension and gardens once they are finished. We would like to remind all our clients that you
are welcome to attend any activities at Kaloma please refer to activity calendar in the chronicle and notify
our friendly home care staff so arrangements can be made.
INFECTION CONTROL- It is extremely important that if you or your live in carers are feeling unwell
(cold or cough, flu, vomiting, diarrhoea, general unwell) that you contact the coordinators: Jo 0411031136
or Peta-Sue 0429031135 before carers arrive to your home so that they can wear appropriate PPE (personal
protective equipment) before they enter your home to help minimise or stop the spread of infections. It is
too late once they have entered your home as they have been exposed and can then pass this on to other
members of the community.
We would like to wish a big happy birthday to our March Clients,
Stella McGovern
&
Carmel Thompson
we hope you have a fabulous day surrounded by family and friends.

Hello Everyone,
Its March already. Time surely does fly. We welcome Jess Frelek to our Lifestyle Team. Jess has been a Carer
at Kaloma for one year and with the restructuring of the Lifestyle Program Jess joined our Team in February.
In February we were very busy taking down the Australia Day Decorations and preparing for Valentine's Day.
Brigalow stood out with lots of pink and red love hearts/ flowers arranged by the residents as well as a big
Happy Valentine's Day Sign and fairy lights. It really stood out and looked beautiful.
Thank you so much to the Resident's for making this day possible. We were all busy little bees cutting pictures
out, painting, gluing, laminating and eventually putting everything together for display. Also in February
residents have been involved in Fitness Classes with Kate every Tuesday and Thursday, Painting classes,
scrapbooking, card making, bingo, Happy Hour, morning and afternoon walks, crossword puzzles/quizzes,
skittles and much more.
Fingers crossed it starts to get cooler in March as there are lots of activities planned outside in the garden for
Brigalow. Its a beautiful atmosphere outside so please weather be kind to us all.
The Lifestyle Team and the residents are coming together with ideas on how we can decorate Brigalow for
special occasions.
We look forward to many celebrations coming up including, Easter Luncheon, Anzac Day, Goondiwindi Show,
Mother's Day, St Patrick's Day, Red Nose Day, Father's Day, Racing Week for Melbourne Cup and of course
Volunteers Day.
Stay safe, cool and happy,
Love From
Jess, Carol, Carey and the girls in Brigalow

Hello to all,
Here we are!! the time has come the weather is cooler (Im dreading winter) and our building is
almost done......How stunning it is...... all our walking paths are in the process...
This month we did manage to get a little drive in and headed for a town tour thankyou to Dave
for taking us theres been a number of changes in Gunderwonderland ...... we were thrilled to
see..... The biggest change would have to be Kaloma though??
Weve been soooo busy doing our folding of a morning as well as soughting out the coat
hangers setting the tables for meals, and many other chores....
Making wrapping paper from shaving cream and food colouring what fun that was!! while
some residents were making the paper Barb had some helpers who cooked melting moments
which didn't hit the ground.
Its fabulous to have Elaine Mulkey back for Art Therapy which is soooo popular. There has
been amazing pieces of art being produced..... maybe some will be displayed in our new
wings......
Allan is back and Im sure has callus's on his fingers after being here as we keep asking him to
play more.....
Lead Childcare have had visit and stayed for a sausage sandwich, we are so lucky to have
these little people visit as its a huge effort for Loren and her team......
Anyone that would like to come and play cards with us please feel free!

Kaloma's Quality Activity Report
Quality is evidenced in many ways and includes feedback from complaints, residents
meetings, satisfaction surveys. staff meetings, incidents and accidents and improvements
that come from these; and the outcome of the annual schedule of surveys and audits. At
Kaloma we are genuine in our approach to strive toward providing the best services by
competent qualified staff, to residents and home care clients. We have underway an annual
schedule of surveys and audits with the results benchmarked against 35 other services.
A suggestion Box is located at the Sign-In desk at the main reception and Brigalow Wing
entrance near Brigalow car park. Please take the opportunity to record your comments on
one of the suggestion forms and place in the box provided.
Home care clients are able to ask for a Suggestion Form and one will be provided to you.
Kaloma's policy is for staff to log a complaint or comment on the system which then sends an
e-mail to the Chief Executive Officer. We pledge prompt action.

NB: staff - please ensure you are clicking on the 'right' box - if you work in Kaloma then
