ACADEMY OF THEATRE ARTS (SUMMER)
he Kalamazoo Civic Theatre has been a cornerstone cultural center for
Kalamazoo for the past 85 years. We havebeen here through 14 Presidents, 28 Mayors, five wars, a depression (the great one), and at least one recession. Through all of theleadership changes, economic challenges, and conflicts, our community’s need forrespite, leisure, and social outlets haveremained constant. We are proud to be oneof many choices that you have to express creativity, be entertained and connect withyour friends and neighbors.
In a couple of short weeks we will be officially opening the 86th season with whathas been called “the perfect musical” - My Fair Lady. I am delighted that we are producing this musical again; it holds specialmeaning for me, as I am sure it does for manypeople in Kalamazoo who have seen it produced on our stage and elsewhere in yearspast. I am often asked why it is that we chooseto mount a production that we have alreadyproduced. Revivals are comforting; we knowthe story, but they are challenging in that eachtime we experience them, we find new meaningin them. They allow us to retell a specific story, but from our current viewpoint. It is also ourhope that those who have never experienced aparticular show will get the opportunity righthere at the Auditorium. There are so manybeautifully written pieces out there. My FairLady is truly a masterful musical and it is ourpleasure to be able to revive it on our mainstage.
This musical, along with the thirteen otherofferings we have this season, comprise our86th season. It’s going to be a great season offamiliar favorites, re-told classics, and brandnew works. Our theme this season is ‘unplugand reconnect’ and I hope that you will take
the opportunity to do just that with us severaltimes over the next nine months. We have alot of different ways to play at the Civic.Auditions for each of the productions are listedon our website on the calendar, and of coursewe always welcome backstage crew membersas well. If you are looking for a way to havefun and hone your skills, our Academy supportsstudents aged 3 to 103, and scholarships arealways available. For productions, we have agroup rate for students and adults, and newthis season we have received funding to helpstudent groups offset the cost of tickets ortransportation to see our shows. We have agreat subscription package, one of the mostaffordable in town. And I am proud that weare able to keep our single tickets affordableas well.
There is a wealth of opportunity here thisseason, so I hope to see you down at the Civicsoon. – KC
