Syllabus of Paper I (200 marks) Duration: 2 hours

The Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination of UPSC consists of two papers viz., General Studies Paper I & II. The Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) is actually the second paper of General Studies that was introduced i n 2 0 1 1 . The Preliminary Examination of UPSC is for screening purpose only. The marks obtained in the UPSC prelims examination amount to a qualification to take the UPSC Main examination and will not be counted for determining a candidate's final order of merit.

This part of the exam comes only after the results of the mains exams are declared. Candidates can give preference of the language in which they may like to be interviewed. UPSC will make arrangement for the translators. The marks fetched in this stage of the exam is combined with the marks obtained in the UPSC mains.

A candidate is allowed to use any one language from the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution or English as the medium of writing the examination.

Departmental candidates appearing for both Open Quota and Departmental Quota examinations will have to pay Rs.1000/- as examination fee.
