There are 14 districts in Kerala

Situated at the southwestern tip of peninsular India,Kerala comprises a total of 38, 863 sq kms; this isonly 1.27% of India's total land area.

Kerala's population is 318.38 lakhs (31.838 million)- almostthe same as Canada - as per the latest census data,i.e. 3.1%of India's total population. Population density is 819 per sqkms. Sex ratio is 1058 women for 1000 men.

LiteracyKerala's average literacy rate is over 92 per cent, of whichmale literacy rate is 94.2% and female literacy rate is88.17%. Kerala also has the highest readership of newspa-pers and magazines than any other Indian state.

Physical Quality of Life Index (PQLI)Kerala has had a commendable record in terms of thePhysical Quality of Life Index. Indicators of PQLI likeinfant mortality (14%), female literacy (87%), and lifeexpectancy at birth for males (69) and females (72), arewell above all India levels. The major reason forthis achievement is Kerala's focus on the service sector.Scholars compare Kerala’s Quality of Life Index to that ofCanada and European countries, like Norway and Sweden.

About 37% of the total annual expenditure of the state isearmarked for health and education. There is also a largenetwork of health infrastructure with about 1,000 primaryhealth centres and 5,094 sub centres.

There are 44 rivers in Kerala, all but threeoriginating in the Western Ghats.

The following is a list of the westward-flow-ing rivers of Kerala, in order of length, and theirtributaries.

These rivers all originate in the Western Ghatsrange and flow westward into the KeralaBackwaters or into the Arabian Sea. (Length inkilometers is in parentheses).

Three rivers, the Kabini, Bhavani and Pambarrise in Kerala and flow eastwards, Kabini intoKarnataka and the other two into Tamil Nadu.
