Principals Report Quality Work Based on the popular TV series Lego Masters, students in 5/6B, 5/6D & 5/6F recently participated in a Lego Masters in-school event which required the students to design and construct their own Lego project. Each team was required to create a villainslair, complete with a villain, story line and getaway vehicle. The task saw teams work through the 4Cs of education; communication, collaboration, creativity and critical reflection as they brought their designs to life. Mrs Callen and I had the pleasure of visiting each of the 5/6 classrooms as students talked through their projects and we particularly enjoyed testing out the vehicles for the swooshfactor. Well done to all students for their outstanding effort, application and final products. Gifted and Talented Programs Im pleased to announce that our Term 2 gifted and talented programs for 2019 have commenced. Based on a combination of parent nominations; student self-nominations, and teacher nominations, suitably identified students have been placed in art classes. Parents have already been notified if their child was offered a place in any of the Term 2 classes. The K-2 class is taught by Mrs Brooke King on Tuesdays, while the Tuesday Stage 2 class and the Thursday Stage 3 class are being taught by Mrs Laura Lumby. Debating Congratulations to our Year 6 Debating Team who competed against Charlestown East PS yesterday and came away with a convincing win when they debated the topic of media use in schools. Thank you to Mrs Carol Callen who continues to train the team as they get ready for the next round. Jesse H Raffle Tickets A huge congratulations goes to Jesse H from 5/6D for not only representing the Hunter region at the recent PSSA State Soccer Championships but he was also selected on the NSW team. Quality Behaviour The following students have been recognised by a teacher for;

Small Steps Anxiety Awareness Program for Parents/Carers With mental health concerns on the rise in young people some parents and carers question the difference between normal levels of worry and problematic anxiety. Small Steps is offering seminars for parents and carers where they will share the tools to assist adults to spot signs and symptoms and consider potential options going forward. Please refer to the flyer included within the newsletter for more information and how to secure a ticket to attend. Staff Professional Learning Last week, the Kahibah PS staff completed their fourth and final rescheduled Term Four School Development Day session; Learning Progressions and English Scope & Sequences. Staff deepened their understanding of the PLAN 2 platform as a tool to map student progression in Literacy and Numeracy and spent some time reviewing the school scope and sequences for teaching English K-6. Lockdown Drill All schools must develop emergency management plans and ensure they are communicated and regularly practiced, so that staff and students are prepared in the event of an emergency. Today, all staff, students and onsite visitors participated in an Emergency Lockdown Drill. Well done to students for following teachers’ directions and sensibly practicing this important process. Staffing Update A number of teachers across the school are on or are soon to be taking leave. Mrs Nicole Brady is currently on leave and is being replaced by Mrs Tracey Judd, returning Tuesday 11

th June.

Mrs Kendy Nicholas will be taking leave from Monday 24th June ‘til the end of Term 2 and is being replaced by Mrs

Louise Cooper. Mrs Melanie Davis will be taking leave from Monday 24

th June and will be returning Friday 30

th August. Mrs Davis is

being replaced by Mrs Amanda Thompson ‘til the end of Term 2 and then Mrs Rose Kelly for the first 6 weeks of Term 3. School Bus Travel Parents of school students who travel by bus are reminded that all students must use an Opal card or pay for the fare. The bus companies monitor passengers boarding the buses through the Opal card system and if students are boarding without a card it may be thought that there is a reduced need for a bus to even come via the school. If your child does not have a card you will need to apply online. Parents and students who need to apply for a School Opal card can go to the website www.transportnsw.info/school-students School Attendance On occasion, your child may need to be absent from school. Justified reasons for student absences may include: • being sick, or having an infectious disease • having an unavoidable medical appointment • being required to attend a recognised religious holiday • exceptional or urgent family circumstance, (e.g. attending a funeral)

Families are encouraged to travel during school holidays. If travel during school term is necessary, this needs to be discussed with the principal. Absences relating to travel will be marked as leave on the roll, and therefore contribute to your child’s total absences for the year. This figure is recorded on the student’s Semester 1 or Semester 2 school report. Road Safety Please continue to adhere to the speed limits and road signs in the streets surrounding the school, to help keep our students safe. Please remember that the top of Symes Ave is a Kiss and Ride zone. If you need to get out of the car to assist your child/ren you will need to find a park further down the street as congestion quickly builds if drivers get out of their cars in this area. Neighbours from both entrances to the school have also requested that parents keep driveways clear both of cars and people standing in driveways, blocking safe access for the owners. Your anticipated cooperation with these safety matters is appreciated. Kindergarten Enrolments for 2020 It is at this time of year that schools and the Department of Education start to make preliminary organisation for staffing in 2020. Any parents who have children who will turn five before the 31st July next year, and who live in our catchment area should enrol now by contacting the office. I cannot stress enough the importance for all parents to arrange enrolments as early as possible. School principals are required to submit anticipated enrolment numbers next term. Mrs Honi Faasisila Kahibah Public School Principal Sport Report Hunter Regional Cross Country Vanessa T, Kevin T and Tayla B travelled to Cessnock for the Hunter Regional Cross Country last Friday. Just to qualify for the Hunter event is an amazing achievement. Amongst a field of hundreds of competitors Vanessa placed 28th, Kevin 12th and Talya 39th. Congratulations on a tremendous effort! NSWPSSA Soccer Championships Jesse H in spectacular form represented Hunter at the State Carnival out in Bathurst; 3 days of intense soccer competition with 14 teams from NSW. Jesse actually qualified for the State team to represent NSW at the National Championship at Canberra in August. A word from Jesse It was a long, cold trip to Bathurst on Monday 27

th May for the school state soccer championships. I was playing and

representing the Hunter region as well as my school. It was a great first day with all three games won against Riverina 3-0, Sydney West 1-0 and Barrier 9-2. The second day, Hunter were prepared for some tough games and we had a good start to the day winning 2-0 to Sydney East. Next we were up against the hardest team in our pool, Sydney North. We were down 2-0 in the first half but us Hunter boys didn’t drop our heads and we came back fiery with a penalty given to me. The pressure was on. I striked it nicely and it was a goal to Hunter but still 1-2 to Sydney North. We were still in this. 5 minutes to go and we started getting nervous until we scored another goal. The crowd was wild and we were extremely happy with a 2-2 draw. Our next game was an uneventful 0-0 draw. We were into the semi-final after coming second in our pool. The third day, now we were versing the competition favourites in the semi-final Combined Independent Schools (CIS). I scored 2 goals in the first half which made the crowd go wild but just before the half time whistle they scored a free kick, so at half time we were leading 2-1; a great first half. In the second half, they sadly came back 1-3 and CIS made it through to the grand final against Sydney North. Our next game was the 3

rd and 4

th place off against

South Coast and we drew 1-1 so we came equal 3rd

. Sydney took home the trophy/title for 2019 with Hunter finishing third overall. To top off the day, I got into the state team to play at Nationals in August.

Girls PSSA Soccer Knockout On Tuesday 28th May our Girls Soccer Team braved the winter winds to compete at the PSSA Knockout at Speers Point. The girls had a first round convincing win against Charlestown South 8-0. They went on to a more competitive second round match against Hillsborough, winning 3-1. Progressing to the final, the girls showed great determination against the favoured Warners Bay to come away with a 2-1 win. All of the girls displayed fantastic team spirit and persistence throughout the day and are looking forward to competing against Caves Beach in Round 4 of the knockout in Week 8. Mrs Cook Responsible Pet Education Program for K-2 Yesterday K-2 students participated in the ‘Responsible Pet Education Program’ and they found it very interesting. Melissa taught the students how to safely and respectfully interact with dogs. They now understand the correct way to approach a dog and what to do if they are approached by an unknown or angry dog. They also learnt how a dog’s body language can tell us a great deal. Students were chosen to implement the strategies that Melissa had taught them on her dog, Cheers. Book Club Scholastic Book Club issue 4 is out now! When you order through Book Club you are supporting the school library!
