Once again, kumusta kayong lahat!

I have enjoyed attending the Fiesta sa Wellington Annual Filipino Reunion last labour weekend. Filipinofiestas reflect the Filipino culture and bayanihan spirit where we unite to showcase our creativity and ourzest for life even in the middle of difficult times just like what we are experiencing now with the globalrecession.

It was very hectic for me as the PSCI have endorsed Lauren-Marie Ottaway as our representative to theBb Pilipinas-NZ Beauty Pageant. She did very well with her talent. Even though she did not win, it gaveher a great boost to her confidence which her parents, Bob and Marie and myself were very proud of. Iwould like to take this opportunity to thank Betty Mouatt for donating the shoes that Lauren wore; LilyRadnotty for making her talent costume; Delia Bradshaw for teaching Lauren her talent; and also LeanneRidding for Lauren’s evening gown.

Last November 7 at our Halloween Disco we have the privilege of introducing and honoring the PhilippineSports and Culture Club as the winner for this year’s Sportsmanship Award and giving the opportunity forthe Christchurch Filipino community of knowing the winner of 2009 Bb Pilipinas-NZ Beauty Pageant,Lorene-Anne Whitburn who was endorsed by PSCC.

Our yearly Christmas caroling was a success which lasted for two weeks and many thanks to families whoopened their homes to us, and to the committee members and friends who devoted their time to singChristmas carols, once again many thanks.

We are going to have new kababayans who will show their talents at our Christmas Party on December19.

I would like to invite newly arrived kababayans to join the Philippine Society of Canterbury, Inc. Member-ship forms will be available at the entrance of the St Theresa’s Hall at the Christmas Party.

We will have our yearly New Year’s Day Picnic at the Groynes Picnic Grounds. It is open to everyone andthere will be palaro for kids and oldies….see you there.

Once again, Merry Christmas and a pleasant Happy New Year!!!!

Christmas Carolling— Pinoy Style

Carolling, for a long time, has been a part of the Filipino Christmas tradition.

Once the Dawn Mass known as "Misa de Gallo" or "Simbang Gabi " starts, carol-

lers will be on their feet in the streets singing Christmas carols from house to

house, spreading the spirit of the season through songs.

Children like to form groups and enjoy hopping from one house to another every

night. They usually have handmade musical instruments like tambourine, made

from bottle tops, cans or biscuit tins used as drums. They will be happy if you give them a coin or

if your feeling generous a peso or more will make them sing another song for you.

And this is what they sing to thank you for your generosity... "Thank you, thank you, ang babait

ninyo ...thank you...."

It is not only children who go on carolling; church organizations, clubs, group of friends, raise

funds through their yearly carolling. Some of these groups will give you a letter in advance, in-

forming you the date and time they will sing carols to your house with an envelope attached to it

for you to put your donation.

Most of these strolling minstrels are well equipped with their musical instruments like guitar,

drums and tambourine, they have practiced their songs weeks ahead and they are ready to sing

with all their heart in spreading the joy and warmth of the Yuletide season. They do hope that

you will be generous enough to dig deep into your pocket to help them raise funds for their club

or organization .

The PSCI wishes to thank all the generous benefactors who opened their homes (and ears!) to

the carollers!

The parking may have been the only problem that the audience and performers alike have to contend with. But

from the venue to the program proper itself and the fellowship that automatically follows after every Pinoy’s func-

tions, the whole package would be considered a blast! It was indeed a huge success; the crowd was big and every-

one left the theatre contented and feeling happy that in their own special way they know they have contributed to

a good cause!

It all started quite aptly with a wonderful solemn celebration of the Holy Mass by Philippine chaplain, Fr. Ramiel. He

eventually surprised everyone (except of course the program organisers) when he performed a violin recital, to the

big applause by an appreciative audience.

The audio-visuals were really tear-jerkers, and you would have had a heart of stone if you failed to shed a drop of

tear or two while watching those video clips. But, that was the end of it, the sad sojourn into our country’s plight,

as the rest of the program gave everyone fun and entertainment, a totally wonderful visual and aural experience,

with the masterful display of lights and effects blending very well with the fantastic acoustics of the theatre. Who

would have thought that the entire show was orchestrated by a bunch of amateurs, with just a little, modest ex-

perience in the performance arts to their credit?

Some bits of nostalgia was injected from love songs that I would say most of the audience can very much relate to.

The children’s number was very heart-warming, and I’m sure their parents were very proud of their kids. The song

and dance performances attest to the deep talents of our Kababayans, let alone the production skills of those peo-

ple behind every scene. At meron pang comedy sa huli! (And there was also comedy at the end!) It was indeed a

complete show!

My heart-felt thanks go to the CEC community, to all the performers, to the parents of the children for their com-

mendable patience and support, and, most especially, to everyone who attended, without which the ultimate goal

of the entire production would not have been made possible! From the proceeds of the concert, a medical mission

has now been arranged to take place between 9 - 15 January 2010 in the areas of Bataan, Cainta and Cavite.

Once again, a big thank you to all the supporters! May the good Lord bless your generosity with abundant graces

for this Christmas season and in the New Year!
