RoE is an indicator about how efficiently the company uses shareholders’ money and how much it earns with that money. J &K is a state where most of the inves- tors park their money in companies without analyzing the fall out of their investment. For most of them, buying the shares of a company means wealth to them. It’s not only lack of awareness about the market dynam- ics prevalent among the local investors, but lack of professional financial consultants in the State too has led to losses suf- fered by the local investors. Some time back a local investor narrated his own tale of ignorance about the equity market. He had some savings and wanted to turn his fortunes in the stock market. His most difficult task was to pick a perfect stock from the market. Gather- ing some opinion here and there, he ultimately approached to a local ‘financial consultant’ who advised him to invest in a company which has high return on equity (RoE). What’s this rate of return on equity (RoE)? This is the question which he had asked his ‘consultant’, but couldn’t get exact answer. Even as he invested in some companies, but this RoE con- tinues to baffle him. Can you explain it? This is what he asked to me through an email. Let me explain it that in stock selec- tion, an investor should primarily focus on return on equity (RoE) and then look at other things. This is the most meaningful when you consid- er investment in share market. Of course, other things like market share, brand value, corporate gov- ernance, etc. are equally important to judge the strength of the company of which you are buying the shares. But, these are sec- ondary. In simpler terms a company can claim itself good if its return on equity (RoE) is soundly reflected in its earnings. Let me quote Warren, an American business magnate who is noted for his adherence to the value investing philosophy. Buffett believes that the return that a company gets on its equity is one of the most important factors in making successful stock investments. Investopedia defines the RoE as the amount of net income returned as a percentage of sharehold- ers equity. It measures a company’s profitability by revealing how much profit a company generates with the money shareholders have invested. It’s expressed as a percentage. It’s notable that the RoE is useful for comparing the profitability of a com- pany to that of other firms in the same industry. Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia describes that Return on equity (RoE) measures the rate of return on the ownership interest (shareholders’ equity) of the common stock owners. It measures a firm's effi- ciency at generating profits from every unit of share- holders' equity (also known as net assets or assets minus liabilities). RoE shows how well a company uses investment funds to generate earnings growth. Meanwhile there are certain things in the con- text of RoE to remember. By averaging RoE over the past 5 to 10 years can give you a better idea of the historical growth. Besides, investors should expect a higher RoE for high growth companies. Calculating return on equity of a company is not a brain storming proportion and encompasses the three pillars of corporate management - profitabil- ity, asset management, and financial leverage. There are certain things, which need to be taken care of while calculating return on equity. It is calcu- lated by taking a year's worth of earnings and dividing them by the average shareholder equity for that year. It can also be figured as the sum of the past four quarters' worth of earnings, or as the average of the past five or 10 years' earnings, or it can even be an annualized figure based on the previous quarter's results. It’s here where the investor has to remain alert. As pointed out by investment experts, the investors should be careful not to annualize the results of a seasonal business, in which all of the profit is booked in one or two quarters. In succinct, RoE in essential terms is profit after tax (PAT) expressed as a percentage of the total net worth.. Always turn a deaf ear to a company that makes the right noises, but does not earn enough, as they claim. And one more important point – just check that the RoE is sustained by the company in which you are planning to invest by not approaching the mar- kets with repeated offering of shares. If it’s so, then look for other investment avenues. (The views are of the author and not the institution he works for. The Eco- nomic Survey report 2012-13 states that the CDR has decelerated from 35.5 per cent in March 2011 to 34.36 per cent in March 2012, a net fall by 1.21 per cent in one year. The survey attributed this downward trend in CDR to imbalance in the growth structure of deposits and credit. “The banks operat- ing in the state except the regional rural banks have performed better in terms of higher growth in both cred- its as well the CDR,” it reads. As regards priority sector lending, the report notes: “The achievement of banks on March 2012 has fallen short of targets fixed in respect of crop loan, small enterprises, micro-credit and education sectors.” Ironically, the credit deposit ratio has plummeted from around 42 percent in 2008 to the lowest 34 percent in 2012 while the deposits have grown at a steady rate of around 21 percent during this period. The year-on-year growth in deposits as on March 2012 was higher at 20.68 percent in the State as compared to 13.78 percent at all India- level. Regarding branch expan- sions, the survey states that the banks have increased the number of branches in the state. A total numbers of 147 new bank branches, mostly in semi-urban and rural areas, were opened in the State alone during 2011- 2012. “This way the total number of bank branches operating in the State as on March 2012 stood at 1449 out of which 543 branches (37 percent) were private sector com- mercial banks, 358 (25 percent) public sector banks, 304 (21 percent) regional rural banks and 244 (17 percent) co-opera- tive banks.” 54 per cent of the bank branches are located in the rural areas of the State. The population cover- age of banks in the State has improved further in the State. On an average one bank branch is available per 9,000 people in March 2012 as against 10,000 recorded for the previous year. CDR dropped to 35.5 pcin 2011: Economic SurveyMuKEET AKMALI

Srinagar, Mar 16: In a dismaying scenario, the banking sector in Jammu and Kashmir has showed “diminishing trend” in the Credit –Deposit Ratio (CDR), despite accumulat-ing deposits and grow-ing of bank branches in the state. The Eco-nomic Survey report 2012-13 states that the CDR has decelerated from 35.5 per cent in March 2011 to 34.36 per cent in March 2012, a net fall by 1.21 per cent in one year. The survey attributed this downward trend in CDR to imbalance in the growth structure of deposits and credit. “The banks operat-ing in the state except the regional rural banks have performed better in terms of higher growth in both cred-its as well the CDR,” it reads. As regards priority sector lending, the report

notes: “The achievement of banks on March 2012 has fallen short of targets fixed in respect of crop loan, small enterprises, micro-credit and education sectors.” Ironically, the credit deposit ratio has plummeted

from around 42 percent in 2008 to the lowest 34 percent in 2012 while the deposits have grown at a steady rate of around 21 percent during this period. The year-on-year growth in deposits as on March 2012 was higher at 20.68 percent in the State as compared to 13.78 percent at all India-level. Regarding branch expan-sions, the survey states that

the banks have increased the number of branches in the state. A total numbers of 147 new bank branches, mostly in semi-urban and rural areas, were opened in the State alone during 2011- 2012.

“This way the total number of bank branches operating in the State as on March 2012 stood at 1449 out of which 543 branches (37 percent) were private sector com-mercial banks, 358 (25 percent) public sector banks, 304 (21 percent)

regional rural banks and 244 (17 percent) co-opera-tive banks.” 54 per cent of the bank branches are located in the rural areas of the State. The population cover-age of banks in the State has improved further in the State. On an average one bank branch is available per 9,000 people in March 2012 as against 10,000 recorded for the previous year.
