[ DESIGN ]

Architecturally the building has been designed to act as a viewing box from the elevated track, subtly lifting runners and walkers above the surrounding Dakota Park forest providing daylight and views out to the surrounding neighbourhoods of south St. Vital. Glass and translucent panel provide lighting and views out, creating a visual connection to the surrounding outdoor activity spaces.

The addition of the Fieldhouse facility will further establish the Jonathan Toews [Dakota] Community Centre as a premier community sports facility for Winnipeg and the Province of Manitoba for years to come and for people of all ages.

Designed in concept with the Bouyges Graham Community Partners Consortium including Stantec, NBBJ and Buro Happold, the RRI Stadium Project was part of the P3 Bid Proposal for a new home for the Saskatchewan Roughriders Football Club of the Canadian Football League. The 34,000 seat venue (expandable to 42,000) would draw upon the unique characteristics of the prairie context to create a sports venue that is firmly of Saskatchewan and symbolic of the identity of the City of Regina. The stadium would serve as the center for large scale sports, concerts, and cultural events in Saskatchewan creating a unique fan experience within a landmark venue that is truly forward-looking while supporting neighborhood regeneration and enhancing the urban environment of north-central Regina.

The WVU Baseball Stadium project designed in concept as part of a design / build consortium with Gilbane USA, would be the new home to the University of West Virgina Mountaineers Baseball program as part of their move to the Big 12 Conference in the NCAA. Located across the Monongahela River to the west of the existing WVU Sports precinct, the site for the new stadium offers a unique and dynamic setting for baseball in Morgantown. The architectural vision for the stadium and the site planning of the surrounding context have been designed to capitalize on the existing site conditions, landscape and views to the surrounding hills to create a facility that will represent Morgantown and will be unique to NCAA Baseball.

Place branding, graphic design and way-finding might be said to be about conveying or emphasizing information with a visual language that complements (or manipulates) text, signage and environmental design.

Urban [marker] Branding is the winning entry in the 2014 RAIC Festival of Architecture Urban Marker design competition. It is a way-finding system and the transformation of mundane, temporary city signage systems, repurposing them to direct the attention of the casual observer, the passerby, the motorist, and the pedestrian to important and significant events occurring within the city and within the design community.

The City of Kenora retained Stantec in joint venture with Nelson Architecture of Kenora to prepare an integrated design concept and supporting feasibility planning study for an expanded Kenora Recreation and Event Centre that has the capacity to host larger sporting and special events on a year round basis. This assignment considered the existing site conditions and land use in its assessment and analysis. It addresses identifiable programming and service needs in the Kenora region, while working to enhance the Centre as an accessible community asset that is well positioned in the current and future regional marketplace.

The expansion project is centred around the design of a new 2000 seat entertainment arena that would be the home arena for the Kenora Thistles of the the Ontario Hockey Association and would become the main concert and event venue for the city of Kenora, The new arena would be an addition to the existing Mike Richards rink and allows for the addition of a third rink in the future. The masterplan for the Event Centre project includes a reorganization of the site, parking, access routes, new administration space, a multipurpose space / black box theatre, and allows for a hotel complex addition in the future.

Just the second such facility of its kind in Manitoba, the nearly 15,000 m² (160,000 ft²) Winnipeg Soccer Federation Soccer Centre [North] features a clear-span design with four indoor pitches that can be easily converted into two regulation half pitches or one full-size FIFA-approved soccer pitch. Riding the momentum generated by the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup to be hosted in part by the City of Winnipeg, Stantec Sport will deliver a world-class facility on a tight budget and challenging 12 month design to completion timeline.

Included in the WSF Soccer Centre North are 18 full-service player and referee locker rooms, standing and seated viewing areas on all four sides of the facility for up to 2000 spectators, a bar / club lounge area, offices, seminar rooms, pro shop, and a large public atrium and WSF Hall of Fame display area. The facility fills a significant void in the city’s indoor turf recreational sports infrastructure landscape in the north-end of the city, and will meet the needs of Winnipeg’s indoor sports enthusiasts for years to come.

As well as hosting multiple recreational competitions for the rapidly growing Winnipeg Ultimate League and indoor soccer leagues, the facility will host Winnipeg UTFL (Touch Football) matches and other large community gatherings. The WSF Soccer Centre [North] will be completed by summer 2015.

SELKIRK SPORTS PARK[ selkirk, CANADA ]

The Selkirk Sports Park project examines the redevelopment of the existing 3000 seat Selkirk Recreation Complex in the city of Selkirk, a rural community 30km north of Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The Stantec Sports Studio was commissioned to create a masterplan vision for the Selkirk sports precinct which will include a new arena for the Selkirk Steelers of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, a second practice arena, indoor track, aquatic centre, a multipurpose community hall, fitness centre and an indoor soccer complex as well as new and redeveloped outdoor sports fields. An effort has been made to retain as many elements of the existing site as possible particularly the hardscape/parking zones and outdoor fields. The building orientation incorporates the existing sports field grid and also references the northwest angle of the main entry road to allow for several smaller parking zones within the masterplan perimeter.

The new sports fields have been created as a series of sports ‘zones’, grouping as many of the same sport fields of play together as possible, ie: soccer, baseball, softball. The sports park precinct has been planned to allow for a phased development and a continual expansion to the northwest and to the north east of the site.
