Formative Assessment Analogy
““The Basic Idea
Kids learn. They start out by being able to do little, and over time they know and can do more, lots more. Their thinking becomes more and more sophisticated as they respond to instruction and experience in and outside of the school setting.
– (Mosher, 2011, p.2)
Construct Progression
Understandings

concepts within a
particular construct
Skills
• Identifies competencies, ranging from
simple to complex
Performance Descriptors• Paints a picture of
performance, providing examples
Describes the understandings and skills regarding a particular construct, identifying how students’ learning of important concepts and skills in a domain develops over a period of time.
Formative Assessment Means
Multiple means by which a teacher and student elicit evidence of learning
