Juvenile Assessment Center The Juvenile Assessment Center (JAC) provides treatment diversions and community service hours to juveniles who are arrested and escorted on citation by a local law enforcement agency. JAC personnel consists of LPSO deputies who book and process juveniles while providing security support and a trained mental health professional that provides risks and needs assessments for program diversion. Once identified, the JAC works with parents to recommend a course of action to help place the juvenile in an LPSO Youth Services program. A juvenile may also be referred to other community partners for additional services. Drug Testing and GPS Monitoring Drug Testing Lab: We offer affordable drug testing services to parents and other agencies. Located at our Community Corrections Campus, our drug testing lab is open Monday through Friday from 7a.m.-6:30p.m. We can test for a variety of drugs including synthetic marijuana. GPS monitoring provides tracking 24 hours a day and assists juveniles in complying with agreed rules and stipulations set by the justice system. A weekly fee is associated with this service. LPSO Youth Services provides comprehensive programs and services to at-risk youth in our community. Services are available to any student living in Lafayette Parish. Our goal is to deter at-risk kids out of the adult criminal justice system through early intervention and addressing behavioral, family or substance abuse issues. Our staff works with the youth and their families to identify services needed. These services could include crisis intervention, substance abuse counseling, family counseling, parenting skills and/or a referral to another youth service agency in our community. Summer Camp Each summer, the Youth Services Department hosts a free three-week summer camp for all middle school and high school students. The middle school camp is for incoming 6th through 8th grade students, and the high school camp is for incoming 9th through 12th grade students. The camps are designed to help students develop social skills while participating in physical and group activities including group meetings, community service activities, arts & crafts and guest speakers. Substance Abuse Teen Intervene: An evidence-based, brief intervention program for teens struggling with problems related to alcohol or other drug use. Teen Intervene aids youth by identifying their rationale for alcohol or drug use, examining the effects of substance abuse in their lives, and educating them on how to make healthier choices. Youth ages 10-17 are accepted into the program for a period of three to four weeks. Milestones Substance Abuse Program: The program is designed to address the substance abuse issues of adolescents, ages 10-17 years of age. Milestones works by empowering and helping the participants to develop life strategies without drugs and alcohol in order to be productive and responsible. Approx. 8-16 hours Behavioral Counseling Mental Health and Substance Abuse Evaluations: We can provide substance abuse and mental health evaluations. The evaluations are performed by trained clinicians experienced in diagnosing and counseling persons with mental illness and substance use disorders. R.E.A.C.H (Reacting Early And Changing Habits): REACH targets youth less than 18 years of age who are juvenile delinquents and/or at risk of becoming delinquents. REACH features an interactive two hour group discussion with inmates and at-risk youth discussing consequences of making negative choices. C.B.T. (Cognitive Behavior Therapy): A Cognitive Behavioral Treatment approach that focuses on relationships between thoughts, feelings and behaviors. C.B.T is designed for adolescents (ages 10-17) to modify their patterns of thinking to improve coping skills. Approx. 8-16 hours. C.B.T. addresses issues such as anger management.

Referring a ChildPrograms and services offered through the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office Youth Services are open to any youth ages 10-17 in the parish. Participants are referred to programs by the Juvenile Assessment Center, a parent or guardian, teachers or school counselors, as well as outside agencies such as Juvenile Probation and Parole Officers. Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office Youth Services works in partnership with the Lafayette Parish School System, the courts, and other community service providers. The services we provide are free of charge to parish residents and are part of our efforts to provide a proactive solution to the school dropout rate as well as to reduce crime and delinquency among our youth by identifying and addressing contributing issues early on.
