OPEN UP AND FIND A UNIQUE GIFT TO TACKLE POVERTY AND INJUSTICE AROUND THE WORLD
We give gifts for a whole variety of reasons. We give them to show we care. We give them to bring joy to the giver. We give them because we saw it and thought of you.
JUST Gifts exists so that you can show your global neighbours you care, to bring them joy. The gifts in this catalogue have been chosen to give you just a taster of the range of ways The Salvation Army is helping people to tackle their poverty and injustice in some of the poorest parts of the world.
The gifts in this catalogue have been chosen to give you an idea of what your money can do. We’ll always make sure that your money goes to something in the relevant area of our work, but as we always want to be led by the communities in which we’re working, it might not be used for the exact same thing as the gift you chose. However, that does mean that with this gift, unlike other types of presents you might give, it will always be exactly the right gift for the recipient – just what they need – so you don’t even have to keep the receipt!
See the back of the catalogue to find out more about where your money goes, but please don’t ask us where your goat is!

In Tanzania The Salvation Army cares for many girls who are vulnerable to trafficking or live on the streets. We give them protection and hope for the future. With this gift you can help them to receive the medical care they need during their time at our centre.
MEDICAL CARE FOR A VULNERABLE GIRL£5
CODE: 10075EM
SECOND-HAND BIKE £10
CODE: 10080EM
We’re teaching kids at our anti-trafficking centre in Malawi how to fix up second-hand bikes. This gives them skills to break their cycle of poverty and exploitation. The fixed-up bikes are then sold in the local market to help us continue to tackle trafficking in the community.
Dotto is 12 years old and was trafficked away from her village in Tanzania to the capital Dar es Salaam. As her father has died and her mother is terminally ill, a neighbour in the village offered to take Dotto to the city so she could get an education. Instead she was forced to work as a street vendor.
She was found by The Salvation Army on the streets with very little clothing and brought to The Salvation Army’s Mbagala Girls Home. Dotto desperately wanted to go to school.
Thanks to The Salvation Army she is now able to get the education she was promised, as well as food, shelter and the medical support she needs. She also gets involved in all the activities at the centre and supports the younger girls while the team prepare to return her safely to her home and family.

When you only have a small plot of land, you need to make the most of it. We’re sharing some simple techniques so that small farmers can grow their knowledge and grow more crops too.
In recent years agricultural production in Zimbabwe has been going down. This has increased the number of households living in poverty, especially in rural areas. Yet the people of the Nyakudya community are working tirelessly to defeat their hunger. The Salvation Army has been helping by teaching people in this community to improve their farming skills. These farmers are now very proud as they reap the benefits of this knowledge and share it with others in their community.
Honest Gudu lives with his elderly parents, children and grandchildren in his simple home of mud brick and grass-thatched huts. Honest was one of the farmers who has been trained in these new techniques. He said, ‘My yields have doubled since I started using these new techniques, and it is now more than enough to feed my family. I now sell my extra crops to pay school fees for my children.’ Once these farmers have shared their new skills with the rest of their community, 500 more people will have the knowledge they need to increase their yields, helping to end their hunger and poverty for good.

Greeta is a young woman who is desperate for a job. She is a single mother and lives in Nepal in a small, cramped, one-bed house with her son, her two brothers and her mother. Greeta was planning to accept a job offer to work in India as a waitress. The agent had told her he would organise her travel documents and arrange everything. She told her local Salvation Army officers of her plans. They were suspicious of these arrangements, so they called the number Greeta had for the agent. The agent was surprised and angered to hear from them and refused to talk. Due to their knowledge of trafficking they managed to convince Greeta not to go this time, but if it wasn’t for them she could very well have been trafficked. However, she is still anxious for work in order to improve her family’s living conditions. The Salvation Army is setting up a café and beauty parlour in Kathmandu to help Greeta and others like her to gain the skills and experience they need to get a decent job and be protected from the lure of traffickers.

Phelista has five children and has been involved in her local savings group for a few months now. She said, ‘When I joined the group, I was not able to read or write. I did not know the advantages of saving money and my family was suffering. Now I can read and write and run a business.’
With the money that Phelista and the community had saved she took out a loan to help her set up her own small shop. Phelista can now not only read and write, but is also able to provide nutritious food for her family and pay their school fees.
But it’s not just Phelista who benefits. When she pays back the money she has borrowed, someone else can then use it to do the same. This can go on and on until everyone in the community has risen out of material poverty together.
PHELISTA’S STORY
Many women in rural areas have never learnt to read, but this skill can be the first step towards an empowered, poverty-free future. Your gift can give someone the teaching materials they need to learn to read.

Sand dams are a simple, natural way to ensure that communities with seasonal rivers have year-round access to clean, safe water. Help us as we work with communities to construct dams and cement their water supply for the future.
BAG OF CEMENT £7
CODE: 10052WA
Rose lives in the community of Tawa in south-eastern Kenya. She was one of the people we have been working with to construct a sand dam on their river bed to help them conserve water for the dry season. She told us, ‘We worked very hard to complete the sand dam. We had to gather large stones, dig to remove sand, mix cement, and carry very heavy buckets. We were so tired at the end of the day that we did not even feel that we could eat. We just wanted to lie down.’
It was well worth all the effort though. Rose continued, ‘Now we have water and we have experienced the change. We have enough water for our livestock, and it has brought many good things to our families. Our trees and plants have been boosted. We are very happy.’ Now that Rose and the community have access to clean water, their lives have changed for the better.

ABOUT SAID UK
One of the key aspects of our work is that we empower individuals and communities to combat poverty themselves and enhance their own opportunities to bring about change. That means we believe that projects should be identified and owned by the local communities who will benefit from it.
As such, we always use the money either for your chosen gift or for something else in the same specific area of work. The flexibility that this provides is invaluable in ensuring that the communities that we work with retain ownership of the project and get exactly what they need.
