Overview About just festival Westminster

Just Festival Westminster is a curated festival for Westminster, which will provide meeting places for discussions on humanitarian and social justice issues together with a wide range of cultural events and entertainment at St Matthew’s Westminster and St Mary le Strand. It will be held between 10 – 21 June 2015.

Just Festival

Just Festival Westminster is created in partnership with Just festival, a curated programme of around 300 events, across 20 venues taking place each year in August. We aim to celebrate diversity of cultures, faiths, gender-identities, sexualities, philosophies and ideas, challenge inequality and injustice and create a space for communities to engage with each other in productive dialogue.

In our fifteenth year, Just Festival features top-quality speakers, conversations, performances, film, food, exhibitions, family activities, workshops, art and much more. It has an established reputation as a fringe venue that delivers high quality events from all genres.

Vision

just Festival Westminster seeks to develop an understanding of community in the heart of the city through shared events, hospitality and dialogue. It aims to provide achievable and realistic ways for the local community to engage with each other in meaningful ways, inclusive of backgrounds, beliefs, and identities. We provide a central place of meeting to discuss important issues concerning the human experience with an emphasis on social justice. Simultaneously welcoming and going out to members of the surrounding communities, just Festival Westminster will engage significantly with the working and resident populations. It aims to develop strong links with the surrounding business, legal and academic communities to open up the venues to them as places of wisdom and contemplation, inclusive of beliefs and backgrounds. Whether through thoughtful conversation or joyful entertainment our aim is to provide a platform for everyone to flourish, bringing their talents and beliefs to the Festival, its venues and surrounding communities.

What Makes Just Festival Westminster Unique?

As a not-for-profit organisation our priority is to encourage dialogue, community and personal growth. We want everyone who comes into contact with Just Festival Westminster, not only enjoy an hour’s entertainment but also, take something with them to share throughout the year. Together we build a united multi-national, multi-identity, multi-belief community using the festival as a catalyst for conversation and cultural exchange.

What Are We Looking For?

We are looking for performances, films, talks, workshops, family events and exhibitions which celebrate culture, explore social justice or challenge narratives.

Performance We are looking for performances that showcase cultures from around the world, explore injustice, or pose ethical questions. We include all genres – music, theatre, dance, children's shows, poetry, and storytelling.

Just Festival 2014 brought together a phenomenal programme of performances showcasing talent and knowledge on a local, national and global scale; from exploring the Sounds of Freedom with Edinburgh Brass Band, coming of age in rural Ireland in My Name is Saoirse discovering the new voices of Soweto with Soweto Melodic Voices and Simply Soweto Encha, to the enchanting Tibetan Dance and Music by Tashi Lhunpo Monks. These events celebrated the richness of global culture, confronted unacceptable behaviour and challenged audiences to reflect on their views, beliefs and actions.

Films, Talks, Workshops and Exhibitions

We partner with a host of local charities and organisations to create an astounding array of activities for people to broaden their knowledge and skills. We want to bring communities together to make new connections, showcase their expertise and discover new talents.

Just Festival partnered with Simply Soweto Encha to produce Songs From Soweto, a fascinating documentary charting the remarkable journey of five a cappella singers from one of South Africa’s most notorious townships. Mercy Corps gave a talk about the efforts being made in Lebanon to ensure peace between Syrian refugees and their neighbouring communities. The Art Shed created an interactive experience for passers-by with everything from a pop-up miniature village to the Idea shop.

St Matthew’s Westminster

Located on Great Peter Street, St Matthew’s Westminster is in the heart of London, close to the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey and Church House. The Church was built in 1849 to the design of Sir George Gilbert Scott, greatly enriched by the addition of fittings and glass by C F Bodley, C E Kemp, Martin Travers and others. The Lady Chapel is one of Sir Ninian Comper’s finest early works.

The Church seats 70 people and is best suited to traditional and classical music, although we can accommodate every kind of music. Performers always relish performing in the Church due to its beautiful natural acoustics. The acoustics also make the Church suitable for drama, dance, and spoken word events.

It is wonderfully adaptable to suit daytime workshops to nighttime, intimate concerts. The seating can be set up cabaret style, tradition theatre style or even completely removed and stored to the side. There is a kitchen attached which can be used for refreshments if desired. St Matthew’s has a wheelchair accessible WC and hearing loop.

St Mary le Stand

St Mary le Strand is a Church of England church at the eastern end of the Strand in the City of Westminster, London. The church stands on what is now a traffic island to the north of Somerset House, King's College London's Strand campus building and The Temple, and south of Bush House. It is the official church of the Women's Royal Naval Service, and has a book of remembrance for members who have died in service.  The Church seats 150 people and is suited to any kind of performance and talks. It would suit a range of events from daytime conversations to evening concerts. St Mary le Strand has a wheelchair accessible WC and hearing loop.

Scheduling

We traditionally cater for events slots of 60 minutes starting at set times: 7pm on weekdays and 11am, 2pm, 4pm, 6pm and 8pm on weekends. If your show runs longer than 60 minutes then we can negotiate time slots. 30 minutes set up and take down are included between the slots. Our sites have very limited to no storage space, so any set or props must be minimal.

Ticket Split

As a non-profit organisation we are not charging contributors venue hiring fees or deposits but offering a 60%/40% ticket split. So the contributor receives 60% of the ticket sales and Just Festival Westminster retains 40%. Therefore both Just Festival Westminster and the contributor benefit from our shared success.
