EXHIBITION DATES | SEP 9 – OCT 14EXTENDED MOMENTUM FESTIVAL HOURS | Sunday September 17 | 10am-5pmGALLERY HOURS | Tuesday – Saturday 11am – 6pmART LOOP | September 21 from 5:30pm - 9pmADDRESS | 425 Jefferson Ave, Toledo, OH 43604
Welcome and thank you for joining us for the Momentum Festival and Juried Glass Competition and Exhibition!
In 1962, the Studio Glass movement began in a moment where artists across mediums, and glass industry experts came together to collaborate toward experimentation and innovation, and to develop technology to give individuals access glass as an artistic material.
The 2017 Momentum Juried Glass Exhibition serves as a celebration of this exchange between arts and industry, and a moment in time to evaluate how our artistic relationship with the material of glass has evolved. Our judges have selected work expressing a full spectrum of approaches and perspectives toward the material of glass, revealing those same values of experimentation and innovation that began the movement, serving as inspiration for contemporary art practices in glass today more than ever.
As exhibition chair, I have been humbled and amazed by the amount of talent, support, hard work, enthusiasm and generosity that has been offered toward the creation of this exhibition, and without which a show of this caliber or proportion could have been possible.
The organizations and businesses that financially supported the construction of the exhibition and contributed to the prize money awarded to winning work: ProMedica and Toledo’s philanthropic community. Your support has aided in bringing works to Toledo from across the country, and providing awards to artists that will encourage further experimentation and innovation in the field of glass. Thank you.
I would like to thank the incredibly talented pool of artists who responded to our call. Thank you for sharing your work with us. Your sensitivity to the material of glass, technical and conceptual acuity, and varied approach to the act of making have created the poignant and comprehensive exhibition we are able to present today. I would also like to thank the many talented artists that were not included in the exhibition, the caliber of work across the board was very strong and response to the call was exceptionally high; we hope you will reapply to Momentum exhibitions in the future.
Thank you to the talented panel of judges – Jennifer Navva Millikin, Raul Paredes, and Michael Killoren for your expertise in selecting works from more than 600 submissions, and for electing our award winners.
I would like to extend a huge thank you to Contemporary Art Toledo’s Paula Baldoni and Brian Carpenter for curation and exhibition design of the gallery space. Your thoughtful consideration of the artwork within the unique space of the Secor Building has formed a narrative for the viewer to experience that is not only visually dynamic, but conceptually thought provoking.
I would like to thank all the volunteers during installation and the opening, your generosity is greatly valued and a huge contribution to the success of the exhibition.
I would last like to extend thanks to the organization that made this weekend possible, The Arts Commission. The invitation to celebrate the arts and glass on this scale is a rare treasure. I very much appreciate your hard work on all levels, and your commitment to value and support artists and the arts in Toledo. Your efforts are truly transformative.

Momentum Committee
Margaret Upton Trumbull, or “Margy,” has had extensive non-profit board exposure with many community, regional and international organizations in the arts, education and human services. Upon graduating from Lawrence University in 1972 with a major in Art, she was employed at the Toledo Museum of Art. She has also worked as a Studio Jeweler. In 2013 she helped establish Good Grief of Northwest Ohio, Inc., which provides support for children, teens and their families who have experienced the death of someone significant in their lives.
She married her husband Scott Trumbull in 1973 and lives in Ottawa Hills, Ohio, Runaway Bay, Jamaica, and St. Joseph, Michigan. She is the proud mother of three grown sons, all married, working and each having one of their three grandchildren. Margy loves to bird, travel, snorkel, read, go to art galleries and museums, collect studio art glass and walk in the woods with her husband and dog “Duke,” a rescued Border Collie. She and her husband recently traveled to Cuba on an Art and Architectural tour with the Toledo Museum of Art. They are looking forward to spending time this summer at their home in Michigan.
Scott Trumbull was born in Toledo but grew up in Kansas City. He graduated from Denison University and the Harvard Business School. He joined Owens Illinois in 1972 and eventually became Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of the Company. In 2002 he became Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Franklin Electric, a leading electrical equipment manufacturer. Mr. Trumbull is a member of the Board of Directors of Welltower, Schneider National, Columbus McKinnon, ProMedica, and the Toledo Museum of Art.

Jennifer Navva Milliken INDEPENDENT CURATORJennifer-Navva Milliken is a curator and writer whose work is inspired by the objects with which we live and the hands, tools, and ideas that shape them. Both an independent curator and an embedded staff member in international art museums and cultural outreach organizations, with a solid academic background in fine arts and design, she brings a fresh yet comprehensive approach to a broad diversity of arts initiatives. Her exhibitions have been presented in museums, art fairs, galleries, and unconventional spaces, and her writings have appeared in exhibition catalogues, anthologies, and publications that investigate and critique the intersecting fields of art, craft, and design. With a uniquely global perspective, honed through a life split between two continents, she is driven by the extraordinary power of the arts to challenge preconceptions and bridge divides.

Aman Mojadidi and Once Upon a Place in ToledoSeptember 15 – October 22Contemporary Art Toledo is bringing Aman Mojadidi and his newest work, Once Upon a Place, to Toledo in September 2017. Currently installed in New York’s Times Square through September 5th, it will soon be travelling to Miami — for Art Basel, the premier art show of the Americas — but not until after spending exclusive time in Toledo, Ohio. The opening of Once Upon a Place and the artist’s visit coincides with Toledo’s downtown arts festival, Momentum as well as Welcoming Week, a national celebration of immigration.
Once Upon a Place is an interactive installation that uses decommissioned phone booths to relate immigrants’ stories to the public. Visitors enter a booth, pick up the receiver, and listen to one or more of 70 personal stories of immigration. A phone book inside each booth details these personal histories and lets guests write their own. The individuals behind these oral histories come from countries around the globe: China, Mexico, Burkina Faso, Tibet, and dozens more. Recorded over a period of several months, the artist’s intention was to create a safe environment for immigrants to share their personal experiences and for the public to hear them. Once Upon a Place was created in residence with and commissioned by Times Square Art with the support of the Shelly Donald Rubin and Stavros Niarchos Foundations.
The Artist’s LectureAman Mojadidi will give a free talk entitled “Borderless: Art and Migration in Troubled Times” at 2 pm on September 17 th at the McMaster Center in the Main Library of Toledo Lucas County Public Library (TLCPL). The talk will include a question and answer session followed by a brief public reception.
Sponsored by the Roger Ray Institute for the Humanities (RRIH), this is the first of a series of free and public talks scheduled for 2017-2018. Find them on Facebook for more information about RRIH events.
