JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS | FRIDAY 3 NOVEMBER 2017
NEWS & NOTIFICATIONS
From the Master of the Junior SchoolBut you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s specialpossession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darknessinto his wonderful light. 1 Peter 2:9
Dear Parents and Friends of the Junior School,
Our students have been involved in a number of charitable and fun activities this week. On Tuesday, Year 5students operated a series of ‘businesses’ for their parents and the boys of the Junior School. It was a fascinatingand practical experience of the ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’ of running a successful enterprise to conclude their recent Unitof Inquiry. Collectively the grade raised $2495 to be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Thank you to theparents who attended, participated and helped to resource the boys’ stalls and well done Year 5! Yesterday, ourCharity Leaders and Cody Lambert spent the afternoon at IGA filling trolleys with food items to kick-start ourAnglicare Toys and Tucker Drive and boost the number of cans given to The Exodus Foundation. The boys usedsome of the funds raised through the Walk-a-thon. We are asking every family to make a contribution of toys orbooks (to be placed unwrapped under the Office Christmas tree) and/or canned items (placed in the corridoropposite the Chess board) to be passed onto Anglicare for distribution to families over Christmas. Specificsuggestions of appropriate items are communicated elsewhere in this newsletter. The boys also enjoyed a MuftiDay on Thursday as part of Pastoral Care Week with funds raised for the privilege of dressing casually to beallocated to a charity selected by our Year 6 leaders. It is a privilege and joy to see boys and families embracingopportunities to be generous to others.

As part of Pastoral Care Week, on Wednesday all boys in Years 2, 4 and 6 completed the Primary WellbeingSurvey. The Australian Council of Education Research has designed this 53 statement anonymous surveyfocusing on indicators of social-emotional wellbeing, emotional skills (i.e. resilience & coping skills), social skillsand learning skills. This survey has been undertaken for the last few years and the School uses the information totrack the wellbeing of cohorts in general throughout their time at the School. The information obtained helps toguide welfare and life skills programmes.
The Auxiliary Annual General Meeting was held yesterday. The Junior School has again enjoyed amazingsupport from Jinan Ammoura and her team this year. Next year’s executive was elected and I look forward toworking closely with the team who have accepted the responsibility of coordinating events in 2018. They alreadyhave great things planned including the second edition of Movie Under the Stars to welcome families on Friday23rd February. It is wonderful to have so many parents willing to work with and serve the School with such timeand energy. I thank the Auxiliary for the role played in organising events and providing resources for the boys of

the Junior School.
Next week will see the first orientation visit of next year’s Kindergarten students to the Junior School. We arelooking forward to meeting them, seeing them meet each other and providing some helpful guidance to newparents as their sons get ready for big school. Kindergarten visits will continue over the next few weeks, culminating in Orientation Day for all new boys on Friday 24th November. Current students will continue withregular programmes and lessons on the day.
Year 5 students are reminded to submit their leadership application forms and letters by next Wednesday. The process of selecting leaders and allocating roles will then continue until the announcement of 2018 captainsand house leaders at Speech Day.
Next Wednesday, our Year 6 students will join with Year 6 girls and boys from nearby schools for an evening ofdance and socialising at the Year 6 Social at MLC. It should be great fun! Boys will be reminded of dress andbehaviour expectations early next week. Teachers are working hard to ensure that the boys remain mindful oftheir position as leaders in our School and the corresponding expectations over their final weeks. They havebeen encouraged to finish the year well and reminded that the privileges they will enjoy at special events incoming weeks are closely linked to the responsibility, respect and self-discipline that we expect them to displayin their final days in the Junior School.

Academic Focus | Primary Wellbeing SurveyOn Wednesday 1st November, as part of Pastoral Care Week, all Year 2, 4 and 6 boys completed the PrimaryWellbeing Survey with their classroom teacher. For many years, the School has conducted surveys acrossdifferent year levels in the Middle and Senior Schools. The results of these surveys have helped us to betterunderstand the social and emotional needs of our boys, establishing an evidence-based process for planning andevaluating our approaches to pastoral care, and teaching and learning. This is our fifth year conducting thePrimary Wellbeing Survey. It has been developed by the Australian Council of Education Research. It is ananonymous survey which focuses on indicators of social-emotional wellbeing, emotional skills (ie. resilience &coping skills), social skills and learning skills. Our pastoral care focus, which promotes a shift away fromemotional first aid to one which takes a holistic approach to learning and well-being, is well aided by the ongoinginformation we receive and respond to from these surveys.

SPORT
Sportsmaster | Junior SchoolA lovely Spring Saturday morning greeted us after the wild and woolly Friday we endured 24 hours earlier. Thefields and indoor and outdoor basketball facilities at Summer Hill shone spectacularly.
It was nice to be able to move around and see segments of 10 different basketball matches, mostly from thebench and also the 4A cricket match, which was held at school.
We had mixed results with Sydney Grammar in Basketball, met strong opposition in Scots in our Year 6 1sts and2nds and our Milo T20 team under Mrs Taylor had a strong win over the Prep team in an intra school derby.
Our 4C basketball team battled manfully with just the bare 5 and led Kings 6-4 at the break before succumbingto exhaustion in the second half.
Congratulations to Reece Hartnett (5D) who placed 4th in the Intermediate ACT Optimist Championship forsailing last weekend. Reece placed twice in four races to total 21 points, only one point behind the eventualwinner. Each position in a race calculates your score, the lower the better and 20 was the winner’s total.
