WELCOME BACK TO SEMESTER 2

We have all enjoyed a settled start to Semester 2 and the opportunity to return to some normality. With careful planning and by following required protocols, we are grateful that a number of pre-COVID-19 school activities are able to go ahead this term. We had perfect weather for our Inter-House Athletics Carnival last week, and we are looking forward to the After School Dance sessions with Mrs Heuir, and Little Souls with Mrs Limkin resuming this week.

INTER-HOUSE ATHLETICS

Giving our best is central to everything we do at All Souls St Gabriels and this couldn’t ring more true than at the 2020 Inter-House Athletics Carnival. Supported by parents, family and friends, the students displayed brilliant athletic endeavour and good sportsmanship. We congratulate all students on their personal achievements and the wonderful team spirit and support they displayed throughout the day.

Our sincere thanks to Miss Browne for the planning, coaching and preparation that made for a successful carnival. Thanks to the Junior School staff for their energy, enthusiasm and continued support of the students’ efforts and the Senior School Students who assisted staff and encouraged the Junior School students throughout the day.

Our Pre-prep children showed great determination in their 60m track event and thanks to Mrs Limkin and Mrs Cragg, had a great time completing various games and mini-challenges in a rotation of developmentally appropriate ‘field events’. Great fun was had by all - the children and staff.

Thank you Tom Hogg, Casten Lemson, Jarrad Sweeney and Noel Akers (School’s Grounds and Maintenance staff) who always do an exceptional job in making sure the campus is well prepared for the day’s events.

We also appreciated Mrs Katie Hastie (Athletics Patron and Past Student) joining us for the carnival, and assisting with the presentations at the end of a very successful day.

STAYING SAFE

Our School has a proud history spanning 100

years and much has transpired over that time;

two world wars, droughts, floods, many

changes in curriculum, technology and teaching

methods. A historical connection may also be

made to the serious impact of measles,

whooping cough, diphtheria and polio epidemics

to COVID-19. The increased cases of COVID-19

in southern states reminds us that, even though

we are fortunate to have the easing of some

restrictions here in Queensland, we cannot

afford to be complacent. Your collective

support, understanding and co-operation is

critical in helping us protect the health and

wellbeing of all, whilst maintaining a level of

continuity for our students.

I am grateful to live in a community that works

together and shows adaptability, resilience and

care, to ensure the safety of all throughout

these challenging times. We are blessed to work

with your children and look forward to all the

new learning and opportunities we will enjoy

during a healthy Semester 2.

News from Pre-prep: Mrs Peagham,

Mrs Limkin, Mrs Cragg

A great, big thank you for your co-operation and

understanding with all the restrictions that have taken

place in Pre-prep. You efforts are appreciated.

Term 3 is in full swing, we have moved onto learning

phonics (the sounds our letters make) in Literacy. We

are incorporating visual cues to help students with

their sounds. We have learnt the sounds that the

letter I,i - L,l and O,o make. Remember to ask your

child to show you what they know. We are authors,

we are using the letters we are learning in phonics to

create small books about our friends who have these

letters in their names. Resources that are personally

relevant are powerful tools for learning. We are also

doing comprehension activities using images of

familiar environments to answer questions, expand

our vocabulary and make connections to our own

lives. We have to be especially careful to listen to the

questions that are being asked.

In Numeracy, we have been exploring simple patterns.

Patterning is an important skill for the students’ future

understanding of skip counting, odd and even

numbering and ordering. We began our patterns using

colours that are repeated over and over again, then

we progressed to using objects to create a pattern.

This can be quite a tricky skill but we are sure to

identify, extend and create these two different types

of patterns with lots of repetition and practice.

In Science, we are learning about the seasons and

weather in the Earth and Space Sciences. We will

explore how the weather changes our behaviour and

the behaviour of plants and animals. This will marry in

beautifully with Geography as we explore the

importance of caring for our natural environment. The

Early Years Learning Framework (ELYF) note that

“Children are connected with, and contribute to their

world by showing increasing respect for

environments.” We are planting some new fruit and

vegetables in our garden beds. We are reducing,

recycling and reusing the rubbish in Pre-prep so we

are lowering our impact on the environment. We are

reusing yoghurt containers in our art centre, we are

composting our fruit scraps into our garden soil and

we are recycling our drink bottles and popper cartons.

In Health, we are challenging ideas about what it

means to be a boy or a girl due to stereotyping. Some

people think that only boys can wear blue. Mrs Limkin

loves to wear her warm blue jumper in winter to keep

her warm. Some people think that only girls can play

with dolls. We love pretending to be Dads in Pre-prep.

We are thinking deeply about the toys we love to play

with, the games we like to play. We don’t want our

interests and choices restricted just because of our

gender.

We are loving our trips to the library to choose our

own books for the Pre-prep reading corner. Miss

Browne is teaching us some new skills using balls and

tennis rackets and Mrs Sellers is taking us on a

musical adventure around the world to learn songs

and dance from a variety of different cultures.

News From Prep:

Mrs Marshall and Mrs Fittock

Mrs Marshall’s Monkeys are back in the swing of

things with reading and writing a big focus for

this term. We are grateful for Mrs Dunn and Miss

Browne coming in to help with reading groups.

The children have more individualised help with

their reading and are able to practise reading in

groups and in pairs.

During our Daily 5 time, the children have been

writing sentence beginnings then creating their

own endings. They have come up with some

interesting and amusing sentences. This term the

children learn all about rhyme. They have to find

rhyming words as well as make their own

rhyming sentences. We have looked at Nursery

Rhymes to help us identify rhyming sentences

then we make up our own words that could go

into the same Nursery Rhyme. It is lots of fun

making up funny words in our rhymes.

The children have been encouraged to look at

weather reports this term. We are talking about

weather symbols and how weather changes daily,

weekly and with each season. They have come

up with some interesting questions they would

like to know about weather in Charters Towers.

“Why doesn’t it snow in town?” “Why are the

days colder and shorter in Winter?” These are

some of the questions we will investigate before

the end of the term.

During our History unit we are looking at

artefacts, photographs, books and pictures from

the past. We are looking at how these things can

give us an idea of how things were years ago.

The children loved looking at the old photos and

asking questions to clarify their understanding.

Show and Tell has been entertaining this term.

The children were asked to bring in something

they have made. We have some pretty cool

things such as a fish trap, a basket made of

reeds, an army base and a Lego ship. Thanks to

the parents who have helped with their little

projects.

The children have put in a huge effort over the

last few weeks. I look forward to guiding them

through the next stage of their learning.

News from Year 1:

Mrs Reardon’s News from the Reef

Year 1 have launched into Term 3 at a lightning pace.

We have been busy studying measurement, in

particular, measuring length and capacity. It has been

good to be active and using our hands to learn these

concepts. We have learnt some important rules for

measuring. When finding the length of something you

must start at the beginning of the object and not in

the middle. You must take care that you are not

overlapping or leaving gaps and most importantly we

always double check our counting. The rules for

measuring capacity are a little different. We need to

make sure that our measuring tool is not overflowing

or too low. The best way to make sure we are

accurate is to have our measuring tool heaped and

use our hand to wipe off the top. We have been

measuring with informal units like our hand span, feet,

paperclips, cups and scoops.

In English, we have been learning how to retell a

story. We have been reading a story we already know

to help us, “Jack and the Beanstalk”. When retelling a

story we talk about the characters, setting, problem,

solution, what happened in the beginning, middle and

end. We can use words like next, then and finally. This

week we are using our new skills and retelling

Dreamtime stories.

This semester, we are studying Geography. So far we

have looked at the weather and seasons. We are so

lucky that our Science unit this term is about Day and

Night, as we need to know all about how the weather

and seasons affect the day and in the night.

Our Arts subject is Media Arts. We have been

venturing up to Senior School on Thursdays to use the

computer labs. We are learning all the special skills

that we will need to make a future portrait.

We have been busy these last few weeks getting back

into routine. We start our mornings with some fine

motor activities and some Brain Gym to get us focused

and ready to learn once the bell has gone. There are

new groupings for Daily 5 and spelling too. We love all

our specialist subjects and look forward to them every

week.

News from Year 2: Chief Heuirwatha’s Tribe

Forces, Forces Everywhere!

Did you know that forces are everywhere and that most of our daily activities involve forces at work? This term in Science, our happy scientists have been busy learning the effect of push and pull forces on objects around them. They have learnt that these forces not only set objects in motion, but they can also change their shape, direction and stop them moving altogether! Through some future enthralling investigations, the children will test the effect of forces on the ground, in the air and in water. They will create investigation questions, formulate a hypothesis and reflect on the outcomes of investigations. Our last experiment saw us creating our own spinning toy and investigating the forces at work to make it move. They have learnt so much about forces so far that I thought I would share this with you……..

Pushes and Pulls

What did we learn about how toys move?

Pushes and pulls are all used everyday.

Pushes and pulls make objects move and set them in motion.

We can see forces at work all around us.

The cause of a push and pull can be invisible- like the wind and magnetism.

A strong force makes an object move faster or further.

A gentle force will make an object go slower or travel less distance.

Push and pulls can change the shape of an object like playdough.

Forces can make objects move in different ways- fly, spin, twist, turn, roll, and bounce.

Forces can make objects change direction or even stop moving.

Mathematic Mania

Students have enjoyed investigating fractions of shapes. They have learnt about equal parts and classified shapes as equal and unequal. Our keen mathematicians have been introduced to halves, quarters, eighths and even thirds. This week they have immersed themselves in a range of mathematical games to consolidate their understanding and have even learnt how to represent fractions using a numerator and denominator. Many have been surprised to find out that they have been making fractions every day without even realising it. Next we will move onto finding fractions of collections which will really get those brains working.

HASS Hysteria

Talk about stepping back in time! Thank you to the parents and students who have brought along items from the past, we have a wonderful display of old technologies in our classroom to support our Hass unit. The students have loved playing with the different items in the morning and have been amazed at just how much things have changed over time. It was not until we had the chance to see, touch and interact with these items did we realise just how far technology has advanced over time. Last week we begun looking into the history of the telephone. The children were able to sequence inventions along a simple timeline by comparing the dates that they were invented.

Amazing Art

On display in our classroom is an array of original portraits created by our talented Year 2 artists. The students have examined both realistic and abstract portraits and have started creating their own. They have learnt some tricks to help them draw life-like facial features. Their first self-portraits were a great success with many surprising themselves with their own artistic talents. Famous artists like Vincent van Gough and Pablo Picasso will be used to stimulate the students creativity. I can’t wait to see what inspiration these artists will bring to the students’ works. Stay tuned for more in the future!

News from the Year 3 Dream Team

Miss Miliauskus

Term 3 is jam packed full of interesting new learning for the Year 3 Dream Team.

In English, we have begun to explore how the author’s language influences our feelings about characters. We are loving our novel Matty Forever and the tension that the author is using to develop the friendship between the two main characters Bill and Matty. Bill currently has a big secret that we desperately want to know! We are going to create our own narratives based on friendship and will use some of the tricks that the author has used in our own writing.

Science this term is out of this world. We are currently investigating the Earth’s place in space and the influence this has on our daily lives. So far, we have used some of our classmates who pretended to be our Sun, Earth and Moon. We discovered that it takes us around 365 days to do a full orbit around the sun. We did become a little dizzy when we also had the Earth spinning and rotating around the sun showing us how we have night and day. We will continue exploring and gathering information to make our very own game that will be full of interesting information about the Solar System.

In Geography, we are furthering our knowledge on the lives of other people in different neighbouring countries, as well as learning all about special places that we protect and why different people choose these places to look after in the first place. We will conduct an inquiry about special places within the local community to discover how people use these places and why we should protect them. Using this information, we will create our own brochures using Publisher.

In Mathematics, we are enthusiastically diving into measurement including capacity (L, ml), mass (g, kg) and length (mm, cm, m, km). Our favourite activity so far has been our paper plane flying contest. We designed three different paper planes, that of course, we had to test to see which one would fly the furthest. There were different tools we could choose from to measure how far our planes flew, but we discovered that the best tools were measuring tapes and trundle wheels, as some of our planes flew up to 17 metres! Throughout the term, we will continue to build our knowledge in mental mathematic strategies, number facts, angles and problem-solving strategies.

We adored Drama last term as you can see by our freeze frame photos. We are also loving Visual Arts which has been all about learning the different elements of art particularly line, value and colour. We are creating our own collaborative class art piece using these three elements before we begin to explore art from different cultures. We will use these art pieces as inspiration for our pieces later in the term.

During Technology, we brushed up on our coding skills. We learnt that computers run off codes that tell it what to do and if those do not tell them exactly what to do then things can go terribly wrong. We played games that required the correct sequence of codes for the player to move.

Our class focus for this term has been on mindfulness, we have been practising mindful meditation using Smiling Minds. There has also been a lot of discussion about how our thoughts can be like butterflies, where we can catch the thoughts we like and let go of the ones that might not be so helpful. We also became mindful monarchs and listed our favourite strategies that help raise our spirits when we do not feel happy within ourselves.

News from Year 4: Mrs Turner’s Trekkers

Welcome back to Term 3. It has been a wonderful start to the term and already we have filled in every moment with fascinating learning, fun experiences and improvement of skills. We continue with our Reading Around the World challenge and reading awards are still being received as students reach each milestone and move from continent to continent and back to Australia.

One of my favourite things about Year 4 English is sharing the novel, ‘The One and Only Ivan’ with the class. The emotional journey, the rich vocabulary and the connections made with the characters, makes it one of the most enjoyable reads to share with students. Reading the book and stopping to predict and discuss has also improved the reading experience for the students. I encourage you to do the same when you can during home reading. Seeing the excitement and hearing the begging to read more each day is very fulfilling. This year we have the added bonus of the release of the movie version of this wonderful story and the sequel, ‘The One and only Bob’. The students are looking forward to me reading this to them for pure enjoyment at the end of the unit.

There have been a lot of group investigations and activities in many subject areas in the first few weeks. Students have explored symmetry in shapes, researched special natural features within Australia, made and played with slime that had some very interesting properties and completed a cut and paste task with all oceans and continents around the world.

In Mathematics, we are working in the area of data collection and graphing and have been learning new skills in Digital Technology to match this unit. Students are excited about the new skills they are learning in the Excel program and there is more to come. Some students are starting to work more independently in these lessons as they become familiar with the program.

In Geography, we are learning about different continents around the world, biomes, locations and natural features and animals particular to different areas. The children will be improving their skills when using an atlas, describing locations and using co-ordinates. To match our learning in Geography, we have started designing a paper craft that links to a native South American artwork. In this artwork we are also using animals from that region.

This term, I have brought in jigsaw puzzles related to our learning for student enjoyment. They enjoy working on these and eagerly ask when the next one is coming for them to start. The hardest one is yet to come and it will slow them down a bit but still be thoroughly enjoyable I’m sure.

I’m looking forward to a great term of learning, investigating and creating with the class.

News from Mrs Dickson & Year 5

“If you live long enough, you see the same eyes in different people.” Maz Kanata Force Awakens

Wow what a crazy year we have had. Thankfully Term 3 is looking to be more normal. We have hit the ground running and the students are engaged fully in the activities I have planned.

In English, we are showing our creative side through poetry and so far we have written a Kennings, Limerick, Haiku, Cinquain and the old familiar Acrostic. Students will present one of their poems later in the term. This week we began to delve into analysing poetry, and in preparation I have been reading a variety of picture books written in poetic form. Many of the stories are either on natural disasters that link with our Humanities and Social Science unit or continue to build on our resilience and mindset work we started last term.

In Mathematics, students have been reviewing their knowledge of symmetry and looking at how we can use enlargement symmetry to make 2D images bigger. We have had lots of fun using grids to enlarge images of lions and ants. This week students have been learning to convert different units of measurement like millimetres to centimetres or kilograms to grams.

In Science, we are investigating light and we have had many long discussions that required further research on the Internet to learn more. There have been a number of times when we have digressed too far and it has been like reeling in a big fish to get us back on track.

Our first excursion will be taking place next week as part of our Design Technology Paddock to Plate unit. We will visit Laffin Honey and at the end of the term, I hope to take the students to other local businesses that produce fresh food for us.

We have had a few fun afternoons refreshing ourselves with coding and iMovie as part of our Media Arts and Digital Technology unit. Students will revisit skills they learnt in Term 1 about Green Screen and they will be introduced to Stop Motion. They are creating a trailer to demonstrate the Paddock to Plate process of selected food. We had fun with the Sphero robots from Senior School and Scratch JR when we reviewed our coding knowledge.

Well done to all the students for their efforts at the Inter-House Athletics carnival I was very proud of everyone.

Stay safe.

Year 6 News: Mr Turner

This term in HASS, we are looking at the finer workings of our

democracy and how our Federal Government works, in regards to

looking after existing laws, suggesting new laws and putting laws into

action through various government departments. As we have begun to

set up our classroom to simulate the House of Representatives in

Canberra. The students will be writing their own Bills to introduce to

Parliament and looking at how the voting process happens in a

democracy.

Since our Canberra trip has been cancelled, we will be able to access

virtual tours of the places we were to visit, as well as Parliament

House. We will also be investigating the three types of governing

power in Australia –The Legislative, The Executive and The Judiciary.

We will see how they carry out their roles and responsibilities without

interference from the other. This process is called the Separation of

Powers. However, just to make things a little more complicated, there

is a further concept which overlays this principle called Responsible

Government.

We will have a 5 day/4 night trip away in Term 4 to Mungalli Falls (near

Millaa Millaa). More information will be coming home once I have

finalised the itinerary, accommodation, meal plan etc. and of course

the final costs. An information evening will also be held later this term

to go over the details of the trip.

In Design Technology, we have started on our car modification design.

The children are finding that some of their ideas are good in theory,

but need changes in practice, so their car can cover the required

distance for their assessment, as well as look aesthetically pleasing.

This has tested their patience, problem-solving and fine motor skills

when working with small parts and pieces.

In conjunction with learning how democracy started, we are also

making Ancient Athenian and Spartan battle helmets in Art. The

children will discover through different Art pieces that Athenian

democracy developed in the 5th century B.C., through the notion of

peaceful transfers of power between all adult citizens. However,

sometimes that wasn’t always the case and the Athenians and the

Spartans often went to war. These wars culminated into Athens being

absorbed into the Spartan Empire, which in turn was controlled by

tyrants until eventually democracy prevailed and citizens had the

power to elect its leaders once again. The children will discover just

how old and how many different versions there are of democracy.

JS HPE & SPORT NEWS: Miss Browne

ALL THINGS ATHLETICS:

At the Junior School Inter-House Athletics Carnival, we saw a fantastic display of hard work and encouragement both on and off the field. Not only was it fantastic to see the Junior School competitors cheering on their team mates, but we were lucky enough to have some of our Senior School students there to support them too. Everyone working together and supporting one another is the epitome of the All Souls St Gabriels School culture.

Students of all ages participated in a number of events to earn points for their House. There was an extremely strong sense of the ‘get in and have a go’ attitude, as many students remembered that every point counted. This was especially obvious in the overall results, where our winning House took the trophy with only three points between them and second place. Congratulations to Alban and Ramsay who received the combined House trophy for 2020.

A big thank you to all of the family and friends who came to support our students at the carnival. We also need to thank Mrs Jenni Hare, all of the staff and the Senior School students who helped with the smooth running of the carnival.

CONGRATULATIONS RECORD BREAKERS

REPRESENTATIVE SPORT

Congratulations to Annie-May Johnson and Olivia Geoghegan who were chosen to represent Charters Towers at the Northern Queensland Softball Trials on August 10.

TOTALLY TERRIFIC TENNIS

The start to Term 3 has seen all students from Pre-prep right through to Year 6 exploring the game of tennis. The students in the early years have been practising their hand-eye co-ordination skills in a number of fun and competitive tennis related games and activities. The students from Year 3 to 6 have been focused on learning more about the forehand and backhand stroke. They have really blown me away with their ability to pick up new skills quickly. It is amazing how accurately they can hit the ball over the net when you throw a little competition their way. We will continue to build on their tennis skills and look forward to developing their ability to perform rallies throughout the remainder of the term.

COMING SOON:

Unfortunately, the Inter-School Sport for our Year 5 and 6 students has not looked the way we had hoped it would this term. While there has been a delay in getting things up and running due to Covid-19, we hope to finalise some opportunities for our students to take part in some friendly competition soon. Watch this space!

Music News: Mrs Sellars

Our Pre-preps have their passports at the ready and planned their travel around the world this

semester, with planned stops in countries such as Germany, Switzerland, New Zealand and more!

When we “stop” in each country, we’ll take a look at the iconic tourist attractions before learning a

song or a dance based on the traditions of the country.

Preps are learning about instrument families of the orchestra. We’ve visited the Music rooms in

Senior School to investigate strumming, plucking and bowing stringed instruments, and Miss

Croker helped us learn all about brass and woodwind instruments. We’ve even had the opportunity

to play some of the instruments we’re investigating.

When you walk into a lesson with Years 1 and 2, you might want to grab some headphones as we

practise our knowledge of rhythm on untuned percussion instruments and everyday household

items (and some junk). We kicked off the term by learning to sing “Octopus’ Garden” and over the

next few weeks, we’ll be learning to play a rhythm using drum sticks and plastic cups to match the

song.

Years 3 and 4 are continuing to progress through the Keyboard Karate program, practising their

music skills through reading music and playing rhythm.

Eric Clapton once said, “the guitar is the most versatile instrument…you can pick it up and take it

with you wherever you go.” I am very excited to be teaching Years 5 and 6 to play guitar this

semester. We’ll be learning to strum chords and play guitar to simple songs that we can sing

along with.

I am looking forward to sharing our music learning journey with the Junior School students this

semester.

German: Frau Dunn

Welcome back to Term 3. This term, all year levels will be learning all about the animal world in German.

Animal words are always a fun way to learn new words in another language and children soon realise that

lots of words in German are very similar to our English ones.

The younger year levels have been enjoying animal Bingo games and are becoming familiar with words to

describe simple characteristics of animals. It is all about joining in and having a go, to build their confidence

with the sounds and rhythms of the German language.

From Year 3 up, there has been a focus on the elements of German grammar and in particular the

importance of becoming familiar with how articles change and influence other words in our sentences. It

can sometimes feel like a very tricky mathematical equation, but once the basics are taught/learnt, then

putting the rest of it together makes more sense. Practising the language with each other is always carried

out in lessons. The children enjoy getting up, moving around and interacting with each other in German.

Library Link: Mrs Silverwood

Welcome back to Term 3. I am really hoping, as I am sure you are that we have an uninterrupted full term at

school. The children all seem to be happy to be back with friends and settling back into the routine.

Things are a little different this term with the library. The students have a new limit (2) on the number of

library books that can be borrowed. As one little person said, “Is that because you have to wash the books

now?” And the answer is yes. We use sanitising wipes on all books returned to the library before they are re-

shelved. This task is completed by me or Mrs Clark.

At this time of the year we are usually in full swing with the Children’s Book Council of Australia – Book Week

celebration preparations. Due to an unusual Term 2, I am pleased to say this has been postponed the until

fourth term. We are working on whole class group activities this year rather than individual activities. Some

of the groups seem quite keen and have come up with a book feature they would like to share at a Junior

School Assembly. Book Week starts on a Saturday this year (OCTOBER 17-23 2020). Stay tuned.

Just a reminder, we would like all students from Prep

to Year 4 to have a library bag to carry their books

in. It is quite a walk to the library and many a book

has hit the dust accidentally on said journey. I would

also encourage the Year 5 and Year 6 students to

also have a library (or plastic) bag to protect their

library books.
