UPCOMING

EVENTS

BOX TOP DRIVE

FEBRUARY 1-15

The class that submits the

highest percentage of

Box Tops will earn an

ice-cream party!

Junior High Jazz SHAPIN’ UP WITH SHUBERT

DARE has begun and the students have been great with participation and

listening to Chief Wuebbles. This will continue for approximately three

more weeks.

7th grade will finish health on Tuesday with a test over the Nervous and

Endocrine Systems.

Classes will also be completing the Knights of Columbus free throw

contest in class as well.

Hoops for Heart information has been passed out. Please consider

donating to this worthwhile cause. Donations made online result in FREE

PE equipment for us!!

THE BAND PLAYED ON

We had our first accompanist practice for contest this week. The same

schedule will be used for the next two weeks. Please encourage your child

to practice, so they are prepared and can keep up with the VERY tight

practice schedule moving forward. Practicing will also ensure a rewarding

contest experience on February 25th.

Students are working very hard in lessons and rehearsals. We just need

each member to learn their part, so that the ensemble can grow musically.

Thank you to all who are working their shifts at the Volleyball

concessions.

Uniform fitting day is March 7th after school.

“PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT”

7th Language Arts: We have finished our persuasive letter, and we will now begin

focusing on preparing to attack the PARCC test. We have a great foundation to build

from, but it is very important to understand the different types of questions featured

on the exam and how to effectively answer each one. As a result, we will be learning

about a few strategies that can help us do our best and how to apply them.

7th Literature: We have finished Treasure Island, and we will now be focusing on

our next novel, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Students need to have their

copies of the novel ready to use in class starting on Monday, February 13th.

8th Language Arts: We are wrapping up our nonfiction unit and will continue

applying analytical strategies to texts focusing specifically on connections between the

text and ideas/events and using textual evidence to support the interpretation (RI 8.1,

RI 8.3). Afterwards, we will shift begin preparing to attack the PARCC test. One of the

most important parts of preparing for an exam is understanding how to effectively

answer questions. As a result, we will be learning about different question types and a

few strategies that can help us do our best.

8th Literature: We are continuing to read and discuss the novel The Outsiders by

S. E. Hinton. Students need to bring their novels to class every day. This week we are

focusing on analyzing the novel and dialogue as a means to propel the plot (RL 8.1 ,

RL 8.3). We will also be comparing events in the novel to a piece of nonfiction

(RI 8.7).

Keep in mind that we are halfway through the quarter, so it is very

important to work on AR every night!

8th Grade Science: We pushed our Chemistry Unit test back again due to

the need of a cumulative Post-Test. The Chemistry Unit Test will be next week

and will include a paper vocabulary portion and a problem solving white board

portion.

7th Grade Science: We will complete our Genetics Unit with incomplete

and codominance and test over this material next week.

6th Grade Science: We took a cumulative Post-Test this week that they put

a lot of effort into. Next week we will continue into Deep Space and gain a

better understanding of what is all out there in our Universe.

5th Grade Science: We are currently researching common injuries. We will

be creating PowerPoint presentations on the scientific/medical version of

these injuries next week.

7th Grade Green Screen: We are slowly but surely all learning how to edit

videos. The frustration is real!

EVERSGERD’S WORDS

5th LA: We will start the period this week with DOL week 11 with a quiz on

Thursday. Some skills we will work with are irregulars, quotes and tags,

direct address, intro word, abbreviation, proper nouns, and the spelling rule

is changing ‘y’ to an ‘i’ before adding ‘es’ or ‘ed’. We will continue our lesson

on adjectives focusing on identifying them in sentences, proper adjectives,

comparatives/superlatives, and demonstratives.

6th ELA: We will start our afternoon with Bellwork 22/23. We will check

this on Thursday, so you need to take it home Wednesday evening. We will

finish our point of view posters on Monday. We will then change our focus to

RL.6.1 which deals with quoting, paraphrasing, text evidence, explicit

details, and making inferences. We have touched on this standard earlier in

the year, so this will be our second go!

Remember, we are shooting for 100% of our goals in AR this

quarter, so please read every night!!

5th Grade Literature: Next week, the students will be working on a combination of strategies reviewing all of the standards covered so far. Half of the battle of the PARCC assessment is knowing and understanding HOW to answer a question. This is exactly why all of next week will be spent by students analyzing different types of questions and examining the different types of graphic organizers that correlate with each. This week is one of the most important one’s of the year!

Also, please have your child continue to work hard to meet his or her AR goal. Because I don’t give homework, this is one area that is solely up to them!

5th Grade Math: Next week, the students will continue working on 5.MD.5 focusing on the many strategies to calculate the volume of geometric figures. This standard is heavily emphasized on the PARCC assessment which is right around the corner.

Please encourage your child to practice on Study Island for at least 15-20 minutes each night. A few concepts to focus on include Add and Subtract Fractions, Multiply and Divide Decimals, Add and Subtract Decimals, Area, Units of Measurement, Representing and Interpreting Data, and Order of Operations. Every little bit of extra practice helps!

MR. GLYNN’S SOCIAL STUDIES SCOOP

5th: This week the students will continue studying westward expansion. They

will be reading informational texts that are secondary and primary resources.

We will also be reviewing standards RI.5.1-9 by answering questions based on

each text. We will also be doing a simulation of the Oregon Trail. We will have

an assessment on Thursday. Students will be able to use the texts we have been

using in class

6th: We will be continuing our unit on the Middle Ages. This week students will

be constructing a timeline of keys events. They will also be planning a talk show

where students will be studying different point of views with in the feudalism

system (RI6.6)

7th: We will be continuing our unit on the Age of Exploration. We will be

focusing on Christopher Columbus and the treatment of natives. The students

will analyze multiple perspectives and determine how they differ ( RI.7.6). We

will have an assessment on Thursday.

8th: We will continue our unit on World War II. We will be analyzing how

Hitler came in to power and the rise of Nazism. Students will analyze how text

makes connections between individuals and events (RI.8.3).

Student Council

6th grade: Students will be finding the area of triangles,

quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing into rectangles or

decomposing in triangles and other shapes. There is a possible quiz

this week. (6.G.1)

Study Island– Positive and Negative numbers, Opposites, Number

Lines, Coordinate Plane, Distance on the Coordinate Plane, Absolute

Value, and Quantitative Relationships (Any concepts covered so far—

the students know which ones they each need to practice. Even 5

questions per night would be greatly beneficial!)

7th grade: They will be learning how to find compound probability

by using lists, tables, tree diagrams, and simulation. There is a

possible quiz this week. (7.SP.8)

Study Island– Understanding Probability, Approximate

Probability, Uniform Probability, and Non-uniform Probability (Any

concepts covered so far—the students know which ones they each

need to practice. Even 5 questions per night would be greatly

beneficial!)

8th grade: Students will be learning how to interpret the slope-

intercept equation as an equation that represent a line. We will dive

deeper into determining if a function is linear or non-linear. There is

a possible quiz this week. (8.F.3)

Study Island– Understanding Functions, Compare Functions,

Pythagorean Theorem, and Distance (Any concepts covered so far—

the students know which ones they each need to practice. Even 5

questions per night would be greatly beneficial!)

Algebra: Students will learn properties about quadratic functions in

chapter 9. There is a possible quiz this week.
