The 31st of May will see the launch ofJungle Jim, a pulp fiction
magazine,featuring writing from around Africa. Co-founded by
designer Hannes Bernard,and filmmaker Jenna Bass, the magazine will
be available twice a month from June2011.
Pulp magazines, which reached their peak in the 1950s, were a
form of cheapentertainment, with their racy illustrations and tales
of danger and extremes,dreamt up by writers with overflowing
imaginations.
We wanted to embrace everything that was great about the pulp
tradition:gripping stories, shock and horror, while staying true to
format by making themagazine really affordable and frequent, says
Hannes.
Each issue features narrative-driven stories in genres from
sci-fi to western,
representing countries across Africa, all accompanied by bold
illustrations.
Jenna comments, We were soon contacted by writers from all over
the Africawho shared our ideals. It was thrilling to receive a
sci-fi from Ghana, a pirateromance from South Africa, to reaffirm
that writers around our continent areproducing great stories.
She continues, Pulp was often about unknown worlds, the exotic,
the feared. Byreviving the concept here, were really excited to see
what arises when the visceraldaring-do of pulp collides with the
realities of living in Africa.
The first issue ofJungle Jim features work by the artist Nikhil
Singh, Somali writerAbdul Adan, a taste of Kwei Quarteys upcoming
Ghanain detective novel,
Children of the Street, as well as the first part in a Haiti-set
serial by South Africancult filmmaker, Richard Stanley.
The launch will be held at The Book Lounge, Cape Town at 5.30pm,
31st May2011. Jungle Jim will be available at locations in Cape
Town, Johannesburg andonline.
