Minutes from May’s Meeting

The May 23, 2017 meeting was called to order by President, Judy White-

head. There were 23 members and 5 guests attending the meeting.

Deb Waldron introduced the May program – Modern Applique by Kath-

leen Baden. Kathleen has taught quilting for 20 years, and dove into the mod-

ern movement about 5 years ago. She presented a trunk show on Modern Ap-

plique. Kathleen will also be conducting a modern applique workshop on

Wednesday, May 24.

Kathleen’s website, https://kbquilts.com, has information about her stu-

dents’ work and a gallery of photos.

The business meeting began following Kathleen’s program.

Judy Whitehead asked for a membership vote on whether to have show-

and-tell before or after the business meeting. This was a request brought for-

ward by one of our Members-at-Large.

The Guild voted to have show-and-tell before the business meeting. That

change will begin at the June meeting. Judy Whitehead emphasized the im-

portance of Guild members participating in the business meeting after show-

and-tell.

Dolores Forbare reported the treasury has a balance of $9,931.85. The col-

lection for the Mooresville Soup Kitchen was $56.

For the monthly mini quilt and accessory, Judy Whitehead showed sam-

ples. The May block is Summertime Fun, and the May accessory is a casserole

carrier.

Diana Jasany thanked the Guild members for their participation in her

Girl Scout project – Diana’s Golden Needle. She received the Gold Award from

the Girl Scouts for her project that made 117 Trip-Around-the World twin size

quilts, 75 other pattern twin size quilts and 44 baby quilts. Laura and Diana

provided a cake thanking Guild members.

Laura also presented Diana with a Trip-Around-the-World quilt in honor

of Diana’s Gold Award. The quilt backing includes tee-shirts and photographs

of Diana’s journey for the project.

Minutes from May’s Meeting, Continued

Colleen Thrailkill reported about six Guild members met at her home re-

cently for a workday making items for the upcoming Quilt Show gift shop. The

items included potato pockets, fabric boxes and microwave potholders. Colleen

asked members to make mug buddies from pre-cut fabric kits.

Guild members were reminded to send information for the newsletter to

Snow Wildsmith.

Guild members were also reminded about the Guild Scholarship Fund to

be used for workshops, and the Blue-Yellow-Green challenge for the Quilt

Show. The challenge deadline is the July meeting.

Laurie Jasany told members about two new library books for the Square-

in-a-Square technique from the March meeting and workshop.

Julie Murphy gave an update on the Quilt Show. Julie announced that

Cindy Magee, her Co-Chair, is moving to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania due to her

husband’s job. Cindy will be moving to Pittsburgh before the Quilt Show.

Julie emphasized the need for quilt submissions for the show. She asked

members to submit quilts, even if they don’t want the quilts judged.

Julie would like to display winning quilts from prior shows. She asked

members, who have winning quilts from prior shows, to submit the quilts using

the entry form and indicate the year and prize the quilt won.

Julie and Colleen encouraged members to submit their entry forms as

soon as possible. The entry form is on the Guild website. Julie said she would

also send, via email, a spreadsheet that enables members to populate the entry

form directly from the spreadsheet.

Judy Whitehead asked for a volunteer to assist with making ribbons that

are paper pieced. Barbara Barrier volunteered to assist Judy.

Quilt Show Committee Chairs will have their volunteer sign-up sheets

available at the June meeting.

1. Please sign out any books you borrow.

Upcoming Programs

July

July is our annual salad and dessert potluck. Please feel free to

share your tastiest recipe for all of us to gawk over! In addition, we will

have a business meeting to answer questions regarding quilt show is-

sues or quilt guild issues or anything else anybody wants to bring to

the table, so to speak. I will be asking for volunteers to decorate tables

– I figure 6….? Thanks!

Workshop

July 29th (Saturday) we will be having our scrap quilt workshop. The

design we voted on was Trail Mix. Here is the link to the pattern:

http://www.allpeoplequilt.com/quilt-patterns/bed-quilts/trail-mix I al-

ready have my baggies labeled and some scraps in them – haha – seri-

ously, I must decrease this mess of scraps I have on hand!

August

Our August meeting is the Quilt Show Wrap UP! So let’s make it fun!

September

Our speaker is Bea Lea; she is a quilter from NC that has designed nu-

merous quilts that have been published in Quiltmaker Magazine as

well as others. She is going to present on EQ7, she has numerous tuto-

rials on her website. Her website is: www.beaquilter.com , check it out

– in addition her blog is sweet and she does lots with Accuquilt for

those of you that have one. Let me know if there’s anything you want

her to cover as I will be contacting her soon to hash out the agenda.

Upcoming Programs

Wed, Sept. 27

ROAD TRIP (we love road trips in this house!) Our goal is YLI Threads,

tour the facility, check out the items and for those that wish, a stop at

Mary Jos.

October

Our presenter is Margaret Caughman and her lecture is, “Granny,

Grandma and Me, the Journey of 3 Generations of Quilters.” I have

heard she is a great story teller and has quilters to back up her stories!

What could be better???

Workshop Oct. 25 (Wednesday)

The workshop for October is by Jennifer Kay – she is another NC quilt-

er with an incredible eye for design and color. She is also a longarmer

and has numerous awards in her name. Additionally, she is a repre-

sentative for Marti Mitchell and don’t we all love her rulers. Hopefully,

I will have a sample or at least a picture of what we will be doing.

November

Besides presenting our table runners as we do every November, we are

going to have our auction in November. This gives us some time after

the Quilt Show to “clean out” as well as any left-over remnants from

the show that we might barter off. This can be a huge money maker for

the Guild so that is our goal this year!

— Deb Waldron

Quilt Show News It’s getting closer! Please submit your entries. Please submit your

entries. Remember, even if your quilts aren’t finished, you may submit

the entry form as long as you have a picture that enables us to identify the

finished product. Story cards need to be created for each entry – please

don’t make Colleen do 200 at once! Deadline is June 27th – the June

Guild Meeting. The entry form can be found on the Guild Website --

https://lknquilters.files.wordpress.com/2017/04/2017-entry-formfinal2.pdf

Time to Step-up! Sign up sheets for various posts for the quilt show will

be at the May meeting. Please visit the sign-up table. There will be many

opportunities for before and during the show – Intake, Judging, Welcome

Table, Vendors, Playpen Frenzy, Gift Shoppe, Donation Quilt, and of

course setup and takedown.

Blue-Yellow-Green Challenge – Have yours ready to bring to the July

meeting. We are doing an in-house judging – ribbons will be awarded by

your fellow guild members for their favorite quilts. And then you can en-

ter your quilt in the show in its correct category, and if you should so

choose, it will be judged by the official quilt judges.

Ads – Have you handed a business person one of our advertising forms?

Keep one or two forms in your purse and give them to any local business

person you have contact with. We could surely use a few more to help

with expenses this year. Businesses really do want to be supportive! In

the past we have made over $900 selling ads – let’s see if we can top that

number.

Gift Shoppe Items – keep them coming ladies! Your work is amazing and

will proudly be sold in the gift shoppe at our show.

Vendors – We still have a couple of open spots for Vendors. Please give

Snow any ideas you may have for additional names of people who may be

able to fill these spots.

A Call for Quilts! Marian Lytle, Director of the Mooresville Library has graciously

and enthusiastically agreed to display an assortment of our quilts in

the Library to help pique interest in our August Lake Norman Quilters

Quilt Show.

What an opportunity to show off our handiwork!

We are hoping to get (ON LOAN OF COURSE) 8 to 12 small or

medium size quilts from our guild members representing a range of

quilting and styles and techniques. Surely, you would love to have your

favorite quilt in this display. Quilts need not be new. Five, ten years

old? Fine!

The quilts will be displayed (secured to the railing) between the

Main and Ground floors of the Library from Thursday, July 20 thru

Monday August 7 along with Show information.

SIZE MATTERS---48” W x 60” L or smaller.

If you would like to help make this a great promotion please email

or mail me a picture of your quilt or at least a description and dimen-

sions. We will select a variety for the display and make arrangements

to get the quilts in July.

ONE CAVEAT--- The Library has good Security but cannot

accept liability for the quilts, so please keep this in mind.

Looking forward to hearing from you,
