Recognizing Pain in Animals, There's An App For That!
"...They have identified eight features of pain in horses including some that also apply to humans. These include tightening around the eyes, tightened chewing muscles, and strained
mouth and nostrils. And, of course, there are some features specific to horses such as the ears being held stiffly in a backward or sideways position. To assess pain, one must score the various features and add up the numbers to make a Horse Grimace Score. In testing the procedure, the research team used this score to judge the effectiveness of pain management for the process of gelding..."(read more)

Breaking Barriers and Building Bridges
ISES 2015 August 5-8
The theme Breaking Barriers and Building Bridges is reflected in topics that include round pen training techniques, therapeutic riding horses, learning theory in equine veterinary practice, and papers that compare and contrast
horse welfare across different disciplines. The emotional state of animals is explored in papers addressing temperament assessments, eye wrinkles and wither scratching/neck patting responses from horses under saddle. In addition, there are thought provoking questions such as "is it possible to judge if a horse is a happy athlete?" Training techniques and equipment are presented in papers addressing hyperflexion, the use of artificial aids by riders, rein tension in a variety of applications, bitless bridles, saddle pad thickness, stirrup length, nose twitching and target training... Monthly Features
Trail of the Month
June's Trail of the Month is the Nine Mile Ridge Trail in the South Cariboo region. Nine Mile Ridge is in the Shulaps Range. If the Spruce Lake area is the hub of the Chilcotin area; the Shulaps is one of the spokes and the Nine Mile Ridge area is one of the nipples on the spoke. It is a remote area where it is said there are more grizzly bears than there are people. This protected area lies approximately 150 km north of Whistler and 95 km west of Lillooet. The horse trail along Nine Mile Ridge is accessible from both the Yalakom River and from South French Bar creek. It passes over a height-of-land at Gunsight Pass. There are spectacular views of the Shulaps range, Blue Creek, Yalakom Mountain, and Nine Mile Ridge itself. For additional information, check out our Online Trail Database. Do you have pictures you'd like to include on the listing, or updated information about this area? If so, email [email protected].
