1 June/July 2016 REFLECTIONS FROM THE PASTOR Most of us look forward to the warm weather and the change of pace that comes with summer. That doesn’t mean that summer is not busy, it just means the next three months will be busy in different ways: summer sports, picnics, reunions, day trips… And even though I consider summer vacation a lot of work for those of us who do most of the planning and preparing, clothes packing and washing, I for one still look forward to that time away. So even though I enjoy being your pastor and I often feel blessed by the privi- lege of serving Christ alongside you, I truly enjoy a change of scenery, getting out of town, and when possi- ble, seeing new places. This summer, Peter and I will vacation in a part of the country we have never preciously been. We are heading to Montana, and spending time in both Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks. We are going to do a lot more walking and hiking than our bodies are used to and I’m sure we will feel it afterwards. Be- cause our typical daily lives are in two different states and 5-5 ½ hours apart, vacation is an important time to be together and reconnect. This change of pace from what is typical and the opportunity to have fun to- gether is very good for us as a couple. But that’s not all, because personally I often experience vacation as a time of renewal - spiritual, mental and even physical renewal. Yes, I freely admit that I appreciate time away from the church. I plan on enjoying my two weeks of vaca- tion in July, but those will be the only two weeks that I will be a “no show” at church this summer. Other- wise, I will be in my office during the week, leading worship on Sundays, and attending to the other tasks that pastors typically attend to from day to day and week to week. So I guess what I’m hoping for is a simi- lar assurance from you. I know that people go away, but when you are at home make a point of worshiping God and connecting with your church family on Sunday morning at either 9 am or 11 am worship. Don’t do it for me, even though I enjoy seeing you (and I feel discouraged when I don’t see you), do it for the God who has greatly blessed and continues to bless your life. Scripturally, worship is at the heart of our spiritual life as both individual Christians and as the corporal Body of Christ. Through the act of worship, we are provided with a weekly opportunity to praise and adore, to hear and respond to the One who is our Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer in life. I truly hope that whatever you do, and wherever you go this summer you will have fun with people you love and you will experience the personal blessing of renewal. But when you are not away, I hope you will be in worship on Sunday morning and that you will find other ways to live out your faith through acts of service and witness. The UMC of CF will not shut down for the summer, and ministry in the name of Jesus Christ will not cease. Together, let us work and worship to the glory of God all summer long! Pastor Joyce

June/July 2016

REFLECTIONS FROM THE PASTOR

Most of us look forward to the warm weather and the change of pace that comes with summer. That

doesn’t mean that summer is not busy, it just means the next three months will be busy in different ways:

summer sports, picnics, reunions, day trips… And even though I consider summer vacation a lot of work

for those of us who do most of the planning and preparing, clothes packing and washing, I for one still look

forward to that time away. So even though I enjoy being your pastor and I often feel blessed by the privi-

lege of serving Christ alongside you, I truly enjoy a change of scenery, getting out of town, and when possi-

ble, seeing new places.

This summer, Peter and I will vacation in a part of the country we have never preciously been. We are

heading to Montana, and spending time in both Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks. We are going to

do a lot more walking and hiking than our bodies are used to and I’m sure we will feel it afterwards. Be-

cause our typical daily lives are in two different states and 5-5 ½ hours apart, vacation is an important time

to be together and reconnect. This change of pace from what is typical and the opportunity to have fun to-

gether is very good for us as a couple. But that’s not all, because personally I often experience vacation as

a time of renewal - spiritual, mental and even physical renewal.

Yes, I freely admit that I appreciate time away from the church. I plan on enjoying my two weeks of vaca-

tion in July, but those will be the only two weeks that I will be a “no show” at church this summer. Other-

wise, I will be in my office during the week, leading worship on Sundays, and attending to the other tasks

that pastors typically attend to from day to day and week to week. So I guess what I’m hoping for is a simi-

lar assurance from you. I know that people go away, but when you are at home make a point of worshiping

God and connecting with your church family on Sunday morning at either 9 am or 11 am worship. Don’t

do it for me, even though I enjoy seeing you (and I feel discouraged when I don’t see you), do it for the God

who has greatly blessed and continues to bless your life. Scripturally, worship is at the heart of our spiritual

life as both individual Christians and as the corporal Body of Christ. Through the act of worship, we are

provided with a weekly opportunity to praise and adore, to hear and respond to the One who is our Creator,

Redeemer and Sustainer in life.

I truly hope that whatever you do, and wherever you go this summer you will have fun with people you

love and you will experience the personal blessing of renewal. But when you are not away, I hope you will

be in worship on Sunday morning and that you will find other ways to live out your faith through acts of

service and witness. The UMC of CF will not shut down for the summer, and ministry in the name of Jesus

Christ will not cease. Together, let us work and worship to the glory of God all summer long!

WORSHIP SURVEY From May 1-23, we received 156 worship surveys, either directly submitted electronically or paper cop-

ies that were then entered into survey monkey. The Worship Team would like to thank everyone who

took the time to participate in the survey. On Sunday, June 5, from about 10-11 am in the sanctuary, the

results of those surveys will be presented by Kim Berger, our church Lay Leader. If you are not able to

be present, but are interested in the results, see Kim Berger. Some results will be printed in the August

Bell Tower, which is the next scheduled newsletter. The Worship Team will be considering the results

of the survey as they meet to formulate a recommendation to present at the Church Council meeting on

June 21.

SUMMER WORSHIP During the summer months we will continue to worship at 9 am and 11 am. Coffee Fellowship will

be from 10-11 am in the courtyard (weather permitting). HOWEVER, the exceptions to that schedule

will be the two holiday weekends of July 4 and Labor Day. On Sunday, July 3 and September 4,

there will be ONE COMBINED SERVICE at 10AM with a time for Coffee Fellowship following at

11 am.

As is typical, the Chancel Choir will not be singing during the summer months. A time for the “Hymns

We Love to Sing” will be enjoyed at the beginning of 9 am worship throughout the summer, and at 11

am worship on the Sundays when Shepherds of Sound does not sing. SOS (Shepherds of Sound) will

take about a month off, but they are planning to sing at the 11 am service on five Sundays: June 12 and

19, July 31, and August 14 and 21. Special music (soloists and ensembles) will be coordinated by our

Director of Music, David Gilson, for the weekly 9 am service and for 11 am service (when SOS is not

singing). Please see David if you would like to be a soloist or participate in an ensemble sometime dur-

ing the summer. To get an idea of Special Music worship opportunities, please take a look at the sched-

ule/sign-up sheet posted on the bulletin board outside the office.

Dr. Charles Yoost will be our guest preacher on Sunday, June 5, at both 9 am and 11 am worship.

Dr. Yoost and his wife, Barb, have been regularly attending worship at Chagrin Falls since his retirement

last summer as lead pastor of Church of the Savior UMC in Cleveland Heights. Dr. Yoost also led a

four-week Advent Study at Chagrin Falls in December. We are so pleased to have him sharing God’s

word with us on the fifth! Rev. Joyce will be attending her granddaughter’s baptism at Canfield UMC

that day.

THE PASTOR WILL BE ON VACATION JULY 4 – JULY 18. Most of that time will be spent in

Montana. While away, the congregation can look forward to Bob Myers sharing a morning message on

July 10 and Dr. Charles Yoost sharing a message on July 17.

FROM THE WORSHIP TEAM •On Sunday, July 3, one combined Worship Service will be held at 10 am.

•The Worship Team will meet on Monday, August 1 at 7 pm. Present members of the team and any

church members interested in serving on this team are asked to attend.

Please note...

There will be one combined Worship Service

at 10 am on Sunday, July 3!

YOUTH ANNUAL CONFERENCE is June 10-12 Our own Director of Christian Education and Youth, Bob Myers, is the featured speaker for this year’s

event for East Ohio youth. Several of our CF youth (as well as a few CF adults) plan on being present to

support Bob. Hold Bob in your prayers!

ANNUAL CONFERENCE is June 13-16 Reverend Joyce and Sarah Alexander, our church lay delegate, will represent the UMC of Chagrin Falls

at this summer’s East Ohio Annual Conference at Lakeside, Ohio. Of course, Bob Myers will also be

there fulfilling his leadership responsibilities in the Conference.

ANNUAL CONFERENCE MISSION OPPORTUNITIES When Rev. Joyce and Sarah head to Lakeside, they will take with them the donated Health & Layette

kits and make sure they get on the truck bound for the United Methodist Church UMCOR Midwest Dis-

tribution Center. All kit donations must be in the box in the narthex by the end of worship on Sunday,

June 12.

There is an additional way church members can support the mission work of the UMC around the world.

As described in May’s Bell Tower and Sunday morning bulletins, we will also take a donation for

“Imagine No Malaria.” This long-standing and very successful project provides for the purchasing and

distribution of treated mosquito nets, as well as malaria education and health care. If you would like to

give a money donation make sure you note “No Malaria” on the memo line of your check or place cash

in an envelope marked “No Malaria.” Because a check must be issued, “Imagine No Malaria” donations

must be placed in an offering plate by Sunday, June 5, or received by the church office no later than

Wednesday, June 8th.

Meet the Team Sunday, June 12 between services. Join us for fellowship/coffee hour after the 9:00

service or prior to the 11:00 service to learn more about Outreach activities at our church. Ask ques-

tions, see where you’d like to “connect.” Team members will be in the courtyard (weather permitting;

otherwise in Harris Hall). Everyone welcome!

Apostles’ Build/Habitat for Humanity

Our first of three events this year on Saturday, May 7 was well attended. Volunteers are working in a

new area, the Buckeye Neighborhood, and the overall response to this Chagrin Valley Council of

Churches project is huge! Twenty three area churches will support three local Habitat for Humanity pro-

jects this spring and summer. Our next dates are Saturday, Sept. 10, and Saturday, October 19 from

9:00 am-3:30 pm. We need to form a team of 8 - 10 volunteers for each of the dates selected. No

Skills Required, just a willingness to be flexible as our “work” will depend on what those before us ac-

complish. Marty Sallach is our coordinator. The Outreach Team hopes to make Apostles Build a whole

church outreach project and will let you know about various non-build opportunities to help this

summer. Sign up on the Outreach portion of the foyer bulletin board, email Marty, or call the church of-

fice to commit to a date.

Crop Walk

$$$$ just keeps coming in! To date, this April 24 event “to end hunger one step at a time” has exceeded

last year’s numbers in both participation and financial contributions by more than 33%! Thank you to

all the walkers and sponsors!

Cleveland Food Bank We’ve been counted among the more than 63,000 hours of volunteer service to the Cleveland Food

Bank (CFB) last year. Volunteers can prepare meals in their kitchen, sort food donations in the ware-

house, hand out fresh fruits and vegetables at mass produce distributions, and work on office projects.

Although our monthly commitments are now on “summer vacation,” you can still volunteer! Contact

CFB directly at 216.738.7240 or email: [email protected].

Looking ahead, Help Me Learn School Supplies Collection begins in late July.

First Sunday Food Collection Sunday, June 5 Sunday, July 3

Please bring your non-perishable donations and leave them in the barrel in the Narthex. All donations support area food pantries. Thank you for your generosity!

Church Council will meet on Tuesday, June 21, at 7:00 pm. This is a week later than usual

because of Annual Conference. There is no Council meeting in July. In August, we will meet on Tues-

day, August 9.

MINISTRY TEAMS At the heart of our active and hands on ministry here at The UMC of Chagrin Falls are seven ministry

teams: Christian Education, Communications, Fellowship, Membership Care, Outreach, Worship, and

Youth. These ministry teams plan, initiate, coordinate and carry out a majority of what happens in re-

gards to the work and mission of the church. The ability of these teams to fulfill Christ’s Great Commis-

sion to all Christians to actively engage in making and maturing disciples of Jesus Christ is dependent on

those who are willing to attend meetings and do the work. In other words, it takes participants! Is

Christ calling you to join a ministry team? Seriously and prayerfully consider this question. Please do

not wait for someone to ask you; follow the Lord’s leading in your life and take the initiative to partici-

pate. Those who serve on Ministry Teams do not have specific “terms of service,” but instead serve for

as long as God leads them to serve in that way (from a few months to a few years). Typically, most of

the teams meet on either the first Monday or Tuesday of the month; however, summer is a time when

things tend to get a bit off schedule. Please take note of the following Team meetings through the begin-

ning of August, and plan to participate!

Christian Education – Sunday, July 24, 10:00 am

Communications – Monday, June 13, 7:00 pm, Monday, August 1, 7:00 pm

Fellowship – Monday, August 1, 7:00 pm

Membership Care – Tuesday August 2, 7:00 pm

Outreach – (no meeting scheduled until August 31)

Worship – Monday, June 5, 7:00 pm, Monday, August 1, 7:00 pm

Youth – (no meeting scheduled at this time)

NEW MEMBERS

On Sunday, May 15 (Pentecost), at our 9 am

worship service, we welcomed Owen and Toni

Foster into our UMC of Chagrin Falls family. The

Fosters previously lived in this area, and have re-

cently moved back to Chagrin Falls from New

York. Toni is retired and enjoys quilting, walking,

hiking, biking and cross country skiing. Owen is

in Corporate Development at RMC and enjoys

tennis, pickle ball, skiing, sailing walking and hik-

ing. The Foster’s faith friends are Pete and Tina

Bongiovanni. If you have not met them already,

please introduce yourself to the Fosters and wel-

come them into our church family.

2016 FINANCE UPDATE: Our YTD deficit through the end of April is $23,221 as

shown in the graph below. Although the deficit is slightly less than year, we continue to

need your financial support in meeting our budget and staying current with expenses as

we head into the middle part of the year.

SAVE THE DATE: SECOND ANNUAL CRAFT AND VENDOR SALE: The Fi-

nance Committee will once again sponsor a Craft and Vendor sale to raise funds in sup-

port of the church budget. The date for the sale this year will be Saturday, October 1

from 10 am to 5 pm. Please plan to come and shop on that date. It is a great chance for

early Christmas shopping. Bring a friend! This is a wonderful opportunity to introduce

our church to our neighbors.

GIFT CARDS FOR SALE: The next dates for gift card sales will be June 12 and July

10. Gift cards for both Giant Eagle and Heinen’s will be available for purchase after both

services. Gift cards are also available in the church office during the week. We’ve re-

ceived over $1,800 in profits so far this year from your gift card purchases! Thank you

for your continued support of this fundraiser.

STEWARDSHIP: As the first year of Faith Giving continues, we are reminded that

Stewardship is dependent on continued prayer and consideration. Throughout 2016, it

will be your prayerful consideration and your financial support of the church that will

fund the ministry and mission of the UMC of Chagrin Falls. Thank you for all that you

do to support the important work of Jesus Christ in our community and beyond.

toothpaste and shipping, then place it in a separate envelope and send along with the kit donations.

Important Notes

All items must be new.

Do not wash any of the items as they will be considered used.

Please remove all packaging, unless otherwise specified.

All emergency kits are carefully planned to make them usable in the greatest number of situations. Since strict

rules often govern product entry into international countries, it is important that kits contain only the requested

items, nothing more.

Do not include any personal notes, money, or additional material in the kits. These things must be painstakingly

removed and will delay the shipment.

It’s Still Not TOO Late to register for VBS, to sign up to help, and/or

Donate items. Please see the bulletin board in the office lobby or contact the church office if

you’re interested.

The Bible Adventure Challenge is being offered again. We are changing things up a

participate, contact the church office. This is a program that encourages Bible

learning throughout the summer. Each child (Grade 1-Grad) is asked to complete a

task and then will receive a gift. This is paid for through our DeMarco Bible Fund.

Here’s what you have to do:

Fill out the intention sheet and return it to the church office by July 17.

Complete the task by August 28. (Grads for Scholarships by August 1)

Receive your gift on Rally Day September 11

Pick up a brochure and intention sheet!!

The

Thank you to all who taught, shepherded, and helped with our

YAC 2016 June 10-12 Youth Annual Conference is a weekend event filled with concerts, speakers, great

worship, and great fun in Lakeside, Ohio, a beautiful Chautauqua on Lake Erie. 10 of

our youth and adults will attend this great connectional weekend with other United

Methodist Youth from around Ohio. Bob will be the keynote speaker

Youth Mission Trip to Detroit

June 26-July 2

10 youth and 3 adults will be attending this year’s youth mission trip with Youth Works in Detroit, Michigan. We will focus on urban mission and work with agency to help the Detroit area. Thanks to all who donated, bought stuff at the auction, or

purchased a stock. We will end with a trip to Cedar Point.

Middle School and High School Cedar Point Weekend

July 1-2 $100/person

We will be meeting up with the high schoolers from mission trip for a two days of fun, fellowship, water, and coasters. We have booked two cabins on Cedar Point grounds. Our tickets get us unlimited access to both the waterpark and main park both days. So you can spend time in both or just one, you decide. All meals will be at the cabins. We will return late on July 2. Times to be determined once I know more about our mission trip in Detroit. Sign up by making checks payable to the church and giving to Bob by June 19. Mission trip participants are already signed up and paid. It is in your registration costs.

Thank You Jesus

I am writing you this letter Jesus

With thanksgiving in my heart

For all of the thousands of blessings

On my life you did impart

Forgiving my every infraction

Each thought that was divinely heard

Speaking to me through the Holy Spirit

Giving me peace when worries I feared

Loving me with all my frailties

No matter what I did

Saving me from me when times go tough

When I turned my back and slid.
