ITEMS OF INTEREST

We CAN make a Difference!

Dry two loads of wash one after the other to save electricity by using an already heated dryer for the second load.

SPEAKERS COMMITTEE, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 12, 7:00PM – AUDITORIUM: Mara Liasson, National Political Correspondent for NPR will speak on “2020 Politics.” If you listen to National Public Radio, you have heard her reports which are regular feature of NPR’s award-winning newsmagazine programs Morning Edition and All Things Considered. Liasson provides extensive coverage of politics and policy from Washington, DC — focusing on the White House and Congress — and reports on political trends beyond the Beltway. Ms. Liasson’s mother, Joy Liasson, is a Collington resident. Please note that this talk will begin at 7:00 rather than the usual time of 7:30. U.S. SENATOR CHRIS VAN HOLLEN AND MARYLAND ATTORNEY GENERAL BRIAN FROSH, MONDAY, JUNE 17, 10:30 AM – AUDITORIUM: Following MaCCRA's (Maryland Continuing Care Residents Association) very, very short annual meeting for election of 2019-20 officers, U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen and Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh will present a Consumer Protection Forum focusing on our rights as consumers. The forum will feature an update from Capitol Hill and the State of Maryland with a question and answer period. All are welcome. FROM THE COURTYARD COMMITTEE: This year, we are planting annuals only in pots and you may notice that some handsome new pots have been added. (We will not plant in the ground because there are serious drainage problems in the Courtyard that Collington needs to tackle before flowers and shrubs can thrive. We hope that the work

Page 9: June 3 – June 9 Key Contact Numbers MANAGER ON DUTY · Residents Association) very, very short annual meeting for election of 2019-20 officers, U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen and

will be done this summer.) Plants in pots require faithful watering. We would welcome residents’ help with this task. If you would be willing to join the watering team, please call or e-mail Anne Stone, x7282, [email protected], or Peggy Latimer, x7310, [email protected]. Also—if you have wondered why many of the Courtyard chairs are tipped toward tables, here’s the answer—it helps to ensure that the cushions shed water during downpours. It does not signify “reserved.” So if you want to enjoy the Courtyard, just put the chairs upright and sit! FROM THE OUTREACH COMMITTEE: Fantastic News from the Outreach Committee! In May the Outreach Committee presented TWO checks to Cora Rice Elementary School. The first one was $2295 to complete books for the Teachers Resource Library which is especially used by lower grades to help the students with reading comprehension. The second check was $4700 to be used to purchase over 40 Chromebook. These are small computers used to help the students and teachers with reading and math skills. Previously, the school had only 5 of these computers! All this money came from the Collington Foundation grant that we applied for last year. We hope that you understand that this is your money helping a very needy school. We became involved with this school at the suggestion of our Senator Benson and have set up the Grandparent's Reading Program. Please think about becoming involved--contact Mary Kim or Martha Pollick. REMINDER: The Hospitality Committee meeting is cancelled for Thursday, June 6. THE MYSTERY BOOK DISCUSSION CLUB found much to like-and much to criticize- in novels by Clive Cussler. Their discussion at the May 22nd meeting was lively. We will be reading novels by Elizabeth

Springtime at Collington

A Time for Celebration

Collingtonians celebrated spring in unique ways in the last few weeks. First was an ice cream social

that included exotic luau dancers! They arrived dressed in full costume. Music and commentary accompanied many traditional dances of Polynesia including the hula, the haka (from the Maori of New Zealand) and many spiritual dances. And yes, they taught our residents and staff some new moves!

At the second party, “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” Collingtonians ate delicious delectables, danced as elegantly as Ginger and Fred (well almost) to a live band and welcomed Happy, the Collington Hippo. All had a jolly good time.

Following a long tradition, the Flower Committee held a Tea this week for its members and helpers. Tea, sweets, and of course gorgeous flower arrangements were on display. Thanks to hours of technical struggle by Marilyn Haskel, the Committee was able to show a delightful video of Flower Committee members at work over the years and some of their beautiful arrangements.

And finally, another cause for celebration - the naming of our new Executive Director, Ann Gillespie. A few weeks ago, the members of the RA Council attended a stakeholder meeting with Ann. Many were impressed with her 30+ years experience in, and knowledge of, the world of CCRCs. From my perspective, even more important than her auspicious resume is her ability to communicate. Not only did I see this demonstrated during the stakeholders meeting, but also during a tour of Collington. She knows how to make a real connection with people. I am sure this will be apparent in her management style. Stay tuned for more information about her and her start date.

Lois Brown, RA President

P.S. Kudos to Kyle Olsen and Ruppert - the campus looks fabulous!
