ANNOUNCEMENTS

Instead of burying Smoky Valley and/or Soderstrom t-shirts and sweatshirts (those that your child has outgrown) in the bottom of a drawer, Soderstrom would like to collect these items. You can put them in the box north of the main entry next to the stairs going up to the sanctuary! At enrollment in August, the shirts and sweatshirts will be available for children who might not otherwise have access to Smoky Valley items! We are excited about this opportunity to serve the children in our community. Please help support this program, by donating! Thank You!

SMART Actions are: S = specific, M = measureable, A = attainable, R = realistic, and T = time framed.

Christianity's Family Tree: What Other Christians

Believe and Why Everyone is invited to join with Kelley Menke for this video-based small group study to be

held Mondays June 4th-July 23rd at 7:00 pm at Bethany Lutheran Church. Over the 8-weeks, the group will compare the Christian family to our own extended families and discuss how each denomination has a unique, valuable perspective to offer on the Christian faith. For each denomination there is a brief history, an outline of major beliefs, and a description of some things we can learn from that tradition to strengthen our own Christian faith. This is a great study for those who would like to get beyond "all churches are basically the same," as well as the common, often negative stereotypes people hold. Denominations covered in the study include: Orthodoxy, Catholicism, Lutheranism, Presbyterianism, Anglicanism, Baptists, Methodism and Pentecostalism. The class will is facilitated by Kelley Menke as an inter-denominational community outreach ministry. Fee for the course is $10, payable at the first class. Register for the class by calling the office at Trinity UMC or Bethany Lutheran Church.

The Lindsborg Senior Center is needing a driver to deliver meals to the homebound, on Wednesday and Thursdays, 12 noon to 12:30 p.m. For more information or to say yes, call Huldah 227-3983.

“The  Celebration  Ringers” Youth Hand Bell Choir from Colorado Springs will present a concert at Bethany Home on Wednes-day evening, June 6th at 6:30 pm. The concert will be in the activity center—All are welcome!

TACOL Thrift Store has the following volunteer opportunities: * a clothing sorter, Friday morning. (Some lifting and bending required.) * fill in person, to assist at the register * a person to organize clothes, racks and merchandise weekly. For more information contact Rose, 227-4710.

MINISTRY STRATEGIES FOR A VITAL CONGREGATION

Engaged in making disciples - Vital churches have more small groups for all ages. - Vital churches have more programs for children. - Vital churches have more programs for youth.

Lay Leadership - Vital churches focus on increasing the effectiveness of lay leaders (understand their role and carrying these roles out effectively). - Vital churches have lay leaders who demonstrate a vital personal faith (regular worship, intentional spiritual growth, personal devotional life, and giving of financial resources). - Vital churches place an emphasis on rotating lay leadership in order to involve more people over time. - Vital churches call, equip, use and support more lay leaders than non--‐vital  churches.    (20%  or  more  of  their  worship  attendees  describe  themselves as current or past leaders in their church).

Pastor - Vital pastors give attention to developing, coaching, and mentoring lay leadership to enable laity to increase their ability to carry out ministry. - Vital pastors use their influence to increase the participation of others in order to accomplish changes in the church. - Vital pastors motivate the congregation to set and achieve significant goals through effective leadership. - Vital pastors inspire the congregation through preaching. - Vital pastors, when they are serving effectively, stay for a longer period of time. (Short---‐term  appointments  of  effective  pastors  decrease  the   vitality of a congregation).

Worship - Vital churches offer a mix of contemporary (newer forms of worship style) and traditional services. - Vital churches have preachers who tend to use more topical sermon series in traditional services. - Vital churches use more contemporary music (less blended music that includes traditional tunes) in contemporary services. - Vital churches use more multi---‐media  in  contemporary  services

Missions - Vital churches are engaged in giving and doing mission - Vital churches are engaged in mission locally and globally

SMART Actions for TUMC to achieve these goals: 1. Hire a Christian Education Director by May 1, 2012, without af-fecting paying current bills so that we can attract new as well as

our  lives  as  Christ’s  example  to  love  one  another  as  he  loved  us. 3. Revitalize classrooms in original building by refurbishing, organizing,

replacing, updating, and adding technology for multi-purpose use by December 31, 2012, with priority given to the blue, green, yellow, and pre-K rooms so that learning is done in a safe, inspiring, and age-appropriate environment.
