What would you do if you were Mayor of Baltimore?

That’s the question that fourth graders at three Eastside elementary schools were asked to ponder in an essay contest spon-sored by Councilman Jim Kraft’s office and the CityLit Project.

There were all kinds of ideas—some self-interested—“Fix the heaters in the schools!” and some altruistic. For instance, organizing bake sales to feed the home-less, or giving teachers and janitors a raise.

“I was really impressed by the across-the-board level of awareness of certain issues,” said Gregg Wilhelm, executive

Something brewing at Haussner's?

The big ball of string is no more, and gone are the oversize paintings, the stag bar in the basement and the strawberry pie in the pastry case. But there might be din-ers back in the old Haussner’s building if Stephen Demczuk has his way.

Demczuk is founder and president of Baltimore-Washington Beer Works and is eyeing the property at the corner of Eastern Avenue and Clinton Street as a possible loca-tion for his brewery, bar and restaurant, tenta-tively called The Raven Brewery and Pub.

Demczuk already produces The Raven Special Lager, a craft beer served in vari-ous establishments around town. Right now, that beer is being produced at Clipper City Brewing Company, but demand for Clipper City is growing, and so is demand for The Raven, so Demczuk has been looking at properties around town.

And after checking out the way-too-expensive options in the county, including Towson and Timonium, Demczuk has turned his attention back to the city.

Six decades of looking at Baltimore through a camera lensLooking for a little culture? The Big Show,

which features all kinds of art from all kinds of art-ists, is open at the Creative Alliance, Eastern and East avenues, through July 23. And if you head up the stairs off the lobby to the second fl oor, you can see photos from the long and distinguished career of Thomas Carmel Scilipoti, through July 9.

Scilipoti was born and raised in Little Italy, and moved all the way to Holy Rosary Parish as a grownup. He owned and operated Thomas Stu-dio on Eastern Avenue in Fells Point for more than 30 years, from 1964 to 1996, and shot the school photographs of just about every student in every parochial school on the Eastside during that time.

He also found the time to shoot events large and small for The Baltimore Guide. Among the photos he has in his current show at the Creative Alliance are pictures of President John F. Ken-nedy speaking in Patterson Park; a man unloading a banana boat when the Inner Harbor was a work-ing port; deckhands atop the yardarms on a tall ship coming in to harbor; Orioles centerfi elder Paul Blair catching the last out of the 1966 World Series; and speaking of baseball, a shot of Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford and several other Yankees relaxing at the bar at Roma’s.

So what’s his favorite of 60 years of shooting? “I don’t know,” he says. “A lot of them. I like that tugboat on Boston Street.”

The “tugboat on Boston Street” (shown at left) is an evocative shot of a tugboat hand headed to work. Scilipoti took the picture in the 1950s some-time—he doesn’t remember exactly when. The tugboat dock was near the corner of Boston and Aliceanna streets, where the North Shore develop-ment is now.

“I took that shot with a four-by-fi ve (a large-format camera)” he laughs. “Lugging that thing around gave me arthritis in my right shoulder.”

Scilipoti is offi cially retired now—he closed Thomas Studio after suffering a heart attack in 1996—but still shooting for fun. Among the shots in the show are a picture of St. Michael’s Ukrai-nian Catholic Church at sunset, and a Snowmaged-don scene of Bank Street taken two winters ago.

“I shot that out of the front door of my house,” he says, pointing out the lacy tracery of trees bend-ing over the street under the weight of the snow. “I couldn’t get anywhere else to shoot.”

Next question:Scilipoti’s show continues at the Creative Al-

liance at the Patterson, 3134 Eastern Avenue, through July 9. All of the photos are for sale. Prices range from $75-$175, matted and framed.

Our Opinions and Yours

School secretary voices opinion

Editor, The Guide,As a front offi ce secretary at Patterson

High School, I feel that I must respond to the article published last week regarding Patterson.

The article states, according to Mr. Ron Overby, President of Bayview Business

Association, that Ms. Chris Stewart was given responsibility for the discipline at our school and because her single-handed effort, the school, in Mr. Overby’s esti-mation, was 90% better. That is a blatant error and misconception on Mr. Over-by’s part. Our principal, Ms. D’Anna, has never relinquished discipline to Ms. Stewart, who is an administrator at large at Patterson.

As part of the school’s administra-tive team, Ms. Stewart was asked by Ms. D’Anna to periodically go into the neighborhood to make sure that none of our students were loitering or bothering our neighbors in the Bayview commu-nity. It has always been a priority on Ms. D’Anna’s part to respond to the neigh-borhood complaints. She has sent our School Resource Offi cers to investigate whenever we received a compliant (we keep a log of neighbor’s calls in the of-fi ce and respond to them.) Ms. D’Anna has attended community meetings to hear and respond to neighborhood com-

plaints and she has put forth diligent ef-fort to help ensure that our students were “good neighbors” to the community. Ms. Stewart played just a small part in Ms. D’Anna’s overall community response.

As far as the data goes for Patterson; low attendance, low test scores, etc. I feel that we represent just the tip of the iceberg of data for all city schools. At-tendance is falling at other city high school, as evidenced by Dr. Grasmick

and the news media reporting that our city schools need to do something to prevent the spiral of drop outs of our students. Yes, in educating our youth, we have a long way to go, but I can tell you one thing, Patterson has had one of the largest groups of graduating seniors for years running. So, we must be doing something right.

Sincerely, Barbara Sullivan

Thanks for keeping the fl ag fl ying

Editor, The Guide:I wish to thank the editor for print-

ing my letter asking for donations of American fl ags to fl y on the walkridge over I-95 near Eastern Avenue.

I also wish to thank everyone who has donated a fl ag or fl ags to keep Old Glory in the public’s eye every time they go up or down I-95. I now have enough fl ags even if I changed them every thre months due to weather, etc., for at least two years.

I also got calls from Maine to Vir-ginia about the fl ag. The response was overwhelming which I appreciated, and will not need any more fl ags for the time being.

Thanks to everyone who has helped to keep the fl ag over I-95. It is good to know there are so many patriotic people in Baltimore.

Keeper of the fl ag.Jerry Makowiecki

Yaritza Guzman, on left, was the recipient of a four-year scholarship to Towson University, courtesy of the Ex-change Club of Highlandtown and Canton. Yaritza, who had a 4.0 average at Patterson, and is a member of the National Honor Society, will study for a B.A. in nursing, and hopes to become a surgical nurse. While at Patterson she served in the Graceland Park/O’Donnell Heights tutoring program, volunteered at Our Daily Bread, took part in the Our Lady of Pompei Pilgrimage, and volunteered for the Maryland Special Olympics. She also found time to play varsity soccer, lacrosse and volleyball at Patterson, and served an internship at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. The Exchange Club scholarship is for $1,000 a year. Exchangite Will Wilcox, right, made the presentation. Yaritza was accompanied by her mother, Agustina Guzman. The Exchange Club also honored member Kevin Koenig for his service to the club, and Baltimore Guide editor Jacqueline Watts with the Book of Golden Deeds Award for her community activism .

By Andrew Mindzak If you experienced any sort of a power

outage on Saturday night, that’s probably because all of the power was being used at Camden Yards. The Orioles faced off against the Cincinnati Reds and eventu-ally fell 10-5, but the teams combined to hit a season-high nine home runs over the course of the game, giving the robust crowd of 38,976 a game to remember.

All I can say is thank goodness Chris Berman wasn’t announcing the game and we didn’t have to listen to his annoying “backbackback” calls that he throws out for every home run like he does during the HR Derby. Let’s just say every year in my Thanksgiving prayer, I make sure to include the mute button among the things I’m thankful for. But I digress….

The game started off well for the O’s as Adam Jones started the home run derby as he took Reds’ starter Bronson Arroyo deep in the bottom of the fi rst inning. The lead would be short lived as Jonny Gomes knocked out a fat, juicy Brian Matusz pitch in the second inning, and then reigning MVP Joey Votto hit a three-run homer to put Cincy up 4-1.

Nick Markakis helped get some runs back as he hit a two-run shot in the bot-tom of the third, and then Matt Wieters jacked a solo in the fourth to tie the game at four apiece.

The score would not remain tied for long, however. Votto went yard again, as he hit a two-run shot in the top of the fi fth. Scott Rolen added another two run homer in the top of the seventh before Baltimore’s J.J. Hardy joined in on the derby with a solo shot in the seventh. Drew Stubbs hit the longest home run of the game in the eighth inning, over 430 feet to center fi eld to end the home run hitting contest.

Reds’ second baseman Brandon Phil-lips hit an RBI single to end the scoring. The power surge wasn’t quite over yet. The Reds brought in reliever Aroldis Chapman to pitch the ninth, and more fi reworks ensued. Chapman struck out Matt Wieters to open the ninth with a 101 MPH fastball. The crowd was buzzing once that reading came up on the score-board. After all, it’s not everyday

you see someone throw over 100 MPH. Chapman then got slugger Mark Reyn-olds to strike out swinging, and then with an 0-2 count on Robert Andino, gassed up another fastball at 101 MPH to end the game as Andino went down swinging.

The Orioles might have lost that game, but the took two of three from the Reds. All in all, 16 home runs were hit during this series, with the Orioles hitting nine of them. Nick Markakis extended his hit-ting streak to 16 games, stroking three hits during the Orioles win on Sunday.

Some not-so-good news is that starter

Jake Arrieta is being scratched from his scheduled start on Wednesday with a sore right elbow. That is never a good thing.

Fans, make sure you get out and vote for your O’s for the 2011 All Star Game!!

Adam Jones is having a great year, as is J.J. Hardy. And don’t forget Matt Wieters has thrown out 20 runners this year.

And also don’t forget that Justin Duch-scherer is still on the disabled list.

In the midst of a career year, Adam Jones is a credible All-Star candidate.Photo by Todd Olszewski, courtesy Baltimore Orioles

Little place, big tasteScooters has homestyle seafood to go or stay

What you notice when you walk into Scooters, the crab shack and seafood car-ryout at 1611 Bank Street, is what you don’t notice.

Scooters does not smell like fish. The only scent is the clean scent of Old Bay. That is quite an accomplishment for a sea-food carryout that specializes in steamed crabs.

Scooters is owned and operated by the same family that had Scooters in Elkridge, the restaurant, bar and banquet hall. It was popular and successful, but then the build-ing was sold out from under them.

“The place in Elkridge was sold; we didn’t own the building,” said Ruth Kaitis Lurz, daughter of the restaurant’s founder, Jimmy Kaitis. “But Dad owned the property here in Fells Point, so we did a complete build-out. We basically started over.”

The renovation was comprehensive. The front of the building has fresh stucco. There is a bright blue awning out front, and the interior is agreeably decorated with Crab House Kitsch with Billy Bob Bass plaques. There are also some Greek village scenes, Polish costume dolls, clippings and plaques and ancestral photos.

Scooters has always been famous for steamed crabs. The folks in Elkridge were devoted to them, and Mr. Jimmy takes a truck down there most weekends to sell. “We had lots of regulars in Elkridge, and they miss us,” said Ruth.

Some of them have followed Scooters to Fells Point, which Ruth finds touching.

“It’s so meaningful to see them,” she said. “And they call and say ‘we’re coming down.’”

If they don’t come up for the steamed crabs, they come for the $32.95 “Maryland Pride,” a one-pound crabcake loaf stuffed with shrimp. It’s big enough for two. For the

Junior Pride, a mere half-pound of crusta-cean delight, it’s $18.95.

We tried Captain Jimmy’s Seafood Combo, a platter of broiled flounder, scal-lops, crab balls and shrimp, for $18.95—good seafood for a great price. For variety we tried the Greek salad (large, $9.95), which was very tasty, and had stuffed grape leaves on top for a bonus, plenty of feta

BY JACQUELINE [email protected]

Scooters is nicely decked out in Crab House Kitsch.

cheese, and ripe tomatoes. The Italian cold cut sub ($5.95) was an

overstuffed roll of salami, ham, cappicola and other meats. There was no lettuce or tomato, so order those if you want them.

We didn’t get the crabs, but we know plenty of people who have tried them. Victor Corbin, president of the Fells Prospect Community Association, says “I love the crabs. They steam red potatoes and corn with the crabs and they are yummy—great with the mustard from the crabs.”

His friend Ms. Jeanne is devoted to the hamburgers, which are large, charbroiled and downright cheap ($6.50).

He also likes the red velvet cheesecake and the rice pudding.

Scooters sells steamed crabs by the dozen or by the bushel. When we visited medium males and large females were $25 a dozen.

Bottom line: if you are looking for steamed crabs, shrimp, fish, burgers or subs well-cooked from an immaculate kitchen, Scooters might be the place for you.

Scooters, 1611 Bank Street, Upper Fells Point, is open Mondays through Saturdays, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Call ahead, 410-675-6040, for market prices on crabs and pounds of steamed shrimp.

Fells Point is pretty much all about the water views; it was, after all, a port des-tination. Broadway Pier is a prime spot for gathering to watch, as is the area surrounding Living Classrooms (which, depending upon your defi nition, might be Harbor East or Fells Point), or the Ann Street pier. All that and great shopping. How can you go wrong?

Something to look forward to once the fi reworks have gone dark? Free fi lms in Fells each Wednesday. All shows start at dusk (8:45 p.m.) in July and August at the end of the Broadway Pier on a big screen in Blu-Ray. BYO lawn or beach chair, and blanket, bug spray, etc. Info:

ing special events parking. But do we really need to keep say-

ing this? Don’t bother driving. Walk or take transit. In addition to the Circulator, there’s The Water Taxi and the MTA. If you drive, you’ll have to cope with in-creased traffi c, decreased parking, lots of pedestrians and more.

FELLS POINT

neighborhoods offer

and FIREWORKSFUN

3Times were (and here we’re talking about a long time ago), you used to have

to go to Memorial Stadium to get a good view of the Fourth of July fi reworks in Baltimore. First you had a great O’s game, and then what seemed like an inter-minable period of performances by local bands. (Pity those last few performers, too; they had to put up with a rowdy crowd chanting “Fireworks! Fireworks!” until they gave up and ceded the fi eld to the pyrotechnicians).

These days, Baltimoreans can pull up a patch of sidewalk or waterfront if they want to see the fi reworks. And while there’s plenty of free entertainment to be had (the Inner Harbor’s show starts at noon), you have your choice of whether or not to attend those.

By the way, for those who want to mosey on over to the Inner Harbor, there is children’s entertainment all afternoon. At the Inner Harbor West Shore Park,

the Magic and Comedy of Jason Moffett runs at noon and 2 p.m., and the music group Milkshake plays at 1 p.m. and 1 p.m. At 4 p.m., military bands take over at the inner Harbor Amphitheatre, including the Pennsylvania Air National Guard Band and the U.S. Naval Academy’s Electric Brigade.

But who are we kidding? You really want to see fi reworks. (You’re probably chant-ing it right now, aren’t you?) Those start at 9:30 p.m. and will be backed by music.

So the question becomes this: Where are the best places to see the great pyro-technics? Well, if you have a rooftop deck, that’s always a good start. If your friend has one, that’s great too. But for plain old ground-level viewing, you can’t do much better than Harbor East, Little Italy and Fells Point. All are within walking distance of the entertainment, and all are rich with restaurants, bars and other places to grab a quick meal or a cold drink in time for the festivities.

Harbor East has some prime waterfront view-ing. The Promenade stretches all the way from around the Marriott down past the Four Seasons and in front of Spinnaker Bay. A block or so past that, it becomes Lancaster Street, which also af-fords some great fireworks views. Don’t miss the

people-watching, either. There are multiple pay parking lots at the hotels and

many businesses in Harbor East, but for those who want to take a ride without the parking hassles, there’s always the free Charm City Circulator:

*The Charm City Circulator has a stop in Harbor

East (on the Orange route) at Harbor East Circle (stop no. 224), or nearby Central Avenue (stop no. 225) or Little Italy (see information about this neighborhood, adjacent to this article). Click here to view the shuttle’s full Orange Route: http://www.charmcitycirculator.com/content/route-maps#.

Little Italy: Let’s face it: You can’t go wrong for eating, drinking or just plain wan-dering the streets. Take in a bocce match and just soak up the ambience. The foot of Albemarle Street and the area around Scar-lett Place are both great spots for catching the fi reworks show afterwards.

If you want to make a weekend of it in Little Italy, start marking your calendar for the neighborhood’s 15th annual open air movie festival on Fridays in July and August at the corner of High and Stiles streets. Live music begins at 7 p.m. and movies start at 9 p.m. Free popcorn, BYO lawn chair.

THE WINNERS:First overall: Killeanna Kangelidis, John Ruhrah Elementary/Middle SchoolSecond overall: Allen Michael Ferrare, John Ruhrah;Third overall: Monica Lemus, John Ruhrah Highlandtown Elementary/Mid-dle School #215 winner: Darius RileyHolabird Academy wnner: Ethan AyresJohn Ruhrah winner: Jayleen Vilchis

The winners’ essays are printed in their entirety on the Guide’s website (www.baltimoreguide.com); here are a few notes in the meantime:First Place Overall: Kilieanna Kange-lidis, John Ruhrah Elementary/Middle SchoolI would provide food and homes for the homeless. I would do that by building buildings and asking people to join in. I would also ask restaurants to provide

breakfast, lunch and dinner for free. This might make homeless people like there are people out there that care about them. Everyone should feel that way once in a while.Second Place Overall: Allen-Michael Ferrare, John Ruhrah Elementary/Mid-dle SchoolI would start a program to clean for peo-ple. The reason is that people are littering more so maybe I could put recycling bins everywhere. And the program people could make signs and go around Mary-land cleaning. Third Place: Monica Lemus, John Ruhrah Elementary/Middle SchoolI would help the teenagers because they just want to try everything. I would help the people that are addicted to cigarettes. I would love to change the cigarettes so they do not have nicotine. I would change them, it would be the fi rst thing I would do. John Ruhrah Elementary/Middle School: Jayleen VilchisI would help homeless people get shel-ter and some money. The shelters will be made of cement and the houses would not cost much. Highlandtown Elementary/ Middle School #215: Darius RileyIf I were mayor I would stop drugs be-cause drugs are illegal and there is a big problem here. Drugs can make you sick and cause death. I would clean the harbor because it’s so dirty you can’t eat fi sh from the har-bor. And if you swim you need to take a bath. Holabird Academy: Ethan AyresI would raise money for schools to get heaters and stop the trash problems. By making these changes, I believe we can make Baltimore a better place.

Haussner'sCONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

The building that used to hold Hauss-ner’s, he found, is an appropriate size for the new operation, but will need a com-plete overhaul. After all, it closed in late 1999, and not much has been done with the property since that time.

“It needs a new roof, a new floor in the basement, a new HVAC system,” recites Demczuk. “When it was a restaurant, the owners obviously did a very good job, but those things are old now.”

Extensive structural changes will be needed. The building will have to to have part of its main floor removed in order to accommodate the brewing equipment. And, says Demczuk, since the basement of the original building was designed to also serve as a bomb shelter, rehab isn’t going to be easy.

He and 10 partners are working through both a redesign and an effort to finance the project.

“We’re at the point now where we’re speaking to builders and architects,” he notes. “We have investors lined up.”

The partnership has been in talks with three separate banks (Carrollton, Slavie Federal and M&T), he adds, and it is hoped that a business proposal will be submitted to the bank within a month.

And while those in the neighborhood may think the building looks relatively

solid, its conversion represents a substan-tial investment for the partners involved.

“The numbers haven’t been finalized yet, but even if you eliminate the build-out which someone else is going to do, it’s going to cost at least $3 million.”

In the meantime, Demczuk is learning, Baltimore has institutional memory like an elephant. It never did forget Haussner’s. Which is good, he notes, in that “you get a lot of interest.” It’s bad too because “of course it can never be Haussner’s.”

Some of the trim on the ceiling of the building will be untouched by the con-struction, “so it’ll be a little reminiscent, but it’ll be different,” he adds.

Without a doubt, Demczuk knows how much Haussner’s means to the city. He was born in Dundalk and went to Pat-apsco High School in the 1970s, firmly grounding him in Baltimore’s traditions.

He founded Baltimore-Washington Beer Works, according to the company’s website, as a partner in Europe’s first beer-of-the-month club, Beer Around the World. In 1998, Demczuk moved his op-erations to Baltimore and began produc-tion of The Raven. The beer, naturally, had been named in honor of Edgar Allan Poe, and eventually became a fan favor-ite in places like Annabel Lee Tavern.

Demczuk says other beers to be served

at the new restaurant and bar will be named for Poe’s writings.

Despite its new digs, it’s unlikely the Raven will ever gain the profile of Bud or Coors. And as a craft beer, says Dem-czuk, it isn’t expected to. (Craft brews, sometimes known as microbrews, aren’t mass produced the way the big beers are — but they have their own appeal and their own market).

Over the years, the former restaurant has been considered for multiple proj-ects meant to revitalize the avenue — re-tail shopping, a cooking school, a steak house and more. But time and again, the rehab work needed has caused potential investors to back away.

The current proposal for the building has been presented to many of the local community associations and Demczuk says support has been widespread.

Certainly, he adds, there will be some people who won’t accept the new iden-tity of the building (this being Baltimore, after all, which has what could almost be viewed as an obsession with the past), but he is hoping the building will experience its own rebirth, as have many surround-ing neighborhoods.

“We’re really looking forward to it,” he says.

Just don’t look for strawberry pie and a stag bar.
