John the Baptist M ost of the times when we celebrate the feast of a saint, we are celebrating

it on the day that he/she died. It is because that day marked his/her entry to heaven. But there are two other saints whose birthdays, we are celebrating too. One is the Birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary on September 8 and the oth-er one is St. John the Baptist on June 24.

Today we are celebrating the Solemnity of the Birth of St. John the Baptist. He was the cousin of Jesus Christ and the son of Zechariah and St. Elizabeth. His fa-ther was a priest of the order of Abia whose job in the temple was to burn in-cense. St. Elizabeth was a descendent of Aaron. When Zechariah was minister-ing in the Temple, an angel brought him news that Elizabeth would bear a child filled with the Holy Spirit from the moment of his birth. Zechariah doubted and was struck dumb until John’s birth. I invite you to reflect on two things: First, John the Baptist was a prophet. When we hear the term “prophet,” not a few think that he is someone who foretells the future, like the fortune teller. The truth is that the prophet’s chief role is not to foretell but to proclaim the message of God at all times, to all people whether they like to hear it or not. The prophet is the conscience of the people. He afflicts the comfortable and comforts the afflicted. That is why St. John the Baptist did-n’t mince words. He lambasted the self-righteous Pharisees and Sadducees: “Brood of vipers, who warned you to fly from the retribution that is coming!” To the abusive soldiers, he fulminated, “Stop oppressing the people.” What does the name John mean? It means, “Yahweh has shown favor,” or “God is gracious, merciful.”

Second, discover the meaning of your name. If you don’t know yet the meaning of your name, try to discover it. There must be a reason why you were name as such. If you are named after a saint, read more about his/her life’s story. This saint can be our guide and inspiration as we live our Christian life and our voca-tion to holiness because our God is holy. If you are not named after a saint, try to find a saint whose feast coincides with your birthday and make him/her as your patron saint. Or if you could not find any, chose a saint which you like most and make this saint as your patron saint too.

Wakacyjny wypoczynek

W ielu z nas w najbliższej perspektywie widzi wspaniały, długo oczekiwany czas wakacji. W swych marzeniach jedni widzą złocisty piasek, wezbrany

falami ocean, białą plamę skrzydeł mewy. Inni oczekują spotkania z niebosiężnymi szczytami. Jeszcze inni pragną po prostu chwil wypoczynku, wyswobodzenia się z niewoli “dwóch wskazówek”, zrzucenia pęt absolutnej dyspozycyjności. To dobrze, że takie marzenia powstają, odpoczynek bowiem to nie tylko przyjemność lub luksus, na który mogą sobie pozwolić wybrani. Odpoczynek to niejako obowiązek, konieczność, bez spełnienia której człowiek nie potrafi w pełni cieszyć się swym życiem, które jest darem do samego Boga. W tym ludzie podobni są do ptaków, mogą wzbić się w przestworza życia na dwóch skrzydłach; pracy i odpoczynku. Jeśli któreś z nich jest zbyt małe, lot nigdy nie stanie się wysoki. Odpoczynek zatem powinien towarzyszyć pracy. Dobry zapewnia siły potrzebne przy wykonywaniu zadań, stawianych przez potrzeby dnia codziennego. Co znaczą jednak hasła: dobry odpoczynek, dobrze wykorzystane wakacje. Przecież wypoczywanie to jedna z najprostszych czynności, jakie człowiek potrafi wykonać. Nie możemy wypoczynku utożsamiać z bezczynnością zarówno fizyczną, duchową, czy też umysłową. Wakacje to czas dany nam, abyśmy, nieskrępowani brakiem czasu i mnóstwem niekończących się obowiązków, próbowali odnowić spojrzenie na swoje życie, pogłębić więź z Bogiem i bliźnimi, nacieszyć się darem istnienia i otaczającym nas światem. A Pan Bóg czeka. W niedzielnej Eucharystii, ale i codziennej Mszy św. na którą w wakacje da się znaleźć czas. W częstej modlitwie, już nie na czas, rozmowie z Nim rano gdy nie trzeba biec do pracy, wieczorem, gdy nie pada się z nóg ze zmęczenia. W swoich dziełach które sam stworzył i ofiarował człowiekowi. Z ich piękna i potęgi poznaje się właśnie Jego. W drugim człowieku oczekującym na mądrą radę, odrobinę czasu, którego przecież wskazówki teraz tak bezwzględnie nie wymierzają. Bez Boga nic nie jesteśmy w stanie uczynić. Czasami tylko się nam wydaje, że bez nas świat się zawali. Odrzucając Boga, odrzuca się miłość a wtedy pozostaje pustka. I trzeba zastanowić się nad tym jaki sens ma odpoczynek z telewizyjnym bezładem, czasem rozmowy z Bogiem obliczonym co do sekundy, zamknięciu się w świecie leżaka i olejku do opalania, skoro po tym czasie tak „beztroskim” i „cudownym” w sercu pozostaje pustka, która odezwie się w ciężkich, wymagających pracy chwilach. I nie będzie wtedy siły drugiego skrzydła.

Godzina Święta we wtorki – 7PM

S aludos mis hermanos y hermanas de la comunidad de San José Obrero.

El pasado fin de semana, tanto en el boletín de la parroquia como en la homilía, hablé acerca de la importancia de ser ejemplos para los demás. Pero no cualquier tipo de ejemplo, sino de ser buenos cristianos que puedan ins-pirar a aquellos que viven con nosotros, espe-cialmente a nuestros hijos.

El día de hoy estamos celebrando la fiesta de la natividad de San Juan Bautista y las lecturas, aunque no específicamente nos hablan de ser ejemplos, si las analizamos a profundidad, podemos ver que el mensaje de ser ejemplo no desaparece. Porque todos somos llamados por nuestro Dios de Amor a ir hacia Él, y que cuando conozcamos su amor vayamos también hacia nuestros hermanos y les prediquemos acerca de Él, no solamente con palabras, sino también con nuestra misma forma de vivir.

Cuando tenía 16 años, asistí a mi primer retiro juvenil. En ese retiro un joven líder me pidió que meditara las escrituras, pero que lo hiciera de una forma como si todo fuera para mí. Justo uno de los pasajes bíblicos que yo tenía que meditar era este:

“Es poco que seas mi siervo…; te voy a convertir en luz de las naciones,

para que mi salvación llegue hasta los últimos rincones de la tierra” (Isaías 49:6).

Como ya lo había expresado hace dos semanas en el boletín, yo ya traía inquietudes vocacionales hacia el sacerdocio, pero no lo quería expresar. Este pasaje bíblico hacia que mi corazón latiera de una forma más acelerada y muchas de las veces sentía deseo de hablar y gritar al mundo de que yo quería seguir a Cristo, de que yo quería estar con Él, de que yo le quería decir: “Sí aquí estoy!”.

Dios me ha dado la vocación al sacerdocio. Pero Él también te está llamando a ti, te llames como te llames, vengas de donde vengas. Desde antes de formarte en el vientre de tu madre, Dios ya tenía asignado para ti un llamado. El te hace la invitación a estar con Él. Y lo hace porque te quiere, te ama, y quiere ayudarte a experimentar su amor incondicional.

EL RINCON DEL PADRE CHUY

Ahhh pero eso no debe quedar nada más ahí. El amor de Dios nos impulsa a ir al en-cuentro de nuestros hermanos y hermanas. Nos impulsa a llevar luz a aquellas perso-nas que viven en la obscuridad. Nos invita a amar a nuestros hermanos, así como Él también nos ama.

“Te voy a convertir en luz para las naciones”. Eso es lo que nos dice Dios a todos noso-tros. Todos estamos llamados a ser luz para los demás. Debemos ser luz para nuestros hijos, esposas, esposos, hermanos, hermanas, amigos, etc, etc. etc. Debemos ser luz que brinde calor a corazones sumidos en lo frio de la indiferencia, luz que brinde espe-ranza en medio de tanto desaliento, luz que guie a todos nuestro seres queridos, y a to-do el mundo a un encuentro personal con cristo.

Pero para ser luz debemos encontrar siempre nuestra fuente de energía, y esa fuente es nuestro Dios. Es por eso que todos debemos darnos tiempo para la oración perso-nal, para la meditación de las Sagradas Escrituras, para asistir a la celebración Euca-rística y sobre todo para compartir esa luz con nuestros hermanos.

Pero no se trata solo de hablar, se trata de actuar. Hay que hacerlo de verdad y en realidad. El mundo necesita ver ejemplos cristianos. Nuestros hijos necesitan ver que ustedes, sus papás, son buenos guías, buenos ejemplos y buenas luces que los puedan llevar hacia el Dios que les promete dar el amor y la paz que sus almas necesitan.

Que el día de hoy escuches la voz de Dios que te llama por tu nombre y te invita a ser luz para un mundo sediento de paz y amor. En el Verbo Divino: Rev. Jesus Mata, SVD

Last week we discussed the meaning and origin of Sacred Tradition and how it supplements and helps explain Sacred Scripture. This week we will look at some examples of Sacred Tradition to get a better understanding of its sources and how it is different but not contradictory to Sacred Scripture. Here are some great bible verses which help to explain Sacred Tradition: 1 Corinthians 11:2: I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I have delivered them to you" 2 Thessalonians 2:15: So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter. 2 Thessalonians 3:6: Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is living in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us. There are some examples of Sacred Tradition in the Bible that are interesting. For instance, in Acts 20:35, Paul says the following: "In all things I have shown you that by so toiling one must help the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, `It is more blessed to give than to receive.'" These words are not recorded anywhere else in the Bible, including the 4 Gospels, so this is one example of an oral teaching of Jesus being handed on to Paul, who hands it down to us. Matthew 2:23: And he went and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, "He shall be called a Nazarene." (This "he shall be called a Nazarene" prophecy is not in written scripture anywhere). Matthew 23:2: Jesus says, "The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat;" (Moses' seat is not mentioned anywhere in written scripture). 1 Corinthians 10:4: "and all drank the same supernatural drink. For they drank from the supernatural Rock which followed them, and the Rock was Christ." (Nowhere in the Old Testament does it say that a rock "followed" the Israelites in the desert.) 2 Timothy 3:8: "As Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men of corrupt mind and counterfeit faith; " (These 2 individuals who opposed Moses are not actually written about in the Old Testament). JOHN THE BAPTIST Since June 24 falls on a Sunday this year, the Church has the opportunity for a more intense celebration of the birth of John the Baptist, who is often described as the last of the Old Tes-tament prophets and the bridge between Judaism and Christi-anity. More commonly, John is known as the “precursor” of our Lord Jesus Christ. All the Gospels report John’s basic message: Repent, the kingdom is near at hand. One greater than I is coming. Though he was a wandering preacher who dressed in camel skins and ate grasshop-pers, John’s legacy is one of true royalty. His origins are similar to those foretold by God through the prophet Isaiah: “You are my servant, he said to me, Israel through whom I show my glory” (Isaiah 49:3). John’s humility—“I am not he”—was surpassed only by that of his Lord Jesus, the humble servant who followed. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It’s midsummer day! We have the advantage of celebrating one of the great hidden treasures of our liturgical calendar on a Sunday this year. There are only three “nativity” feasts on our calendar: for the Lord, the Blessed Mother (September 8), and today’s birth of the Baptist. Today’s date is anchored by the Annunciation (March 25), when Mary learns not only of her own child’s advent, but of Elizabeth’s child. We are exactly half a year away from Christmas Eve. There are strong traditions around this feast. Just as the winter solstice provides a rich vocabulary for Christmas, so does the abundance of light at midsummer inform this celebration. Just as at Christmas, a religious festival spills over into culture. As summer light reaches its peak, the sun-drenched zones of northern Europe see people staying up all night, lighting “St. John’s fires” in the long summer twilight. Bonfires seem to be the unifying force in all these celebrations, kindled along the shores of the St. Lawrence in Quebec and Mon-treal, with harbor illuminations in France. You may be most interested in the custom in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Baptist’s own city. People there will leap into the sea between midnight and dawn to honor John.
