Today we celebrate the birth of St. John the Baptist. This prophet, who prac-ticed austerity in the desert, proclaimed the kingdom of God, a coming judg-ment, and baptism as a sign of repentance. With deep humility, John directed attention not to himself but to Jesus. John’s attitude was, “He must increase, I must decrease” (John 3:30). John’s birth, days after the summer solstice when daylight hours begin to decrease, contrasts with Jesus’ birth days after the winter solstice, heralding daylight’s increase. Like John the Baptist, stewards turn attention away from themselves and towards Jesus. The stewardship question for us is whether or not we ourselves are prepared to “decrease” and allow Jesus to “increase” in our hearts, minds, words and actions.

Morning prayer Beginning the week of July 9th, we will no longer have weekday Mass in our cluster as our new sacramental priest, Fr. Jim Brokman, will be con-tinuing his duties as chaplain at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. Thus, he will generally not be available during the week.* This is not a new situa-tion for us, as a similar arrangement was in place when Fr. Ambrosy served as the sacramental priest for our cluster. Archbishop Jackels is very supportive of parishioners across the Archdiocese to continue to gather for prayer as fewer and fewer priests are available to offer Mass in parishes during the week. I have had a chance to visit with many of those who attend Mass on Tuesday in Vinton and on Wednesday in Urbana; and I hope to visit with those who attend Mass on Thursday in Walker this week to talk about the options we have going forward. Those options include: Liturgy of the hours/Liturgy of the Word, adora-tion or other devotions such as praying the rosary or the Divine Mercy chaplet. Word and communion services are not authorized. I am asking those who regularly take part in our weekday Masses for input as to what option(s) they would like to pursue going forward. I’m also looking to them to provide leadership in leading the prayer as I will be taking on more responsibili-ties, particularly in the area of visiting the homebound. Times of change and transition can stir up all kinds of feelings inside of us. Some may feel a sense of loss, wanting things to remain as they have been. It is under-standable. Yet, the paschal mystery invites us not to stay there. Instead let us look forward with trust and embrace where God is leading us! Let us also pray for vocations as well as for the priests who are so faithfully serving us. -Marcia, PLC *Fr. Jim will be available to preside at funeral Masses in our cluster. Arrangements are being put in place for priests to be on call to cover for Fr. Jim at the hospital when there is a funeral in our cluster.

Feeding Lunches to Youth (FLY) Summer Lunch Program for CPU students & families
FLY serves sack lunches Mon. thru Fri. from June 4 - Aug. 22. Lunches are prepared and delivered each day by volunteers from the community. The lunches will be served from noon - 12:30pm at the following sites: CP Public Library (parking lot across the street) and the Urbana Legion Hall (Pavilion). The main mission is to serve lunch to children. Adults who request a lunch may be served at 12:25pm if any lunches remain. Pastoral Council Seeks Your Input - The organ at St. Mary Urbana is in need of repair. We’ve been researching the problem for some time. It can be fixed, but at a cost of $1500. The only people who have recently played the organ for an occasional wedding or funeral, are Ruth Dolan (SH) and Deb Schemmel (SMV). The council wishes to know if there are any parishioners from Urbana who can and are willing to play the organ and/or if anyone would wish to purchase it. Humanae Vitae 50th Anniversary Celebration Join in celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the release of Pope Paul VI’s en-cyclical Humanae Vitae, which expresses the beautiful teachings of the Church regarding human sexuality and family planning. The celebration will take place on Sunday, July 22 from 5:00-7:30 pm at St. Pius X in Cedar Rapids and will include a catered dinner.
Dr. Janet E. Smith will deliver the keynote address entitled “The Message of Humanae Vitae 50 Years Later.” Dr. Smith is the author of Humanae Vitae: A Generation Later and the editor of Why Humanae Vitae Was Right: A Reader, among many other published writings on topics related to sexuality and bioethics. More than two million copies of her talk “Contraception: Why Not?” have been distrib-

Did you know? Vinton Area Ministerial Association (VAMA) VAMA uses funds collected from ecumenical services to provide emergency food, gas, and shelter to persons in need. Each year, the VAMA funding is limited to the amounts collected through direct donations from churches and ecumenical services. Each year, this amount ranges from $2,000 - $3,000. This averages out to less than $300 per month in aid that we are able to provide. As such, the outreach we do for those seeking direct emergency aid is limited to food assistance of $25 per household and gas assistance of $20 per household. Each household may re-ceive assistance up to two times (2x) per calendar year. We are acutely aware as an association that this barely covers the surface of the need experienced by some individuals. Consequently, we try to put peo-ple in touch with others service organizations that can provide more sub-stantial help. This includes providing lists of food programs and agencies in the area, information on agencies that provide rides for medical transporta-tion, putting people in touch with emergency shelter programs, and more.
