As announced on the weekend of June 8-9, Bishop Muench has assigned Deacon Chauvin Wilkinson to St. Aloysius Parish. A resident of Port Allen and a parish-ioner of St. Joseph Cathedral, Deacon Chauvin was ordained by Bishop Muench on Saturday, June 8, together with his seven classmates, including our parishioner David Dawson. He will start his ministry at St. Aloysius’ on July 1, the same day as Father Peter. As we welcome Fr. Peter and Deacon Chauvin, we also say goodbye to Fr. Al as he moves to St. Joseph Church in Pierre Part. I’ll miss the good roommate that Fr. Al has been at the rectory; the parents and children attending St. Aloysius School will miss his presence at carpool lines; the dispatchers at the alarm company who know Fr. Al by name will miss him and won’t know what to do now that the alarm at the rectory won’t go off as often! Thank you, Fr. Al, for spending this past year with us, being present to us with your kind smile, and not hesitating to lend a hand to help with whatever was needed. We’ll miss you! Please plan to attend the farewell reception for Fr. Al after the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, June 30. In case you can’t make it to the reception, Fr. Al plans to be at all the Masses that Sunday to say goodbye. Friday, June 7 was the first annual outing for altar servers who were invited to All Star Lanes for an evening of bowling, pizza, and fellowship. About 25 servers came and had such a great time that they’d already planned next summer’s outing! I’m grateful to Tania Gudiel and Janelle Johnson who work with the servers and who organized all the social events for them. I also thank the parents who encourage and support their children to serve in this ministry and some of whom also serve as chaperones for the social events. This issue of the bulletin focuses on St. Aloysius Day celebrations after the 4:30 p.m. Mass on Saturday, June 22. I look forward to seeing you there! The celebrations were so successful last year because so many stepped up to help. We sent out an email blast last week, asking for help for this year: setting up, decorat-ing, serving, etc. If you’re able to help, please contact us at [email protected]. The more people there are to help, the more quickly the work gets done. We’re counting on you! We also need help with the pictorial directory project. As with St. Aloysius Day celebrations, this doesn’t require a long-term commitment. Even a few hours will do! Please contact Kristen Spring ([email protected]) or Diane Odom ([email protected]) and let them know you’d be more than happy to lend a hand! I was supposed to be in San Diego for a meeting on June 10; however, with my sister’s condition, I canceled the meeting. I appreciate Fr. Al’s generosity in cover-ing the Masses that weekend so that I could spend some time with my sister. I left after the ordination Mass on Saturday, June 8, and was with my sister until the after-noon of Sunday, the 9th. Being there helped me appreciate the difficult and demand-ing work of a caregiver. I’ve of course continued to pray for my sister but also for my nephew who is her primary caregiver. He’s truly a saint for having made so many sacrifices to be available to her. I’m touched by the prayers, offers to help, and words of encouragement from so many of you. Thank you!

St. Aloysius Gonzaga Feast Day-June 21

June 23 & 30, 2013 4 12th & 13th Sunday in OT/St. Aloysius Feast Day Celebration

Born in the Castle of Castiglione, Italy March 9, 1568.

At 8 years of age, Aloysius was placed in the Court of Francesco de'Medici in Florence, Italy.

At 10 years of age, he travelled to Mantua, Italy.

At Brescia when he was 12 he received spiritual guidance from St. Charles Borromeo. Here he received his First Holy Communion.

At 13 he went to Spain with his father, Ferrante, Marquis of Castig-lione. Here he was made a page of James, son of Philip II. It was in the service of this court that Aloysius formed the resolution of be-coming a Jesuit.

On November 25, 1585 Aloysius joined the Jesuit Novitiate.

On November 25, 1587 Aloysius took his first vows. He was in-structed in the study of philosophy and had Saint Robert Bellarmine as his spiritual adviser.

In 1591 during his fourth year of Theology in Rome, a plague broke out in Italy. The Jesuits set up a hospital where Aloysius nursed pa-tients. As he washed the sick and made their beds, Aloysius caught the disease himself. A fever persisted after his recovery and for three months he remained in a weakened state. He continued a devout dis-cipline of prayer and penance.

St. Aloysius died in Rome on June 21, 1591. He was only 23 years old.

Beatified by Gregory XV in 1621.

Canonized by Benedict XIII in 1726.

The remains of St. Aloysius Gonzaga are buried in the Church of St. Ignatio in Rome, The Gesu Church.

Founder of the Jesuits ~ ~ ~ Patron Saint of Retreatants

The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius

*The Principle and Foundation

We are created to praise, glorify and serve God, and by this means to achieve our eternal destiny. Trust God as if eve-rything depended on you, and at the same time work as if everything depended on God.

* Finding God in all things

The Mystery that is God is beyond doctrine, tradition and Scripture. Yet our understanding of God is sacramental - God among us in the faces, the words and gestures that make present the reality of grace. God is intimately with us.

* Walking with Christ

The Life of Jesus Christ is entered into deeply. We use our imaginations to place ourselves in the scenes of the Gos-pels. Remembering the stories of Jesus and also taking part in these stories as an intimate friend and companion."Who do you say that I am?" asks Jesus. Ultimately we must answer the call to "Come, follow me.”

*The Experiencing of Consolation and Desolation

Our lives are a journey complete with highs and lows. St. Ignatius gives us a road map for discernment of spirits to help us understand these life experiences. Ignatius reminds us that God loves us deeply, but also moves us to growth even through suffering. Our faith at times requires us to confront reality and to trust God even when God is hard to understand. We are loved during times of failure and loss.

*Learning to Love Like God

To love others the way God loves us is the important final element in Ignatian Spirituality. By embracing our faith and by knowing we are loved we can bring Christ to others and make a difference in this world. This call to follow Christ is displayed in our care and concern for those around us, even those that have been left out in society.

“A history of a soul's journey from spiritual childhood to spiritual adulthood”

“A way of re-energizing your spiritual life”

"A model of cooperation with grace which results in the Greater Glory of God"

June 23 & 30, 2013 7 12th & 13th Sunday in OT/St. Aloysius Feast Day Celebration

“There is no more evident sign that anyone is a saint and of the number of the elect, than to see him leading a good life and at the same time a prey to desolation, suffering, and trials."

Ministry Highlights Adult Core Team

By: Jeanne Peneguy

BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO HAVE DIED IN THE LORD

Billie Dicharry Grandmother of Dr. Geoffrey Peters

Not many people know that the Adult Core Team (ACT) is one of the driving forces behind the youth group at St. Aloysius. This team is made up of adult volunteers with a common goal: Bring our teenagers closer to God.

St. Aloysius is blessed to have one of the largest and most active youth groups in the area. It is what draws many teenagers out to a Sunday evening Life Night, a service project, a summer softball game or a weekend retreat or summer trip.

The ACT is made up of adults of all ages serving several different roles. One primary task is serving on teams with the members of the Youth Leadership Team, helping the teens facilitate and plan their youth group meetings. Other roles include coaching the summer softball team, prepar-ing food for meetings, facilitating the Fall Retreat, and chaperoning trips.

There is something for everyone, and the only requirement is to have a passion inside your heart to help our youth grow closer to God and build their faith and relationships with Jesus.

My first experience with the Adult Core Team was a few years ago when I coached my first softball practice. By the end of the night, I knew this was a group I would stay with for some time. Those teens have since graduated, but new teenagers keep it going every year. I have since helped at Fall Retreat, Diocesan Youth Conference, the Disney World trip, and countless Life Nights.

While I would like to say the best thing I have experienced has been helping the teens, I can also say that my faith and relationship with God has grown more than I realized it could. I also cherish the relationships I have formed with the youth in our parish and the other ACT members. My friendships with the ACT members are some of the strong-est I have, rooted in a love of God.

We invite you to contact our youth minister, MacDougall Womack, if you have a passion for bringing our youth closer in their relationship with God. He can be reached at the parish office at 343-6657 ext. 3027 or email him at [email protected].
