Prayer for Hurricane Season
O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices
of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order
and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of
land and sea. We live the shadow of a danger over which we
have no control: the gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can
awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. Dur-
ing this hurricane season we turn to you, loving Father. Spare
us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and
whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time.
O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to
plead with you Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calam-
ities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of grat-
itude, we will walk in the footsteps of your divine Son to reach
heavenly Jerusalem where a stormless eternity awaits us.
Amen.

From the Pastor’s Desk
Years ago, before smokers had been banished to the sidewalks and alleyways, I heard someone make an absolutely brilliant argument against allowing indoor smoking.. After laying out a set of new rules for indoor abstinence, he asked the following question: “Do you really want to breathe air that someone else has been breathing?” A collective and spontaneous ‘Yuch!’ was uttered by all in attendance, and everyone departed grate-ful for being spared such a disgusting fate.
Now, this was a smart man, and I am convinced he knew exactly what he was doing. In the context of smoking, and seeing people’s breath being expelled from their lungs, he knew what response he would get. What no one even thought about was that smoke or no smoke, we are constantly breathing air that someone else has been breathing. Always, everywhere, and don’t even think about the shared air in that elevator. Now, stop hold-ing your breath. You have to breathe.
The point is that we share almost everything, and the whole idea of private air, private space, private wa-ter, land & rain is ludicrous. And that fact goes against the grain for all of us American individualists who lean toward self-reliance and self-determination. It reminds us that we are all in this together.
Last weekend, the city-parish of Lafayette held a collection day for certain kinds of waste chemicals. Now, why do that? I have my own property, and my own ditch on that property. Why can’t I just pour that extra paint into the ditch, and be done with it? Of course we all know the answer. Under my property there is a water table, which we all share. And that ditch flows into a gully which flows into a canal which flows into a river, which I do not own, and which we all share. Likewise, if I have some old tires, why can’t I just burn them in the back yard on my own property, as the noxious smoke drifts into the sky, (our sky, our air). If I buy a plot of land on the river and build a factory, why can’t I just discharge anything and everything flammable and poisonous into my piece of the river? Why can’t I shoot as many bald eagles as I can find, hunt alligators into extinction, and cut down all the cypress while prices are high?
I know I’ve said it before, but I continue to see selfishness, and the exaltation of the individual over and above the community, as the root sin of our culture. We want to run our homes, our cars, our businesses and our wars as we see fit, without regard for anyone else living today or tomorrow or in the next century.
But it’s not just mine. It’s ours. And theirs. That’s why the environment is a moral issue.
