Breaking Out With a POP

Students and their families had a chance to try a breakout box at this year’s Fine Arts Night.  A breakout box is like a reverse escape room; instead of trying to get out of a room, you are trying to get into a box.  The theme of this breakout was Pop Art and using visual clues and artwork families tried to solve three different locks, a 3 digit‐number lock, a word lock and a directional lock.  Students are using breakout boxes in the classroom as review for content area, additional skill practice, as well as working on problem solving and collaboration skills.  Here are some of the groups that managed to “break out.”

Good luck to all our athletes in the City Finals!

Drama Production

St. John XXIII held its first ever JH musical on May 30th! Junior high students performed in a production called the "The Big Bad Musical". The official performance took place on the evening of the 30th, and there were also two dress rehearsals during the day so that students could watch the production.

PLAY SYNOPSIS

A courtroom has never been more lively and fun than in The Big Bad Musical!  The jury — the audience — must decide the outcome of the biggest trial ever in the fairy‐tale world!  The notorious Big Bad Wolf is being slapped with a class‐action lawsuit by storybooks of quirky characters who want to get even:  Little Red Riding Hood, her Grandmother, the Three Little Pigs and the Shepherd in charge of the Boy Who Cried Wolf.  With a news reporter as the commentator on live Court TV, the greatest legal minds in the Enchanted Forest — the Evil Stepmothers and the Fairy Godparents — clash in a trial that will be remembered forever after.

Appropriate Student Dress Reminder

Our Students and staff are expected to maintain a responsible, appropriate, and modest standard of dress throughout the school year. Families are asked to use good judgment regarding printed slogans and style of dress. As a matter of respect, student hats are not to be worn in the building.   As the weather becomes warmer, we would like to pass on a friendly reminder for students to dress appropriately and in a responsible fashion.         Inappropriate attire includes:

Unhemmed cut‐off shorts, short shorts, mini‐skirts, or dresses that are above mid‐thigh.

Halter tops, spaghetti strap tops, beachwear tops or tops that insufficiently cover the upper‐body or undergarments.

Bare midriffs (shirts should be long enough to be tucked in or should cover the waistband of pants or skirts), clothing with plunging necklines or backless clothing.

T‐shirts or articles of clothing with inappropriate slogans.  We ask that parents assist their children in making clothing choices that are appropriate for the school learning environment.

Playground News Our community playground is coming soon to St. John XXIII.  An interactive playground is being constructed at this moment. The school predicts the park will be finished in the near future. The construction workers resumed working after the winter season. The ground preparation and foundation of the park has been built by Grasshoppers Construction and the equipment was supplied by Burke Equipment.  The park is built for the community, St. John XXlll students, and Constable Daniel Woodall students who haven’t had a park for three years and are so excited to finally get one. The construction started last summer but permits and drainage pipes delayed the process.  The eco‐friendly city building planner assigned to the park development decided to make the sub‐floor foundation out of old recycled tires creating a soft rubber ground. The rest of the park floor will be covered in wood chips.  The grounds look amazing already, so stop by and check out how the new playground is coming together! There is something for everyone! The students can’t wait to play on our new park! Written by: Eden O. Grade 5

TIPS FOR TEST TAKING

THE NIGHT BEFORE…

Obviously, review what you have already learned.  Do not get on the phone just before bed and discuss the exam with a classmate.  Stop review and all studying 30 minutes before bed, take a hot bath/shower and watch

something on TV, listen to relaxing music or read a novel.  Get everything you need the next day ready the night before to prevent panic in the AM.  Be aware of your trigger – plan activities and arrival at the exam with these things in mind.  If necessary, practice catching negative thoughts and turning them around (eg. “I’m going

to fail this exam”   “I am well prepared and will do my best!”)  In bed, practice box breathing.  Single most beneficial thing you can do   get some sleep (increases memory capacity).

SHORTLY BEFORE…

Practice box breathing.  If your exam is in the morning, DO NOT EVER (NO MATTER HOW DESPERATE) cram just

before the exam.  If your exam is in the afternoon, you may do a brief review first thing in the morning, and

then LEAVE YOUR NOTES ALONE.  Quit morning review within 2.5 to 3 hours of the exam.  Avoid like the plague anxious classmates or being a helpful listener to someone who is

freaking out.  Anxiety can be contagious.  Do YOU really want to be a sympathetic friend more than you want to do well on the test?

DURING…

Always do the easy questions first and the ones you are confident in.  Check your body – box breathing halfway through if necessary.  Only change answers if you are absolutely sure of yourself (eg. Read the question wrong)  Force yourself to slow down if you feel careless or are rushing.  Avoid looking around the room and making assumptions about how others are doing.

AFTER…

Do something nice for yourself as a reward for doing your best.  Do not discuss the exam questions in detail afterwards – what’s done is done!  Wait to get

the paper back and focus on finding answers for any errors.  Learn and move on.  If you don’t do as well as hoped, remember – EXAMS DO NOT DEFINE WHO YOU ARE OR

WHAT YOU WILL BE.

Message from Archbishop Smith

Dear Friends,   In the season of Easter our hearts turn to reflect on Christ’s death and resurrection. “He was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:4).   The students who attend our Catholic schools can help us understand the resurrected life of Jesus more deeply. Pope Francis assures us that Christ, who “wants to make us sharers in the new life of the resurrection,” is “the true youthfulness of a world grown old” (Christus Vivit, 32). When I look at the exuberance and joy of these young people, I am reminded of the heart of our risen Saviour.   Of course, there is real pain, too, in the lives of young people in our schools. They know the brokenness of this world. They’ve experienced emotional depths like those familiar to the prophets of old: “Therefore I said: Look away from me, let me weep bitter tears; do not try to comfort me for the destruction of my beloved people” (Isaiah 22:4). In their own way, they have a connection with the unutterable sorrows of our Lord who suffered betrayal.   Young people, I realize you are no strangers to the darkness and desolations of Good Friday, or the grief and shock of Holy Saturday. I hear you. My heart goes out to you.   Never forget that Easter Sunday comes after Holy Saturday. As Catholics, our faith gives us a hope that reaches beyond death, beyond despair and confusion. The Holy Gospels tell of an empty tomb, of rejoicing angels, and the Risen Lord.   I have observed that many young people have a remarkable openness to the message of Easter. You are moved by the promise of a resurrection that can defeat every shadow of death. As we enter these summer months, then, let me invite you to keep following Christ into the light of the resurrection, the love of God, and the hope of everlasting life.   And to all the staff, students and parents of Edmonton Catholic School District: I pray that God will continue to bless each one of you, all the days of your life.   Richard W. Smith  Archbishop of Edmonton

Message from Superintendent Joan Carr

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone.

1 Corinthians 12: 4-6

The culminating act of our students’ time with us is their graduation, and like any family, we are extremely proud of all our students for their success. As this scripture passage shares, we celebrate that each of our students has received a variety of gifts through the Spirit. We are honored that, through their journey of Catholic education with us, we have been able to provide a Christ-centred environment for their learning and growth; a place where God has activated those gifts as part of a beautiful community.

Student success is at the heart of all that we do. In an effort to add an extra layer of support to our high school students who are writing diploma exams, we are offering Diploma Exam Prep courses once again this year. Visit our School of Alternative Education website, www.sae.ecsd.net, to view the complete schedule of prep sessions and to find registration information. You will also find our summer school offerings there. Pentecost Sunday falls on June 9 this year, and it provides a wonderful opportunity for us to reflect on the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Pope Francis shares, “It is the Spirit who is the protagonist of Christian life, the Holy Spirit, who is with us, accompanies us, transforms us, is victorious with us” (May 18, 2019). June offers us the occasion to celebrate all those who fill the role of father in our lives by offering our thanks for their love, wisdom, and support.

Strength of a Mountain God took the strength of a mountain, The majesty of a tree, The warmth of a summer sun, The calm of a quiet sea, The generous soul of nature, The comforting arm of night, The wisdom of the ages, The power of the eagle's flight, The joy of a morning in spring, The faith of a mustard seed, The patience of eternity, The depth of a family need, Then God combined these qualities, When there was nothing more to add, He knew His masterpiece was complete, And so, He called it ... Dad - Author Unknown (www.xavier.edu ) Have a wonderful June! Sincerely, Joan Carr
