Year 10-12 students in separate groups were given the opportunity to participate in 2 “Try-a-Trade” practical sessions where they interacted directly with members of the industry. Trades on offer included health, hospitality, business, finance, education,

tourism, photography, art, design, retail, automotive, construction, social work and many more.Students commented:“I had a basic idea on what pathway I wanted to follow when I finished school. Speaking to all the different industries and stall providers has helped plan my future.”“Try-A-Trade is a great concept. I had a few pathways which I was interested in and now that I have had a little bit of hands on experience, I know which pathway I want to follow.”Edward John Eyre High School would like to say a big thank you to the 20+ stall holders that attended the Career Expo, and thank you to TAFESA and UniSA for delivering the 18 different Try-A-Trade sessions for students on the day.

FROM THE PRINCIPALEdward John Eyre High School continues to be very busy for staff and students this term. We have already held events such as our Career Expo and Try a Trade Day, VET week blocks, Reconciliation Week, WASP camp and numerous sporting teams competing in knockout sport. In addition to this our House Teams have been running fundraisers for their charity and our sport students have been running numerous coaching sessions in our local primary schools. This term has seen some substantial staffing changes. We farewelled Kemal Brkic who has returned to Victoria and welcomed Chris Webber to our school as his replacement for the remainder of the year. Our leadership team has also changed this term with Esther Maleki appointed as Assistant Principal: Student Services with Vicky Mudge taking on a new role as Coordinator of Professional Learning and Practice. Niki Lesses has been appointed as the school's new ICT Coordinator which will see her review and develop our IT practices at the school. We also welcome Steph Herbert to our leadership team who is leading our Special Education programs and Sophie Hamlyn who has been appointed to the Coordinator role leading our study programs and our involvement in the School Sport pilot of combining SAPSASA and Secondary School Sport programs in Whyalla. In addition to our new leader we also we come a range new ancillary staff including Bianca Heading, Emily Inglis, Courtney Weetra, Sarah Kenny, Kate Kimberley and Kylie Sheedy. This term we have also seen the construction of our new Clontarf building at the back of the school and welcome Peter Rolfe to our school who will be leading the program at Eyre over the next three years. This is a fantastic opportunity for our young Aboriginal men as they transition from school to employment and further study opportunities.Last week both Belinda McEvoy and myself presented to a four person panel as part of our shortlisting for the Innovation in VET award for the State Training Awards.

The presentation allowed us to discuss some of the great work we have done through our local delivery model, the career development undertaken by students in our Career Pathways Program and our new programs in STEP (School to Employment Program) for transitioning students and Aboriginal Girls. We will be informed on July 1 whether we are named a State Finalist and will keep you informed through our website and Facebook page. This term has also seen our students contribute to the design process of Whyalla’s $100 million high school with architects. They have been involved in two workshops thus far where they have been able to identify what they believe will be important for senior students as part of the new school design. These sessions occurred with students and teachers from across Whyalla and are essential for the architects to gain an understanding of the Whyalla school community desires in the new build. In the coming weeks our stage 1 students will come to the end of their first SACE semester at the school. This will culminate with their involvement in their first block of exams to be held in week 7. Following this, students will begin their Research Project with an intensive 3 days in week 8. Both of these events are significant for our year 11 students and provides the platform for a successful start to their SACE and support us in making informed decisions around their subject choices for year 12. Information will be sent out shortly about these as well as promoted through the schools Facebook page. If you have any questions or queries about any of the activities and events at our school please feel to contact us.

STAGE 1 DIGITAL PUBLISHINGSince the beginning of the year, the focus within Stage 1 Digital Publishing has been on advertising. Recently, students applied their knowledge of art and document design to the task of designing their own advertisements. The work that was produced ranged from food, to travel agencies to consumer goods. As this chapter in Digital Publishing comes to a close, students will begin to refocus their efforts on technical writing and design in the second half of this year, in support of those who will be participating in a STEMIE competition in which they will be creating a short film

STAGE 2 FOOD AND HOSPITALITYStudents spent time in their practical cooking sessions creating rainbow themed food for IDAHOBIT day which was celebrated at the school. The food not only looked wonderful but tasted delicious too. In addition, the year 12 class have been creating food using a range of technological skills. The food they have created is a demonstration of these skills.

STAGE 2 HEALTHTwo members of the Headspace team visited the school to deliver an information session to the year 12 Health class. They spoke about their Mental Health initiatives and answered questions from the students.

STAGE 1 & 2 CHILD STUDIESStudents in Child studies have been engaged in making toys and educational aids for young children. Some of these toys were on display during the Career Expo. The students have used their imagination and knowledge of child development theory to create appropriate toys for children under the age of 8.

STAGE 2 SPECIALIST PHYSICAL EDUCATIONStudents in Stage 2 Specialist Physical Education have started their Lawn Bowls practical. Each Wednesday afternoon, students travel to the Whyalla Bowls Club to work with volunteers to improve their skills, techniques and knowledge of Lawn Bowls. We would like to congratulate all students for the way in which they have conducted themselves and represented the school throughout their practical lesson so far.

STAGE 1 PHOTOGRAPHY This term Stage 1 Photography students went on an excursion around Whyalla to capture images to create post cards to promote the town. These postcards will be included as a part of their final assessment. Once complete, they will be displayed at the Whyalla Maritime Museum.

STAGE 2 ENGLISHOver the past few weeks, Stage 2 English students have been viewing, analysing and exploring texts relating to examples of dystopian societies in our modern world. Students were asked to compare media articles, looking at the perspectives of modern writers. Students completed a film analysis on Black Mirror, where they discussed unique insights into the complexity of being human and the importance of individuality. This has allowed students to engage with many of the more difficult concepts in the course. Students have developed strong arguments around what makes a perfect or imperfect society - well done to all students involved!

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE PROGRAM (PPP)All teachers at Eyre High this year have been engaged in a Professional Practice Program which allows them to focus on improving their teaching practice. The school has invested money, leadership and time to provide a program where teachers work together in groups of 3-4. In addition, the PPP provides teachers the opportunity to:

• Engage in reflective dialogue about their work• Improve their classroom practices• Gain support from a peer who understands the daily demands of the classroom• Know that a peer is available to help, explain and assist• Develop expert knowledge in AITSL teacher progressions• Increase collaboration among teachers• Establish a professional learning community• Increase their focus on student achievement• Developing knowledge of reflective practice.

As part of the PPP schedule teachers have been involved in observations twice a term. This has meant that teachers have had their lessons recorded and shared with their group to provide feedback for improvement. The focus of these recordings has been the teachers practice, not the students. If you have any questions about the program please contact Vicky Mudge or Christina Scardelis at the school.

IDAHOBIT DAYIDAHOBIT Day: International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia was acknowledged by staff and students at EJEHS on Friday 17 May. Headspace supported the event by sharing information about support services available and providing a range of craft activities. This event was run by the SRC students and the Community Studies classes who made posters acknowledging celebrities who identify as a part of the LGBTIQ+ Community. They made rainbow food (colour theme of the event) and engaged in a range of activities.
