They DID it

The Mardi Gras committee members who worked hard to put the amazing event together was hard at work on the day, too. Highly visible in their orange shirts, they buzzed around solving problems. They are from left, with their portfolios: Sam Blake (OWLAG and general), Tarryn M a c a s k i l l ( m e d i a P R , communica t ion , facebook, website, marketing secretary), Marie Thompson (MC and some m e d i a ) , D e b b i e A l l o r t o (sponsors) Coral Bezuidenhout ( c h a i r m a n , t r e a s u r e r ,

Anthony (sponsors, signage, co-ordination) and Debbie Firbank (raffles, prizes, admin). Not in the photo: Grant Neve and Kerry Palmer (Lions pub, licences. Grant -horse activities), Lynda Parsonson (Midvaal liaison, sponsors, the Mayor), Amancia Louw ( sponsors , communication ) and Cheryl Mclintic (all the stalls, food, drinks, layout, fee collection, communication with stall holders ) There were several other role players who were not on the committee but played a significant part. The list of portfolios gives us a picture of what was involved in making this memorable event a reality.

Henley Watch and Henley Security Services (HSS) shared a corner stand at the recent Mardi Gras. We thank the organisers for an exceptionally well planned and advertised event that brought many feet through Henley and was thoroughly enjoyed by both Henleyites and others from further afield many of whom were visiting with plans on moving to Henley. The village is incredibly supportive of our new venture where the community, Henley Watch and HSS have joined up to present a united front in keeping our village safe along with the continued support from the CPF. Very few incidents were reported on the day. The parking attendants and security guard supplied by HSS during set up, on Mardi Gras day and then the clean-up, enjoyed being involved and appreciated the comradery. We would like to welcome all our new members recently recrui-ted onto the Team. We look forward to continuing to serve you all into the future. Henley Watch News

- Lorraine Haddath, Recruitment Officer

On 15 May, exactly one week after the elections, the DA paid to have all the remaining election posters removed. Here Gideon, well known for cleaning up around Henley, with Phyllis in her Rainbow Coatings bakkie, is seen removing posters near Hope Family Church which was the venue for the polling station. Some posters had been removed by the parties concerned but the takers-down did not have ladders which were as long as the original putters-up. Gideon's ladder was a tall one. If there are forgotten posters near you and you can't remove them yourself. Let Lynda Parsonson know.

We hear about the Fourth Industrial Revolution being upon us. I wonder what happened in the second and third. We all learnt about The Industrial Revolution in school, Spinning Jenny and Stevenson's Engine and all that, which was presumably number 1. Whatsls.com supplied the following definitions: “The fourth industrial revolution is the current and developing environment in which disruptive tecnologies and trends such as the Internet of Things (IoT), robotics, virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI) are changing the way we live and work. The third industrial revolution, sometimes called the digital revolution, involved the development of computers and IT (information technology) since the middle of the 20th century. The fourth industrial revolution is growing out of the third but is considered a new era rather than a continuation because of the explosiveness of its development and the disruptiveness of its technologies. The first industrial revolution, in the 18th and 19th centuries, involved a change from mostly agrarian societies to greater industrialization as a consequence of the steam engine and other technological developments. The next technological age, the second industrial revolution, was driven by electricity and involved expansion of industries and mass production as well as technological advances." - Ed

Taking the 4thOn 18 May 2019, MLM Executive Mayor, Cllr Bongani Baloyi, was invited to the Commemoration Event to mark the 1994 massacre in Rwanda at the Johannesburg Holocaust and Genocide Centre. The municipality honours the lives of 800000 Tutsi and mode-rate Hutus murdered during the Rwandan genocide and those who survived. Cllr Bongani Baloyi made the following remarks to the Rwandan delegation: “Our municipality is honoured to be part of this special event to commemorate the lives of Rwandan people who were massacred in 1994 during the during the Rwandan Civil War. We are inspired by the resilience Rwanda has shown for the past 25 years.” The municipality commends the Rwandan Government for their commitment to building long lasting peace for all citizens as well as the remarkable rate of development driven by its political will to uplift and empower the people of Rwanda.

Lions up a Tree.

On Monday 1 May (Workers Day) two courageous Lions, Lion Kerry Palmer and Lion Janine Birney climbed a tree, with the aid of a ladder, to an elevated platform erected by the Henley Scouts in a bluegum tree close to the CPF container at the corner of Ewelme and Henley Drive. The tree was festooned with balloons donated by OK Minimarket and a highly visible, attention grabbing sign explaining the goal of the event was erected. The climbing of the tree s tar ted a t 8am and the intrepid Lions accompanied by cushions and snacks vowed not to come down from the tree until they had raised R5000.00. With the ladder removed our Lions stayed up the tree until 3pm by which time an amazing R9600.00 had been donated

by Henley's very generous residents and visitors. Music was provided by Lion Carmen Andrews and Mitch de Beer (CPF) so a festive atmosphere prevailed. Donated fresh hen's eggs

were sold to visitors who wanted to try to hit our elevated Lions, a task easier said than done. Nevertheless several missiles found their mark. Several of the Lions supported the event and there was even dancing in the street. Passers-by approached the event with a wonderful sense of humour and generosity and the funds have risen since the date to more than R9600.00 at last count. Henley CPF partnered with the Lions in selling delicious boerie rolls, cooked to perfection, as

well as cooldrinks. They also handed out marshmallow Easter eggs. Thank you, Henley and your friends, too many to mention individually, for an outstanding and very successful day.

Last month's editorial about the

dreaded effects of the chemical

dihydrogen oxide was on the

surface a bit of nonsense

(heavily plagiarised from

anonymous sources) to amuse

our readers. (If you missed it go

to www.henleyherald.co.za and find it under

previous issues.) It can also be a lesson on fake

news. Not a word of the article was false yet the

article gave a completely skew idea of this well-

known chemical also called water: A reminder to

us to analyse everything we are told and read

critically.

The Mardi Gras on 25 May was the biggest

news in Henley. There are lots of photos from the

day. In next month's Herald there will be more

information on the sponsors and beneficiaries of

the day which saw Henleyites come out in their

numbers but also many from outside Henley.

Dear ResidentsFor this month's edition of the Herald I wanted to tell everyone about how much I love South Africa and how much I believe in her future. I am constantly inundated with fake news and prophecies of doom from people who seem to want to make me feel despondent about living in this beautiful country. I searched for ways to express my feelings about this and then I came across the following poem by Ian McDonald (coincidently McDonald is my maiden name) and it expresses everything I wanted to say, but more beautifully, so I want to hand the rest of my column over to this poem.

WHY I LOVE SOUTH AFRICA – by Ian MacDonaldI love her for the perfection of her daysThe crisp Karoo morningThe Jo'burg winter noonThe late summer Cape Town sunsetThe star-filled Free State night.I love her for her peopleFor our warm smilesFor our resilienceFor our I-am-because-we-areI love her because she delights my sensesHighveld thunderboltsJacarandas in bloomSunday braaisAfrican sunIcy seaI love her raw power, her intensity, her strength.I love her because of how she makes me feelSometimes angry, sometimes joyousSometimes fearful, sometimes love-filledSometimes frustrated, sometimes hopefulAlways aliveI love her because she intrigues meAnd challenges meThe Chinese have a curse: “May you live in interesting times”I see it as a blessingI love her because she helps me keep things in perspectiveBy reminding me how privileged I amEvery dayI love her for being a microcosm of the worldA world in one countryFor what we can teach the worldAbout compromiseAnd sharingAnd forgivenessAnd toleranceAnd hopeI love her because she's imperfectAnd full of opportunityAnd potential unfulfilledI love her because she has come so farAnd has so much further to goAnd whether we ever get thereWill all depend on usI love her because she's been so good to meAnd she inspires me to return the favour

I love her because she's my countryNo matter whatI love her because she's my homeAnd where my soul is at rest

MLM hands over bursaries

Councillor Lynda Parsonson

Do you have a problem or an issueyou would like to speak to

your ward councillor about?

Please come and chat to me at Henley Libraryon Saturday 22 June 2019 between nine and eleven

The Executive Mayor, Cllr Bongani Baloyi, is seen below with four of the fourteen recipients of bursaries, awarded through the Mayoral Student Assistant Scheme. They are deserving learners from across Midvaal and the bursaries will enable them to pursue their dreams of studying in institutions of higher learning. One of the recipients, Zodwa Ndlovu, was overwhelmed by this initiative and expressed gratitude to the Executive Mayor. “I'm very grateful to the Mayor of Midvaal. This is a great initiative and I hope that many young people will benefit from this” said Zodwa. Other recipients shared similar sentiments. “I can only wish you all the best and encourage you to pursue your dreams. One thing I like about you is that, your dreams are driven by passion and not linked to money. You are responsible for your own dreams, there is no any other person who can achieve your dreams for you,” said Cllr Baloyi. Midvaal is a youth biased municipality which prides itself on great youth investment and empowerment. Over the years, the municipality has invested over R1 million in education and youth empowerment.

The Executive Mayor, Cllr Bongani Baloyi hosted more than 500 young people from all wards across MLM to gather input from the youth under the theme “Youth in the 4th Industrial Revolution.” The inaugural youth summit was held on 5 June at the Meyerton Sports and Conference Centre where the best minds in Technology, the digital economy and Arts spoke on various issues and oppor-tunities that are available for young people. The 4th Industrial Revolution has the potential to raise income levels and improve the quality of life for all people. Young people were encouraged to reflect on the impact of technology on their everyday challenges and inspired to look for solutions which will benefit them and their communities. “This summit happens at time where young African people are increasingly realising the power and ability to confront and resolve their own challenges.” the Mayor said. The highlight of the summit was the feedback given by young people as they individually and collectively reflected on pertinent issues such as job creation, entrepreneurship, technology driven development and further contributed implementable ideas and projects. “Young people, let us invest in ourselves and make our communities proud, this is not a dream, but a plan, and I believe that this goal can only be realised if your people are at the forefront of our thinking and planning,” the Executive Mayor concluded.
