Our thanks go to Constructiv Clothing Ltd for our new logo design.
Introduction and what we are about.
We are a Non-Profit,Parkinson’s condition Social Community
group Charity, of friends who either have, or care for
someone living with Parkinson’s. We started an informal
social group in April 2016 to meet, exchange and signpost
ideas and information in a relaxed atmosphere. At every
meeting, we have guest speakers from various Parkinson’s
related groups and therapists who can offer support on a
regular basis. This year will see us having social trips for
the first time.We are based in Chirk but our members are
mainly from Shropshire and North East Wales and get
together on the second Wednesday of each month, usually
between 11:00am and 1:00pm but can go on longer.
We have since become a Parkinsons Condition Social
Community Group Charity
Our meetings are held at –
Moreton Garden Centre,Chirk,on the A5

how the group is being run and should either approach one
of the Team or put in writing for the next committee

to man the tables.

March
A lot is happening in the background at the moment. We
have been given lots of contacts for obtaining donations to
enable us to do what we said we would accomplish and
include more social outings this year to places such as The
Lake district,Llandudno,Shopping outings such as Cheshire
oaks,The iron Works,Northwest Model helicopter club who
will put on a flying display of small and large model
helicopters and planes and maybe the odd lawnmower and
teradactyl, whilst putting on a barbeque for us, and any
other suggestions that members can make.. On the same
subject we where passed details by Elaine at the last
meeting for “Three Parishes BIG LOCAL” at the Qube in
oswestry who will help us with a trip on a specially modified
barge, the details of which where passed on by Shiela and
strangely enough I had personally been on before
Christmas with another party. We took a picnic and had it
at a stop on the side of the canal,a thoroughly good day was
had by all.
Ian and chris will be attending various meetings with corrie
davies and others about the group and further funding. We
have this month received a donation of £150 from Les’s
wifes ex-employer at Synthite in Mold,so a big thankyou to
Anne and Les. Whilst on the subject I would like to say
personally a big thankyou to all the members who have
donated at each get together.
During the last week of march saw lilly and mysel travelling
to Chatham Maritime Museum for a pre-booked parkinsons
physio course run by Karl Sterling from NYC,USA.
April
Well folks what a couple of months its been, our vice
chairman (Neil Benny) has moved away and is longer
asociated with us ,much to my surprise. Phil Bowen has
stepped into his shoes and with dismay has already put
together a promotional letter to local businesses and
groups for donations,well done phil.
I ,along with chris arkwright (our treasurer) where asked
to attend a meeting with Corrie davies (community
enablement officer for shropshire ) and Kim Thompson-
Lawrence ( Volunteering) Officer and community
connections network coordinator) to discuss other groups
who would like connections or help from our group.
Community Connections Meeting - April)
Myself and very kindly Sheila Catmur, attended a meeting
of Oswestry “Community Connections” to introduce our
group by way of myself giving a 15 minute talk about us and
its history with shiela filling in the spaces as a member.
Sheila’s perspective – Peter from Shropshire council gave
an introducton, then each participant gave an introduction
with their name and organisation or group. We had an
interesting talk from a representative of Headway,in
shrewsbury who listed all the help offered to people with
acquired head injuries, then the next participant from
Hope House told us about all the help offered to families
of expected or unexpected deaths. We then had a pretty
much free for all talk and listed on paper charts the things
we thought most important to a community.
Thanyou Shiela for your first feedback.
April also saw me attending a long time arranged talk to the
Oswestry Round Table, I was due to give the talk following
the donation we received from the club last year.
I was the first to arrive at the Wynnstay Hotel in oswestry
and very quickly realised that I was completely Under
dressed for the occasion as the first of the clubs members
arrived to whom I was introduced one by one,we all had a
beautifully laid out dinner of salmon, potatoes and sauce, and
fresh vegetables…not expected at all followed by my very
nervous talk/spluttter.
May
I must first send condolence to Phil Bowens family
following the death of his father, phil will be joining us again
next month. Also,Ken and kate will probably not be joining
us for a few months following kens addmision into respite
care following a sudden change in his meds effects,we wish
them both a good outcome.
You will have noticed some last minute changes to the
speaker dates,I have done this to fit in Keele university in
june and shuffled others to accommodate.
I must thank Shiela and John Catmur for arranging a
choice of dates for the barge trip/I will be sending out a
request form to select a suitable date, but towards the end
of July looks the most favourable. I am also looking for a
local coach company to take us to Llandudno for the day.
We have ths month received a donation cheque by
Borderlands Rotary Club to the sum of £500 pounds
bringing bankable funds to approximately £927.
June
Last month saw us having a visit fro Keele Universities Dr
Sue Hunter And Phd Student Aseel. They had been in
contact with me for some months following a reference to
me by Professor Rose Fricker ,also from Keele,to test the
waters to see if we wold be interested in becoming involved
in a new research program based on fitness and methods of
gaining fitness.I think the overall meetimg went well and I
had excellent feedback from Dr Hunter about the way the
group worked and how the meeting was run,she had not
come across as good a working model as it is,the same I
wish could be said from the Parkinsons uk group that had
been asked to attend,I include the extract taken from the
june issue of Parkinsons Uk Wrexham Group Newsletter ,
Following an invitation to the Branch by Ian Bunting, Sylvia, Mary,
Brian and Miroslaw went to a research talk by a student from Keele
University at the Moreton Garden Centre. Ellen and Geoff Harding
from Llangollen Support Group also attended. It was felt that this was
not quite as professional as the research talk recently held at the
Llangollen Support Group and those attending were a little worried
about the statements made about people with Parkinson’s.
Hopefully comments at the talk may have helped this young lady to
understand more about the problems of coping with Parkinson’s.
I have forwarded a copy of said newsletter to Dr Hunter.
We again tested the waters with concern about our members
being able to hear the speaker properly, especially at the
back, having tried two screens to quieten the area, this was
better but still not acceptable,to this end I have loaned
(with a possible view to purchase) a small PA system with a
Headset microphone and separate loud speaker which can be
placed at the back to throw the sound forwards,we hope this
works as Sarah Roberts from Estyn wellbeing will be testing
it for the first time, but also will be running the whole session
with Deborah as I will be visiting the Parkinsons Uk Offices
in London for a meeting about me becoming Wales Member
for YOPD,YPA (Young onset pd and Youmg Peoples Alliance)
, more news about this in the next issue.
Enact – PD. Mentioned last month. As the project comes to
an end later this year, the results will be analyzed and
released. Whilst it would be wrong of me tocomment on my
current feeling,I can say that from a personal point of
view,it has enabled me to partly to control points related to
pd in my brain,
A leaflet about this was enclosed with last months
pamphlet..
I have started a new research project again with Bangor
University into cognitive behaviour.
Barge Trip
Hopefully all our members have been contacted by
myself and given one of two dates on which we are
runnng trips,I quickl became aware that 1 trip wold
not be enough as only 12 people can be accomodated
at a time. This is a free trip but you will need a
packed lunch for a picnic

charity but for the members to benefit from the donations
we receive. The member and promotional day donations will
go towards costs and the purchase of merchandise, whilst
donations from other groups and, will go towards social
events such as trips to places that are of interest to
members.
I Am currently compiling a fuller list to add to the above
