DJ Walker2011 Ohio Youth of the Year and Sam & Alice Carson Scholar, DJ Walker, recently graduated with his Master’s Degree in Psychology from Cleveland State University. DJ reached out to the Clubs recently to express appreciation for the support he received as he continued on his path to higher education. DJ specifically mentioned the skills and habits he learned from the Club’s Money Matters program, and says because of the program he has a healthy budget that has positioned him for financial stability. DJ plans to use his degree by conducting cognitive behavioral groups within a correctional facility where he is employed.

Alicia FlenoyAlicia Flenoy, the 2016 Sam & Alice Carson Scholar, has completed her second year at the University of Toledo where she is studying Criminal Justice. She recently joined the National Honors Society and is in pursuit of a career as a detective. Currently, Alicia is employed as the Cadet Instructor at the North Toledo Boys & Girls Club, where she encourages seven, eight, and nine

year olds to strive to do their best each day and reminds them that they can do anything they set their minds to.

Tobria Layson2010 Youth of the Year and Carson Scholar Tobria Layson recently graduated with her Bachelors of Science in Nursing and plans to continue her career as a Registered Nurse. Tobria credits the Clubs with helping guide her though hard times at home and encouraging her to continue along her path to education. Tobria is heading to Tennessee to start her journey as a nurse.

Candace CooperCandace is a 2014 Sam & Alice Carson Scholar, and graduated with her Bachelors of Social Work degree with Honors Research Distinction from The Ohio State University. Candace is the first African American woman to achieve this distinction in the history of The Ohio State University. She plans to spend the summer working at the East Toledo Club.

Reza ParkmanThe 2013 Youth of the Year and Carson Scholar, Reza Parkman graduated from Owens Community College with an Associates of Applied Science in Culinary Arts. Reza is currently employed at the University of Toledo and pursuing her bachelor’s degree. She hopes to work in either public health or business management.

Keyaunte JonesA Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo alumnus and Carson Scholar, Keyaunte Jones has embodied the mission of our local Clubs for ten years. Last year, he earned the opportunity to tell his story on a local, state, regional and national scale, representing all of the Clubs and Club members in the Midwest Regional Youth of the Year Competition.

Keyaunte has completed his Freshman year at Grambling State University where he is studying biology and playing baseball.

Keyaunte hopes to earn a degree in biology and possibly enter medical school and open his own sports medicine firm.

ANNUAL REPORTJUNE 2017 - MAY 2018

The past year has been truly special for me and Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo (BGCT). It is a real honor and privilege to be President of the Board of Trustees for this organization for a number of reasons. The most important of these being the impact that we make on nearly 6,000 youth in the city of Toledo every single year. At any given time after school hours or between noon and 5 p.m. during the summer, you can walk through one of the four Club locations and see hundreds of smiling, energetic, happy faces. The Clubs are safe, enriching and fun. They really are life changing for such a big part of our community.

For over 40 years, BGCT’s Executive Director, Dave Wehrmeister, has been a part of the mission and movement locally. A BGCT alumnus, Dave knows firsthand the impact the four Club buildings, filled with passionate staff, has on a daily basis.

In May, Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) awarded Dave with its highest and most prestigious professional honor, the Thomas G. Garth Courage and Character Award. I was fortunate enough to be present at the gala. Congratulations, Dave, your humility and character are truly an inspiration for not only each and every Club member, but to the staff and to the entire Board of Trustees.

The Thomas G. Garth Character and Courage Award was created in memory of the former BGCA President. The award is presented each year during the national conference to a Club professional who best exemplifies the qualities and character that made Garth an extraordinary leader and role model during his five decades of service to the organization.

While Dave has worked the entirety of his career locally in Toledo, he has made an impact at the state, regional and national levels. He is highly respected at the national level and BGCA President and CEO, Jim Clark, said it best:

“Dave Wehrmeister is an icon in our movement because of all he has contributed to make a difference for youth who need us most. His focus is always clear on what’s best for kids and teens; while assisting Clubs throughout the country with his wisdom and expertise. The Garth award is the highest recognition bestowed upon a professional in the Boys & Girls Club movement and there is no more befitting person than Dave to receive this honor. He is a tireless advocate for ensuring kids are on a level playing field. His concentration is on creating the pathway to a great future for all members. Dave fosters the American dream; bringing to life the endless possibilities for youth versus letting where they live determine their future. He is the quintessential professional in all he does and a dedicated father, husband and mentor for all.”

Courage and Character AwardDave Wehrmeister – Thomas G. Garth

Planned Giving SpotlightBoys & Girls Clubs of Toledo founder, John Gunckel, who passed away on August 16, 1915, left a legacy of service to youth by establishing the Newsboys Association which was a precursor to the Boys’ Club movement in Toledo. Gunckel’s memorial is a pyramid shaped monument at historic Woodlawn Cemetery. It is presently being restored thanks to help from the Bricklayers Local #3 Union, Rudolph Libbe, and Great Lakes Restoration. The John E. Gunckel Heritage Society is for donors who have made provisions for the Clubs in their estate plans. Being named the Earl G. Cook Organizational Youth of the Year means that person embodies the Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo mission and has proven to be a leader among peers at the Club.

Tayviauna has done just that and continues to make a tremendous impact at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo.

Tayviauna has been a member at the North Toledo Club at Sherman Elementary since 2008. She is a part of the Teen Employment Corp (T.E.C.) program at the Clubs, working and assisting the adult staff with program implementation and member engagement. She credits much of her success to her mentor, Club Director, Kelly Duling.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo is proud to announce that the 2018 Sam & Alice Carson Scholarship has been awarded to Robert.

A Club member since the age of six, Robert has credited the Clubs with helping him become the person he is today and providing a fun environment to learn and play. Robert is in the Clubs’ T.E.C. Teen program and has worked at the East Toledo Club for the past two years. He recently graduated from Central Catholic High School.

Robert plans to attend the University of Toledo this fall with a focus on Mechanical Engineering. Congratulations, Robert!

This report is intended to recognize persons or organizations who contributed to Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo from May 17, 2017 to May 18, 2018. Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of this report. If your support came after May 18, 2018, recognition will come in next year’s Annual Report.

Can you describe what led youto first become engaged withthe Clubs?

“We have a heart for giving back to our community. We first attended Barefoot at the Beach several years ago and fell in love with it. We have attended many events and this is by far our favorite. From there, we made it our goal to learn more about the Clubs and felt a strong connection to serve in a larger role. I joined the board and we both started volunteering and getting involved in more fundraisers including Barefoot at the Beach, Toledo Ladies for the Clubs and Border Battle Bash.”

Supporter Spotlight: Jeff & Sarah BucherSarah and Jeff Bucher, of Citizen Advisory Group, are tireless champions of Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo. Sarah and Jeff have supported the Clubs as advocates in the community, volunteered time to spend with our members and promotes the mission both personally and professionally. Sarah currently serves as a member of our Board of Trustees. She spent some time reflecting on why she and her family support the Clubs.

Share a little with us on what you and Jeff (and the kids) find rewarding about giving backto others:

“I grew up with a single mom and when we were young, times were tough. I am so proud of my mom for her hard work in overcoming a very hard financial situation. Both Jeff and I are first generation college graduates and we have always felt it is important to help those who are less fortunate.

We have two young children and have also felt very strongly the importance for them to learn to give back to the community and teach that life is not always easy. For some, the Club is home where they get the love and attention they need to thrive. We are so very fortunate to be in a position to support the Clubs in these efforts.”

To an outsider, describe what the Club means to you, and the feeling(s) you take away whenyou work with our kids:

“We know that not everyone has the love, care and support at home, so it is an incredible opportunity for us to be a part of the Clubs and provide that to kids that don’t have it. Whether that is from us directly or through programming that we can help support. If one part of their day or one part of their week they can go to the Club and have someone show them love and concern that they don’t find anywhere else in their life, that might spark them to do incredible things in the future.”

In 2017, Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo celebrated 125 years of operation and service to youth. Throughout the year, we celebrated the history of the Club and how our local movement began. The Toledo organization is one of the 53 founding Clubs of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America movement that now has over 4,000 Clubs and serves over 4 million youth. Last August at Barefoot at the Beach, the celebration continued and brought the Club’s history directly to donors. Special surf boards were printed with a timeline of our history and our anniversary logo. A sand sculpture of the 125th Anniversary logo was created on-site and was a popular photo backdrop for guests.

To wrap up the year, the Clubs held an anniversary celebration for staff members. All 54 members of the staff team were asked to bring a unique item to place in a time capsule and to be prepared to share a small description of why that item was significant. The capsule will be opened in 25 years, at our 150th anniversary. The celebration also included a discussion of the Club’s history, a display of some of the Club’s artifacts and photo archives.

Volunteers from Fifth Third Bank enjoyed working with members of the Homer Hanham Club

Fifth Third Bank is a proud corporate partner of Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo, and has consistently supported the Clubs over the past 30 years. Fifth Third Day (5/3 Day) was started here in NW Ohio and is an initiative of the bank to dedicate this day (May 3rd) to the community that we serve and give back both financially and through volunteerism. The bank chose to work with the Clubs on this day, and brought bankers and employees down to our Carson Family Club for a day with our members.

The children served at Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo represent the communities that we look to invest in to revitalize and stabilize. By supporting Barefoot at the Beach, the Clubs’ main fundraiser, we are investing in the communities who need the greatest improvement in financial stability, housing and job development. Bob LaClair, President at Fifth Third Bank of Northwestern Ohio, is a proud Alumnus of Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo and is serving as Honorary Chair of this year’s Barefoot at the Beach.
