    BOYZ N THE HOOD

Fantastic Fest Presents:BELLADONNA OF SADNESS (1973)One of the great lost masterpieces of Japanese animation, neverbefore officially released in the U.S., this film is a mad, swirling, psychedelic light-show of medieval tarot-card imagery withhorned demons, haunted forests and La Belle Dame Sans Merci, equal parts J.R.R. olkien and gorgeous, explicit Gustav Klimt-influenced eroticism. A young woman, Jeanne, is violentlyraped by the local lord on her wedding night. o take revenge, she makes a pact with the Devil who appears as an erotic spriteand transforms her into a vision of madness and desire.

Victory Screening: BEVERLY HILLS COP (1984)ough-talking Detroit cop Axel Foley heads to the rarified

world of Beverly Hills in his beat-up Chevy Nova to investigatea friend’s murder. But soon, he realizes he’s stumbled onto

something much more complicated. Bungling rookie detectiveBilly Rosewood joins the fish-out-of-water Axel and shows himthe West Los Angeles ropes.

Mondo x Chiller: CAT IN THE BRAIN (1990)We’re giving away Mondo’s A CAT IN THE BRAIN Original Mo-tion Picture Soundtrack LP to one lucky winner at this screening!

One of Italian horror director Luico Fulci’s final films can beconsidered either unwatchable tosh, or the very essence of Fulcidistilled into one of the most bonkers, hilarious and downrightgory splatter films he – or anyone else – has ever made. Fulcibasically plays himself, a low budget horror director, who seemsto be having a complete mental breakdown, seeing visions ofnasty murders that he may or may not be actually committing.Basically, it’s the greatest hits of gore shoehorned into 80 min-utes and the FX, although low budget, are jaw-dropping.

Temple of Schlock: GALAXY OF TERROR (1981)Rare 35mm screening presented by the American Genre Film

Archive! Introduced by Temple of Schlock’s Chris Poggiali.

A rescue crew dispatched to the planet Morganthus to searchfor the survivors of a crashed spaceship encounter a malevolentpower that, one by one, turns their worst fears against them.Perhaps the goriest and most outrageous of the outer spacehorror movies to come out in the wakeof ALIEN, this typicallyefficient Roger Corman concoction features terrific productiondesign by a then-unknown James Cameron, a top-notch castof familiar faces, and two or three of the most repulsive andmemorable death scenes of the 1980’s.

Prints of Darkness:INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1978)Donald Sutherland stars as a San Francisco health inspector

who, along with a colleague played by Brooke Adams, discoversthat the populace is being replaced by “pod people” who areidentical in every way—except for their lack of emotion. Anightmare chase ensues in which our heroes can no longer trusttheir friends and loved ones, punctuated by moments of sheershock and terror. Te strong supporting cast includes LeonardNimoy in what may be his best non-Spock role and an earlyturn by Jeff Goldblum, and it all leads up to one of the mostchilling conclusions in genre-film history.

Monday Night Thread Up:NIGHTHAWKS (1981)NIGHHAWKS partners Sly up with none other than RutgerHauer - making his American cinema debut - playing thealmost blanket 80s action movie terrorist with a reckless glee, leading to a tumultuous on screen (and apparently off, if theproduction stories are to be believed) relationship between thetwo actors. It’s is more than just a showcase for its two thenyoung stars though. It’s also one of the better NYC set, grittycrime thrillers of that decade, with the city’s penchant for (c)harm coming through in every scene and culminating in thenow famous chase sequence that involves the Roosevelt Islandram. It’s exceptional genre cinema and the toughest cop moviein a year of great, tough cop movies.

    Classic Hollywood:

THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH (1955)om Ewell stars as a New York City executive whose wife andchild are away for the summer. In the heat of the city, living inhis empty apartment, he meets a new neighbor: the impossiblygorgeous Monroe. If Manhattan in August isn’t hot enough,Monroe adds another layer of steam-heat to Ewell’s life. Hespends the rest of this hilarious farce in various states of tempta-tion. Tis is one of Monroe’s finest comic performances, whereshe is at her peak as the ditzy blonde bombshell character shehelped define – and this film contains the iconic dress-blowing-up scene that she’s so identified with.

It’s also a snapshot of sweet BMX

wheelies, dummies being lit on fire, and amateur nunchuckattacks. When can we move to Union, Missouri?

Tere has never been a more depraved antihero than RobertDeNiro’s ravis Bickle, the cab-driving sociopath with a gun fe-tish and a hatred for scum. Troughout the film, he stalks New

York City’s 42nd Street district, catching matinee screenings ofporno flicks and struggling to connect with another soul in the

wretched insect-hive that was ‘70s Manhattan.

Te seedy script from Paul Schrader (ROLLING HUNDER,OBSESSION, AMERICAN GIGOLO) and the direction froma young Scorsese create the definitive portrait of New YorkCity as the center of sleaze, a city bubbling up with the kind

wretched characters and establishments that would give Satanheartburn. DeNiro’s Bickle is a brilliant portrait of extremealienation; the score from legendary composer Bernard Her-rmann – his last – is perfect; Michael Chapman’s cameraworkmakes sidewalks look subterranean.
