June 2016 – “100 Deadliest Days” of Summer for Teens

The 100 days after Memorial Day are known as “the 100 Deadliest Days” for all drivers, but they

are by far the deadliest for teen drivers. Researchers analyzed 2,200 crashes and found nearly 60

percent of teen crashes during this time involved distracted driving according to a new study by the

AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. Texting and social media use behind the wheel is also on the rise.

Over the past five years, more than 5,000 people have been killed in crashes involving teen drivers

during the “100 Deadliest Days.” The study compared new crash statistics with those from 2007 -2012

and found consistent trends in the top three distractions for teens when behind the wheel in the

moments leading up to a crash are as follows:

Talking or attending to other passengers in the vehicle: 15 percent of crashes

Talking, texting or operating a cell phone: 12 percent of crashes

Attending to or looking at something inside the vehicle: 11 percent of crashes

Every day nationally during the summer driving season, an average of 10 people die as a result of

injuries from a crash involving a teen driver. This new research shows that distraction continues to be

one of the leading causes of crashes for teen drivers. By better understanding how teens are distracted

on the road, we can better prevent deaths throughout the “100 Deadliest Days” and the rest of the year.

It’s no secret that teens are extremely connected to their cell phones. Many teens are texting or using

social media behind the wheel more often than in the past, which is making an unsafe situation even

worse. Research by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute found that texting creates a crash risk 23

times worse than driving while not distracted. A recent AAA survey shows that nearly 50 percent of

teen drivers admitted they had read a text message or email while driving in the past 30 days.

NHTSA’s National Occupant Protection Use Survey also shows that from 2007 to 2014, the

percentage of young drivers seen visibly manipulating a hand-held device quadrupled. Nearly two-

thirds of people injured or killed in crashes involving a teen driver are people other than the teen

themselves. This shows that teen drivers can be a risk to everyone on the road and it is important to

regulate their actions when behind the wheel. Keeping cell phones out of the hands of teens while

driving is a top priority for AAA. In preparation for the “100 Deadliest Days”, AAA encourages

parents to educate their teen about the dangers of distracted driving and monitor their actions behind

the wheel. Parents should:

Have conversations early and often about the dangers of distraction.

Make a parent-teen driving agreement that sets family rules against distracted driving.

Teach by example and minimize distractions when driving.

TeenDriving.AAA.com has a variety of tools to help prepare parents and teens for the dangerous

summer driving season. The online AAA StartSmart program also offers great resources for parents on

how to become effective in-car coaches as well as advice on how to manage their teen’s overall driving

privileges. Teens preparing for the responsibility of driving should enroll in a driver education program

that teaches how to avoid driver distraction and other safety skills.

Much of the above article and statistics came from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety and the

Utah Dept. of Public Safety. Unfortunately at the time of this writing on June 2nd we are only 2 days

into “the 100 Deadliest Days” here in Utah and have experienced 5 highway fatalities statewide.

Traffic crashes can happen at any time and on any type of roadway. They can and do happen to all

ages of drivers and passengers, and as stated, many times the injured or killed are not the driver who

drove badly or was distracted.

Please talk with all of the drivers in your family about driving safety and the dangers of driving

while distracted or impaired. Wear your seat belts, use appropriate car seats and obey the speed limits.

Traffic enforcement in Lindon will be increased during this time. Watch for Officers on the streets!

Together we can try to beat the curse of “the 100 Deadliest Days” and will all be here to enjoy many

more years to come.

June: Get the Facts about

Cardboard Recycling

Cardboard and paper make up 41%

of the solid waste stream coming

from neighborhoods just like

yours! Remember to place any cardboard or paper products in

your blue recycling bin. To make sure you have plenty of

room for other recyclable items be sure to break down your

cardboard boxes. Remember that overfilling your recycling

container makes it difficult for Republic Services to empty

your container. After your cardboard is sorted at the recycling

facility it is packed into large bales like the one pictured

above! If you are interested in ordering a recycling can please

contact the Lindon City Utilities Clerk at 801-785-5043 or by

FIREWORKS DISCHARGE RESTRICTIONS

Because of a result of extreme fire danger along our mountain

interface and our west wetland area, Lindon City has a

permanent fireworks and open fire restriction in place. These

areas include all land west of

Interstate 15 within the Lindon City

limits, including the Lindon Marina.

This also includes all “Undeveloped

Land” within the City Limits as well

as all City Parks. On the east side of

town restrictions include all areas

within an approximate distance of 500 feet from the foothills

and U.S. Forest Service or BLM lands. This includes the Dry

Canyon Trailhead and the 1200 East Horse Transfer Station. It

was decided that in the interest of clarity, these boundaries

would be drawn using existing city roads which are at least

500 feet from designated lands. Restriction warning signs will

be posted near the border of restricted areas. Please help us all

to be safe and to protect our beautiful natural environment and

watershed. Please reference the maps below for exact

boundaries. Fireworks are not allowed in all Lindon City

Parks (signs will be posted)!
