Hyderabad has become a progressive jungle of concrete and steel, steadily climbing the ladder of global recognition. But surprisingly, within this jungle of noise and buildings and modernization, there is the existence of another jungle that is completely an antithesis of the megacity; one that is teeming with life and is more primal, uncivilized and yet, exotically beautiful. This place is called the Kasu Brahmananda Reddy National Park, or commonly abbreviated as KBR National Park, and no tourist visiting Hyderabad should ever miss visiting this park.

Hyderabad is a city that has witnessed a surge of progress and growth over the yesteryears.

KBR National Park was established in 1994 and was named after the former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. Spread over an area of 156 hectares, the park serves as a home to wide variety of flora and fauna. It has around 600 species of flora and around 113 species of birds, 20 species of reptiles and butterflies.

The dense trees and foliage inside the park will most of the time cause a drop in temperature and one can feel that, once one enters the park premises. It is a wonderful feeling of freshness and coolness that cannot be found in the humid and sweaty environment of the city. Most of all, good infrastructure of toilets, dustbins and benches, all backed by an able group of park custodians and maintenance crew who ensures that the park is clean and well-maintained, preserving its beauty and grandeur for generations to come. KBR National Park remains open on all days from 6 am to 6 pm. Guided tours and slide shows can be arranged at the park. This park is a perfect place for nature walks, picnics and also a good location where you can spend time with the whole family away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The park provides an excellent open space and is an oasis to the busy city life with rising pollution levels. Some of the animals that make their home in the park include: pangolin, small Indian civet, peacock, jungle cat and porcupines. There are few water bodies present in the park providing the needed moisture for the plants and quenching the thirst of birds and small animals.

In the last decade, due to the increasing thrust of governments across the globe toward fuel conservation and clean energy, solar power capacity has increased by more than 45 times and stands at about 184 GW in 2014. In India, capacity additions in solar

power have been more remarkable. In contrast to mere 10 MW in 2010, the total solar capacity in India has grown to nearly 3000 MW in 2015.The growth rate in solar capacity has been accompanied by rapidly declining cost curves. Solar system costs have come down by approximately 70% in the past five years owing to technological advancements resulting in lower manufacturing and processing costs. In India, solar power prices discovered through competitive bidding have come down by over 50% in the last four years.

Telangana has a vast solar potential with an average solar insulation of nearly 5.5 kWh/m2 for more than 300 sunshine days. The Government of Telangana intends to make use of the positive environment in the solar market and the push given by the Government of India for substantially harnessing the solar potential in the state of Telangana.

Telangana State’s New Solar Power Policy has provisions which aim at creating an enabling environment for prospective solar power developers to harness substantial quantum of solar power in the best possible manner. This in turn is expected to meet the objectives of the state government to provide competitive, reliable power supply to its consumers and to ensure a sustainable fuel mix in the future as well.

A solar policy cell will be set up for policy implementation and will undertake single-window clearance for all the projects. A transaction charge of rupees 10,000/MW shall be charged for processing through single-window clearance with a maximum of rupees 2 lakhs per project. The modalities of the single-window clearance mechanism will be notified within 30 days.

As stated in the policy, the state will extend all facilities and fiscal incentives provided by the Central government or National Solar Mission to the manufacturers and others in solar parks.

I am glad to inform you that UBM India is organizing the first edition of RenewX on December 17 and 18, 2015 at HITEX Exhibition Center, which will cover the detailed developments of solar energy. Meanwhile, I would encourage you to go ahead and read inside to know more about Telangana State’s Solar Policy.

TELANGANA OUTSHINES WITH SOLAR POWER ENERGYA power generating station can be of varied types that banks on the sort of fuel used. The most commonly used techniques for producing electricity are power plants that use thermal, nuclear and hydro energy. There are other small-scale approaches for generating power in order to cater for discrete demands; these are solar, geo-thermal and tidal powers. These stand-in methodologies have gained importance due to the fast depletion of natural fuels accessible to us.

Being a power source that is indefinitely renewable, solar energy is going to pave the way for future sustainable power consumption. In a world where Global Warming is a real threat, solar energy is the answer to minimise the pollutions that result in negative impact on the planet. With a high solar insulation, India is the ideal place to harness the power of the sun. In July 2009, India initiated the USD 19 Billion worth solar project to produce 20 GW power by 2020.

India is having the right combination of factors that will catapult the solar photovoltaic adoption schemes into a different level altogether. The government of India is taking proactive approach to promote solar power through various strategies. One of the recent budgets (2010/11) has seen the disbursement of r1000 crores towards the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission. It is a considerable increase when compared to the previous budget by 380 crores.

One of the key initiatives of Telangana’s Power Policy is facilitating the setting up of dedicated solar panels for production of equipment and components required for power generation and to carry out R&D activities in the field.

The government is inspiring the setting up of solar roof top projects by encouraging corporates and individuals to generate solar power on their terraces and supply to the grid by adopting net metering to minimize their bills. The government is also working towards gradually replacing conventional agricultural pump sets with solar pump sets.

Some of the incentives given by the state government as part of its policy are: exemption from Land Ceiling Act, fast track clearance, grid connectivity, full refund on value-added tax (VAT) and goods & services tax (GST), refund of stamp duty, no electricity wheeling charges, etc.

In addition to all these strategies, the Telangana government are concentrating on the creation of solar power parks that will host many solar power projects by having good infrastructure.

The solar power policy combined with the I-pass policy of the state is definitely resulting in the growth of solar energy production in Telangana. This will make Telangana a power surplus state very soon.

With the industry in the newly formed Telangana state all poised for growth, the state has projected a net power shortage of 1000 MW in the next three months. To bridge this gap, the state government is looking into and analysing various alternatives to make Telangana number one in power production; one such initiative is optimizing the production levels at Singareni plant.

Since the costs of solar systems have reduced by nearly 70% in the past 5 years due to the technological advancements, Telangana government is pushing to capitalize on this. To make it investor friendly, the Telangana state government has announced the “Telangana Solar Power Policy 2015”. With the Telangana government’s transparent and attractive policy, there is tremendous interest amongst investors to set up solar power plants in the state.
