THE PUGET SOUND REGION VINTAGE CHEVROLET CLUB OF AMERICA
Our 47th year!
Ballard Syttende Mai Parade
Text and Photos by Dave Haddock
On a beautiful, sunny Saturday afternoon the lovely Chevys started to arrive at the home of Evie and Rod Schein. Each new arrival was greeted with appreciative excitement from our group as well as the neighbors. Our mini parade from the Schein residence to the Parade staging area was a nice start to the day. Rod staged the cars with the oldest first. So, Bob Stamnes in his '26 (only 88 years old) led with Dave Haddock in his '55 (a mere 59 years old), as the last car. Bob was followed by Bill Damm in his '29, Rod Schein in his ‘40, Dave Roberts in his '41, Dick Jones in his '50, and John Anderson in his '54 Cor-vette. Passengers included MG Stamnes and Vicki Olsen with Bob, Karen Damn with Bill, Bill Marshall with Rod, Bet-ty Roberts with Dave, Gisela Jones with Dick, Patricia An-derson with John and Evie Schein, Diane Haddock and Monica Haddock with Dave.
Once we arrived at the staging area we joined a high school marching band from Bellevue, a few other classic cars and numerous clowns and cos-tumed participants. We were the 57th group in the huge parade (said to be the largest celebra-tion of 17th of May outside of Norway). Evie Schein, dressed in her native Norwegian attire, and Bill Damm's daughter, Karen, lead our group, holding the club banner. They were assisted by Kristin Schein with her children ; Garrison (6) and Cora (4 ½). We all had a great time celebrating the day and showing off our cars. After the parade, we gathered again at the Schein’s home where everyone enjoyed a tasty Norwegian smorgasbord prepared by Evie with contributions from the group. It was a wonderful time to meet with friends and enjoy a communal meal. Those who brought their cars can get their passports stamped by Rod at our June Strawberry Social.

By Director, Al Howe
Our meeting on May 19th was our last meeting at the school until September. Because of tours
and scheduling conflicts we had low attendance, but a very good meeting. Dick Jones showed
some photos of his and Gisela’s trip to New Zealand. What a wonderful trip they had! Our
June meeting will be the Gail Darby Memorial Strawberry Social. On July 19th we will have a
tour & potluck at my house. August 25th is the very popular dinner meeting at the XXX Root
Beer Drive-in Restaurant in Issaquah with Jose. I hope to see you all at these very important
meetings.
On May 25th I got to chauffeur a newlywed couple from
their wedding reception at Lake
Tapps Lodge in Maple Valley to
the groom’s parents house. They
just wanted to leave the festivi-
ties in an old car and I got to
provide the old car. They chose
from my three cars. It was a
good thing they chose the ’55
Bel Air, because he was wearing a tuxedo, she a wedding dress and it
was raining. I don’t really know them but it seems the bride has an un-
cle who is into old cars and knew someone who recommended me.
Hum! I don’t know who that is but thank them for the recommenda-
tion. I had fun and they seem like a very nice couple.
So far my old Chevys have made me a movie star and a chauffeur. What’s next?
“Congressmen: When they tell a joke it becomes a law, when they make a law it be-
comes a joke”. Will Rogers, Ambassador of Good Will, Prince of Wit and Wisdom, by P.J.
O’Brien, Copyright 1935. Will Rodgers was loved by people around the world and was just a
cowboy and comedian at heart. Yes, I just finished reading this book. Found it in the piles
where it has been hiding for years. Kathy and I are trying to reduce the volumes of stuff we
have and combine two households. Not an easy job. Does anyone want to borrow this book for
some good reading?

CHEVROLET TRIVIA
Out of all the submissions for last month’s trivia question—”When did Chevrolet resume production
of trucks after WW2 for the civilian market?”—only the answer from Jim Martoza was the closest but
he didn’t get it quite correct. The actual date (according to the Editor’s sources) was October 3, 1945.
For this month, be the first to send the correct answer to the following question to tappetclat-
[email protected] for a special prize!
In 1966 Chevrolet unveiled the Camaro as a competitor to Ford's Mustang. What code name did
Chevrolet use for the Camaro ?
Tour to Al and Kathy’s house on July 19th for a day of fun and BBQ
It will not rain! Guaranteed!
Al and Kathy will provide the hamburgers and hot dogs. You bring whatever else you
want to eat or share. Al has planned two tours, one from the XXX Root Beer Restaurant
in Issaquah and one from the Supermall in Auburn. However, because he will be at
home getting things ready he will not be able to lead either tour so he will arrange to
have someone else lead them.
Al really needs to know approximately how many will attend so that he will have
enough meat on the BBQ. So if you plan on attending please send him an email or call
before July 4th telling him how many will be in your party.
Each tour should leave their starting point at 10am and arrive at Howe’s house a little
before 11am. (Address and phone number removed. See mailed or emailed Tappet Clat-
ter)

Our strawberry social
Happens each June,
When the berries are ripe
Hopefully it’s not too soon,
To have some shortcake,
With whip cream too.
We hope it’s good weather,
And the skies are blue.
We treasure this time
We can spend together,
And swap some stories,
Like birds of a feather.
We foster good friendships
That last and last.
And remember our friends
Who since have passed.

DO YOU HAVE LEAKING REAR WHEEL SEALS?
Dave Folsom has identified some common problems that he sees in his shop. One of those is leaking rear wheel seals. This often happens because the rear end vent hole is plugged. A plugged vent hole allows pressure to build within the rear end when the air inside the rear end heats up. This pressure pushes the rear end oil out through the seals. This leakage can get on the brake linings which can affect braking.
This vent can be found in two places depending on the year of the car or truck. It can be found on the axle housing or on the torque tube, usually about half way between the transmission and the differential housing.
Fourth of July Picnic
Dave and Diane Haddock
Everyone is invited to Lake Forest Park for the 4th! Carol and Lee Folsom will be here to greet
you in our new venue for the holiday. We have 1.5 acres, so lots of room to roam. We will pro-
vide hot dogs, buns and condiments as well as lemonade for all. Please bring a salad, side or des-
sert to share. Also, bring a chair. We will gather on the deck and near the creek we will have a
small fire to roast marshmallows (and stay warm by if necessary) We have a covered area if need-
ed. Arrive after 12:30. Google maps will provide accurate directions or use the directions below.

Our annual Strawberry Social celebrating a tra-
dition started by Gail Darby many years ago will
take place at Perrigo Park, 9011 196th Avenue NE,
Redmond.
We will begin serving at around 7:00 P.M. The

by Jim Darby. Don and Sallie Comstock will bring
the strawberries, whipped cream, bowls, spoons,
etc. Bring your own beverage if desired.
Please drive your Chevy and
enjoy some strawberry

Puget Sound Region VCCA General Meeting Minutes
May 19, 2014
Call To Order: The May meeting was called to order at 7:25 PM. There were 17 members present.
Opening: The meeting began with a report from the group on the Route 66 Tour. They were at the South Rim of The Grand
Canyon. The phone conversation was broadcast through a speaker so all could hear. Those on the tour were: the Barkers,
Comstocks, Helgesons, Olsons, and Jim Darby.
All reported that the tour was going well and that everyone was having a grand time. Jim Seiber who was present at the
meeting filled us in on the brake problem Bill Barker had with his ’66 Corvette and its resolution.
Treasurer’s Report: There was no report as Treasurer Sallie Comstock was at the Grand Canyon at the time.
Tours and Activities: Al Howe gave Rod Schein’s report on upcoming events:
* The next meeting will be the Strawberry Social on June 28. There are no more meetings at the school until September.
* Al Howe will be driving a couple being married in his ’55 Chevy on Sunday, May 25.
* The Ballard Parade was successful once again.
* Seattle Swap Meet: Ana reported on the club’s volunteer group for the event. A photo of those from the Club was
taken. This is Ana’s last year managing our participation. A new coordinator will have to be selected for 2015. A new
Swap Meet Manager will take over the swap meet for the V/8 Club next year. It will be Dave White who is also one
of our members.
* The Garage Nite is in June, not May as listed in the last TC.
* Al Howe reported on the NW Meet. A planning meeting will be held at the Johnson’s June 1.
* The VCCA National Four Cylinder Tour is in Decorah, Iowa the last week of June. Puget Sound Region members
planning on attending include Al and Kathy Howe, Dick Jones and grandson Alex, Dennis and Gerri Johnson, Dan and
Sheri Johnson, Ken Beach, Tom Meleo and Jim Farris with daughters Theresa & Rosemary and grandson Will.
Program: Dick Jones presented a program on his recent trip with Gisela to New Zealand and Australia.

Serial Numbers on Your Car!
So where do you look for a serial number? I
helped a friend from South Dakota find a
1948 Chevrolet Coupe in Portland about two
years ago. Nothing seemed to be amiss until
he tried later to sell it to a guy in Nebraska.
Yup, the serial number on the title did not
match the numbers on the door post. I called
our VCCA technical advisors for ‘48’s who
said the number should be in front of the seat
on the passenger side floor panel. Nope, not
there. At least he couldn’t find it. So now I’m trying to find out what went wrong and if it is not a le-
gitimate title, who will make it right? Just a word to the wise ….. be cautious when buying and selling
vehicles. Check it out first.
Good luck as you tour this summer and please be careful!
