There have been many sad storiesamong the news headlines over thepast month: Ukraine, the kidnap ofhundreds of Nigerian girls, floods inBosnia, continuing chaos in Syria toname but a few.

But there has been one verypositive story:

This story has struck a chord withso many. Stephen’s selfless energyin the middle of an unimaginablesituation has been inspirational.

His campaign at the end of histragically short life has accomplishedso much:

The hope that the research hehas made possible will find a curefor cancer.

The reality that his campaign hasgiven real meaning to and in some

sense made sense of the cruel wayhis life was ended.

The memories of him that willloom large in the minds of his familyand friends and also in the minds ofall those who supported his cause.

In a sense his legacy transcendsdeath, part of him will live on inmemory but also in very practicalways - the money he has raised willmake a difference to all those whoare beneficiaries of the teenagecancer trust.

Jason Manford, the comedianwho helped to champion Stephen'sfundraising, paid tribute to theteenager as being "the mostinspiring person I've ever met".

"The reason we took to him sopassionately was because he wasbetter than us, he did something thatnone of us could even imagine doing.

"In his darkest hour he selflesslydedicated his final moments toraising millions of pounds forteenagers with cancer.

"Some of Stephen's words willstay with me and others forever andthey are words to live by - 'life isn'tmeasured in time, it's measured inachievements'."

And that really is a legacy tocontemplate and be inspired by.

We enjoyed a fabulous lunchtogether being made to move tableshalfway through to enable us tomeet more friends- much enjoyed byeveryone. Our final experience wasa wonderful boat ride along thecanals with informative commentary.

Leybourne'sSongs of PraiseLeybourne Ss Peter & Paul's was unveiledin all its newly-painted splendour lastmonth with a Songs of Praise serviceorganised by Friends of Leybourne Church.

The well-attended service, modelledon the popular BBC TV programme, wasa double celebration of the Church'sredecoration and of the fifth anniversaryof the launch of the Friends.

For many weeks, church services

had been conducted amongst scaffolding, dust and wet plaster as the inside of thebuilding was transformed. The wallshave been limewashed and the ceilingpainted a radiant yellow, representinglight, purity, love and benevolence.

The service demonstrated thisChristian symbolism as the host for theevening, TV presenter Jan Leeming,

Yes, summer is upon us now thatJune has arrived. Ok, summerdoesn’t really officially start untilJune 2, but I’m sure no-one willcomplain if I start it a little early! Thedays are warmer and filled with thecolour and scent of flowers. Saladcrops can be harvested this monthand strawberries appear inabundance. June is the time toreally enjoy the garden as the long, warm days and light eveningsprovide more time for leisure andrelaxation.

However, it’s not all easy going,

along with all the flourish andsplendour during this month, weedsare thriving too, so keep on top ofthe situation. Hoe on warm daysand leave the weeds on the surfaceto wither and die in the sun. Anotherconstant task around the garden atthis time of year is deadheading -removing spent flowers fromcontainers, pots, hanging baskets, beds and borders and feeding theplants occasionally with liquid feed.Deadheading diverts energy fromproducing seed into producing newflowers, so it’s a good thing all

round.At this time of year

there are other tasks thatcan be done to improvethe garden in the longterm; and with a bit ofsun on your back theydon’t seem so hard tocontend with.

If you haven’t donethe `Chelsea chop` onyour late-flowering andtall perennials then

Sumer isSummer means lots of work in the garden, but also lotsof enjoyment, writes Adam McKay.

14

Icumen Inyou’d better get them done, pronto.By cutting back Sedums, Heleniumsand the like by roughly half will keepthem shorter, make them flower alittle later and best of all give themmore flower heads! To extend theflowering season why not `chop` halfof them which will also give youdifferent heights in your border aswell as flowers over a longer period.

If you have any topiary then thisis the month to re-shape it. But try totrim it on a dull day(it’s England so,there will be quite afew to choose from!)as this will stop thefreshly cut leaves fromscorching in the strongsunshine.

Shrubs are the bones of

the garden border and we are allguilty of letting them grow awayfreely until they outgrow their space. But, June is a prime time to dealwith this problem.

All early flowering shrubs(Deutzia, Philadelphus, Weigela andForsythia) which are all deciduouscan be pruned now by removing thisyear’s flowering limbs back to astrong shoot or stem. Be brave, but

try and keep it in anelegant shape, not abox or ball shape. Keepit natural looking.

Then there are theevergreen shrubs, which in my opinionshould be banned from

small gardens are they cast toomuch shadow and (again in myopinion) are pretty boring all yearround. This also is a good time tohard-prune them to improve shape.

Again be brave andprune back to a strongshoot or stem.

Doing this now willalso restrict rootdevelopment thus keepingits growth in check forthe rest of the year.

Any hard pruningthat is done shouldbe followed by a goodwatering and a thickmulch around itsbase to help reduce

stress of the plant.June is a lovely month to be in

the garden even if there is a little bitof work to do. So, go on, get outthere and enjoy it!

The morning of a job interview. The five minutes before anexam. Most of us have prayedat some time.

Anyone can pray at random –but what would happen if wedecided to pray every day?

Like any friendship – it growsthrough good communication.

Prayer is simple. You can pray inside your head or out loud. On the bus, athome or in a café.

Ask God now to help you get started. You could pray the following:

“God if you are there – and I’m not sure that you are – but if you are, I want toget to know you. I don’t want to kid myself about it, I want to really know you.”

Praying isn’t just for the religious. Most people admit to praying at some timein their life even if they have given up on it later.

Jesus prayed. He seemed to have access to God like no one else. He wasalways doing miracles and teaching about life. But he also spent much timein prayer and taught about it. What did he say?

www.trypraying.org

19

He said that faith was a crucial ingredient. He always responded to faith. Onone occasion he said, ‘Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it and it will be yours.’ Prayer is not simplyabout the words we say it’s about what we are thinking on the inside.

Jesus also said that forgiveness was important. ‘And whenever you standpraying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them so that yourFather in heaven may forgive you’ Forgiveness is a kind of currency. If weuse it in our relationship with others then we will have it in our relationshipwith God.

Another ingredient is to keep going. He gave many illustrations about this: awoman keeping on at a magistrate until he gave her her rights ; a friendbanging on the door at midnight until he got what he needed.

It seems that praying for somethinguntil we get it is what God invites usto do. Giving up at the first set back isnot an option. But we have to be willingto accept God’s answers when theycome which of course can be ‘yes’,‘no’ or ‘wait’.

The foundation for all prayer isknowing God in a personal way. That is what Jesus has madepossible.

Local Pharmacy FightGoes to ParliamentLeybourne Parish Council has askedlocal MP Sir John Stanley to help fight"the injustice" of a decision to blockplans for a pharmacy in the village.

Parish Council chairman Bob Ulphcalled on the MP for Tonbridge & Mallingto raise the matter in Parliament, to fightwhat it called the "restrictive practice",that allows existing shops to block anynew pharmacies opening.

In February, after lobbying from Boots,Paydens and Tesco, the local Primary CareTrust upheld an earlier ruling, sayingthat Leybourne didn't need a pharmacybecause there were others within 2.5miles that residents could drive to.

In a letter to the MP, Mr Ulph saidthe Primary Care Trust was inconsistentin its policy. He pointed out thatpermission had been granted to newpharmacies in Maidstone despite thembeing less than a mile apart. The

decisionleavesLeybourneas the onlylocalcommunitywith adoctor'ssurgery butnodispensingchemist, MrUlph said inthe letter.

Sir Johnwas urged to raise "this restrictivepractice" with ministers and to table amotion in Parliament "against this unfaircartel practice which in normalcircumstances would be subject toinvestigation by the CompetitionCommission."
