Our July 5 th meeting is upstairs because of the July 4-6 Rummage Sale at the Community Center, organized and staffed by our indefatigable Dean and Sharon Crider and their intrepid volunteers. You may not be aware that each year for many years, Dean and Sharon have donated the entire proceeds of the Rummage Sale (Thousands of $$ per year) to the LCIA. Looking ahead, the 4th of July Parade is not to be missed. Saturday, July 12th is Dumpster Day for the disposal of items from DE-cluttering your cabin. Last year, History Nite focused on the first pioneers and logging at Lake Cavanaugh prior to the platting of vacation homes in the late 1940s. This year, we focus on memories and photos from the late 1940s and early 1950s. Please contact History Nite Chair, Bill Pugh, if you have photos and recollections of the early days from 1946-1954.The Fire Department Auxiliary will again be providing the refreshments. I’m hoping you are reading this June newsletter before the July 4th Holiday. At least that’s the hope and plan. Last July, Father Jack O’Leary, Kurt Wold and Tom Kelly led us through the beginnings of civilization at the Lake. A “standing room only” audience learned about life in the ghost town of Alpine. We viewed a fascinating slide show describing life in the logging camps that dotted the shores during the first three decades of the 20th century. So, what happened next? How did the Lake start developing into such a wonderful retreat and haven for so many lucky families—the original “vacation” property owners from the late 1940s and early 1950s? I have my own early memories of the Lake -- living in a log cabin on North Shore Drive with my folks from 1954-1955 before we moved near Anacortes so I could attend kindergarten. Turns out that I was a piker compared to Ron Carlson, who had reached the ripe age of 16 when his parents purchased their place in the late 1940’s. So, on Saturday, July 19th at 7 pm, we will host another History Night at the Lake featuring Original Owners and their stories from the 40’s and 50’s. Picture this: no power, no telephone, no indoor plumbing, a handful of Lake Residents and a one lane dirt road with turnouts. It was a blast! Come to the Community Center on Saturday evening, July 19th to hear the stories, see the pictures and be entertained!

Dumpster Day -

July 12th Dennis Katte

Dumpster Day is sponsored by LCIA as a community service. It affords quick and easy disposal of most anything without having to haul it to Mount Vernon or Seattle, possibly saving quite a few trips. It’s as inexpensive as a county landfill and it saves hauling expenses of gas and mileage on your vehicles not to mention your time. But it is not a free service, and we have to charge for it. Last year, our cost was $1,130 for the dumpsters and tonnage fees. “Dumpster Day” will be one day only, Saturday, July 12th. Last year’s downsizing to one day worked well. Hours will be from 9am-5pm, and we will have two dumpsters at the West end of the Fire Station. The fees will be the same as last year-- cars - $20; mini vans, SUV’s, small pickups, trailers - $35; and large loads- $50. For comparison, the minimum rate at a King County transfer station is $22. We are prohibited by Waste Management from accepting major appliances, barrels, weed killers, insecticides, lead acid batteries, liquid paints, tires, TV sets, monitors, computers, fluorescent lamps and ballasts, oils, antifreeze, propane tanks, railroad ties and empty aerosol cans (if you remove the bottom of the can we can take it). However, King, Snohomish and Skagit counties have recycling programs at their transfer stations and will accept tires, large appliances, and those with refrigerant. They also have hazardous waste sites.

Linda Lemke

The 2014 Fire Department Open House and annual Pancake Breakfast was, once again, a huge success! Over 500 adults and children were served! A special thank you to Lenore Crutchfield (chairperson), Auxiliary members, families and friends who spent many hours helping. The many lake logo items were literally flying off the shelves as everyone filled their arms with goods to purchase! A big thank you to Sue Phillips (chairperson) and the "Design Team" for their hard work. Everyone was pleased with the beautiful new “fish theme” raffle quilt, as was apparent by the many tickets that were sold. There will be more chances to purchase raffle tickets this summer at the 4th of July Parade, Fun Run and Craft Fair, or contact Linda Lemke at 360-422-6453 to get your tickets. All proceeds from this quilt sale go to the Oso Relief Fund! Again this year, the children were excited to receive the bright red fireman hats. 100 helmets were distributed to every child who wanted one. A Little Auxiliary History: Our constitution and By-laws were adopted at Lake Cavanaugh on April 6, 1981 and amended June 11, 2005. Irene Schroers is the only founding person left in the auxiliary. The pancake breakfast by the auxiliary began in the early 70's and was held on the opening day of fishing season. Around 1999, when the lake became open to fishing year round, the auxiliary decided there was the potential for more participation over Memorial Day week-end, so they changed the date. Since that time, we consistently serve 500 or more for breakfast. Also, in 1999, after the store closed, it was decided to start selling logo shirts. We started with just tee-shirts, not knowing how well we could do. We now have a great selection of merchandise chosen by our "design team." The quilt making started around 2001! We have made and raffled over 10 different quilts. There are currently 31 auxiliary members who continue with these many activities which all adds up to wonderful support for our fire department.

Lake Water Quality Report – June 2014

Algae Blooms You have probably noticed that we've had algae in the lake during the last month. As I write, there is still some out there. This is not a condition that we normally have this early in the summer. In the past they have usually dissipated in several days, but not this time. This stuff we have now is called Volvox. We've seen it in past years. Fortunately it is not of the potentially toxic blue-green variety. The occurrences of algae blooms has been steadily increasing. I even observed one in the middle of last winter. I don't quite know what to make of it. I tested the water for nitrates and phosphates last summer, but the levels were very low, too low to explain the increase in algae. I'll test for them again this summer. The health department considers the presence of algae to be a normal condition. They will get involved if a significant surface mat develops and persists for some length of time. They will then have it tested by the state, as they have no facility for doing the tests themselves. A single test costs $200 . . . another reason for them to drag their feet.

Latest Water Test Results The most recent round of measurements, taken on June 11, 2014, are summarized in the figure below. The blue line in the graph is a plot of water temperature vs depth. One can see that three distinct depth layers, typical of summer, have already formed: the warmer surface layer, a transitional mid-depth layer, and a bottom layer. The surface layer is 100% saturated with oxygen with a neutral 7.0 pH level; these numbers indicate healthy water conditions. The deep water layer has a similar oxygen level, but a much more acidic pH level of 6.5. The maximum depth of Secci disc visibility is 20 feet. This is less than usual because of the presence of algae.

A series of 10 water samples were taken from around the lake along the shoreline in two feet of water one foot below the surface. These samples were analyzed for the presence of fecal coliform. The test results are tabulated below. The number of colonies per 100 milliliters of water ranged from zero to eleven. These are considered acceptable numbers, will below the 100 colonies per 100 milliliters upper limit for permitting water sports.

The meeting was called to order at 10:00 am by President Chris Kane. He introduced the officers and trustees, all of whom were present except Barbara Busby. Minutes from the August 31, 2013 LCIA general membership meeting were approved, based on a summary by Gary Duvall, who made full minutes available for those who wanted them. A copy of the minutes is also on the www.lakecavanaugh.info Web site. The financial report was presented by Treasurer Robert Getz, and was approved. For 2013 total inflow was $51,198.40, including a transfer from closing out the building fund. There were $18,912.52 in expenses. For 2014 year to date there have been $2,470.77 in income; $3,141.76 in expenses, and a $43,893 balance. There were 282 members last year, about 65% of Lake Residents, and 100 so far this year, but the membership year is just beginning. The President gave a presentation on the 2014 goals of the LCIA. The seven goals are listed in the newsletter, and a few were highlighted, including encouraging younger family members to join in an “associate” member category. An idea was to market this at the 4th of July Parade and Fun Fest. The President summarized volunteer and participation opportunities, including communications, landscaping, community center, community activities, etc. The President gave the LCCC (community center) report, in light of Barbara Busby being out of town, and mentioned upcoming events, which are listed on the Web site. Jean Miller gave the fire commissioners report and introduced commissioners Dave Searing and Larry Hawk, and some of the volunteers. There was a reminder to change batteries in smoke detectors and to put house numbers visibly on the road and end of docks. Volunteers were encouraged. The Fire Department Auxiliary pancake breakfast is tomorrow. Cathy Katte gave the crime report, from the county sheriff; and one can email Ron at [email protected] for details. The sheriff recommends inventory and marking valuables, and crime watch stickers. The county, DNR, and governmental report was given by Chris Kane. Gary Duvall gave the report on planned revisions to the Shorelines Management Act, which is a high priority for the LCIA. This has been discussed at prior LCIA member meetings and LCIA Board meetings, and the consensus is against any additional restrictions on development. See http://www.skagitcounty.net/planningandpermit/html/shoreline_toc.htm for details. The Board presented a proposed resolution opposing additional regulation, which was read, and was approved by a unanimous show of hands, with no opposed. Vickie Sanders led a discussion of communications among residents, including the Facebook page and Web site and newsletter. A suggestion was made to add Twitter. Larita Humble presented a concept for landscaping around the community center, which had been discussed in general at a prior meeting. There was a drawing and a budget presented, for a total amount of $15,000, plus hiring help for ongoing maintenance. There were a number of questions and comments, including that the design should have low maintenance plants and be easy to maintain. Mick Stenmen mentioned that he has knowledge of the lot lines, and will help in marking them. Under new business, there was a request for the LCIA to fund the 4th of July Fireworks show. Insurance and liability concerns were raised. No action was taken. There was a thanks for the approximately $7,000 raised for the Oso relief fund at the LCIA and Fire Auxiliary dinner event in April. The rummage sale will be July 4-6. Volunteers are needed to bring sandwiches. The Dumpster Day is July 12th, and a volunteer is needed to be there to accept the items. As to New Business, Tom Wolff requested that the LCIA consider subsidizing the fireworks show. The next meeting will be July 5th at 10 am. The meeting was adjourned at about 11:40. Minutes prepared by Gary Duvall, Secretary LCIA.
