This is a model of a B-25.

A good lunch was enjoyed by all.

Jim and Aurilie Metcalf hosted a tour of the Air Museum in Paso Robles on May 18th. Jim is a retired Air Force Lt. Colonel, who, unlike the majority of people in the Air Force today, was a pilot. Trained as a fighter pilot during WW II, Jim has flown a variety of fighters, bombers, and transports, and concluded his career flying a slow, and very vulnerable spotter plane not very high above the jungles of Viet Nam. Jim was the perfect host for this fun event and it will come as a surprise to many that the museum also has a collection of race cars and British sports cars!

Jim Metcalf Leads DriveBy Larry Long

Our May Paradise British Car Club outing was really special. Jim and Aurilee Metcalf led us on a very pleasant drive to Paso Robles on May 18th where we visited the Estrella Warbirds Museum. I had never been there, and I’m sure that some of the others in the group had not been there before. What a surprise! I was amazed at the collection of memorabilia from our fighting forces from the early wars, world War II, through the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. The World War II collection is very complete and well organized. I was not only impressed with the amount of material in the collection, but also the quality of their displays. Naturally, since this is a warbirds museum, most of the memorabilia is centered around military aircraft and the support thereof.

Jim pointed out several of the aircraft that he flew during the later years of WWII. I’m sure that he has a lot of stories to go along with his time in these aircraft.

Jim forgot his wallet (his excuse), so we all had to take up a collection to buy him and Aurilee tickets to enter the museum; it was a close vote as to whether we should fund his visit, but finally decided that he and Aurilee should stay together. We all thought that was a pretty lame excuse but, rather than see him falling over from lack of food, we did the same for their lunches. We promised that the interest rate of the loans would not be too high. If he doesn’t pay us back, he promised that we could have his Healey for a weekend.

Since Jim was concerned that the Highway Patrol would be searching for him, he and Aurliee took off for home, driving down highway 101, probably exceeding the speed limit lest the Highway Patrol catch up with him. The rest of us (Larry and Barbara in their MG TD; Rhonda and Jeff in their MG Midget; and Jan and Gary in their Jaguar) decided to take the long way home and went west on 146 toward Cambria, then to San Luis Obispo. It was a lovely day for a drive; not too hot, but a little on the cool side which made it very pleasant.

Joseph Lucas—Prince of Light

The January Tech Session at Bob Wagner MotorSports was “enlightening” to say the least. Bob’s discussion of “Lucas Electrics” was very informative and dispelled some myths about our LBC’s.

Bob’s first point was that in finding electrical problems do not use a modern digital Multimeter as it can give false voltage readings since it draws so little current. In fact it can often measure “static charge” such as indicating 4 volts when touching the windshield seal rubber on an MGB. Instead the only tool you will normally need is the simple test probe with a 12 volt light bulb. Connect the lead to ground and use the tip to probe wires and connections. A lit bulb shows “Hot” or ~12 volts at the probe tip. Use this to track the circuit from the power source to find faults.

Most electrical problems can be traced to poor connections due to corrosion, particularly at grounds. This is particularly true in our cars that are well over 50 years old. Although the rubber insulation used in most case may harden and crumble the wiring does not wear out, but the ends do. A good way of putting it, other than through accident damage or amateur alterations, most problems occur at the ends, Virtually all ends are fitted with connectors. There are spade connectors, called ‘Lucar’ connectors by Lucas, ‘bullet’ connectors (describing their shape), and ring or eyelet style used on the harness. The eyelet style is usually screw fastened to the body for ‘earth’ or ground connections. As with all connections of this type, the contact area on the body must be clean (bright metal) and the fastener tight.

The spade and bullet type come in ‘male’ and ‘female’ configurations. The female connector being fully insulated is used on the hot or energized wire, and the male, having a considerable bare contact area, is on the load or grounded side of the circuit. When buying spade connectors, buy the best and look for a brand like ‘AMP ’, Quality always pays in the long run. Spade connectors vary in contact size and sleeve diameter to suit different current loads. It also pays to buy the best crimpers and strippers you can afford -avoid the $9.99 jumbo bargain packs! Bullet connectors pose a problem however, unlike spade connectors, which are compatible with ‘Lucar’, the bullets are different. North American bullets do not mate well with Lucas style and should only be mixed for temporary repairs. The Lucas bullet is a nice piece of engineering. especially the crimping pattern. The crimping tool is very expensive and it and the bullets are available from Moss and Abingdon Spares.

If you can solder, the Lucas bullets may be attached that way. If you are not a purist, you can convert a bullet connection to spade style, or salvage a bullet-ended wire of the correct colour code and gauge from a discarded harness. A safe junction with the harness can be made with solder and shrink tubing or with a crimped sleeve connector. Most problems with the bullet connections can be cured by cleaning the male bullet with steel wool, fine sandpaper or your

Dremel with a wire brush. The female sleeve connector may be cleaned with a 17 caliber gun cleaning brush. The female connectors often break with age and they should be replaced. Finally, quality connectors are made of brass with a coating of zinc or similar alloy to improve conductance and retard corrosion. Try to avoid cheaper brass ones, otherwise coat the connectors with a junction paste as used in modern cars. However, we have to remember that all cars of the age of ours, regardless of make, have these kinds of high resistance and low voltage problems. They lurk at the ends of our wiring, and behind things like fuse holders, and in switch contacts. Creative cleaning will restore most devices.

Lucas wiring colour codes are fairly simple, and here are some examples. The main, or background colour, gives the general circuit and the stripe colour adds further information,Color Symbol Function Black B Ground (Earth) Brown N Always hot, Not fused on MGB Yellow Y Instead of Brown on T, MGA Purple P Always hot, fused White W Hot with ignition on, not fused Green G Hot with ignition on, fused Blue U Headlight main, not fused Red R Park/tail lights, not fused Tracer/Color Symbol Function Red/White RW Switch Ground (Earth) Blue/Red UR Headlights, low beam White/Black WB Coil to distributor Green/Red GR Left turn signal feed Green /White GW Right turn signal feed Purple/Black PB Horn feed Green/Black GB Fuel gauge sender feedDept. of Helpful Hints Borrowed from All Over How to avoid crud build-up on Lucas connectors in your T-Series car: RAIL-ZIP TO THE RESCUE BY Roger Marshall with credit to Al Ostend

I read an article in the lntermarque newsletter today and will just report or the article as it can be boiled down to a simple concept.

Al Osterud wrote All About Rail-Zip. Some of you who collect model trains may be aware of this product but Al it to Lucas electrical issues. Made by Pacer Technologies, RailZip is intended to clean tracks and contact points on model railroads.

Al says “I use Rail-Zip on toy train tubular rail track pins, toy train reversing unit contacts, old electrical switches (like antique push button light switches in my 100 year old house), door bell contact points, antique Christmas Tree light bulbs, automotive connectors, automotive fuse holders, and Lucas Electrical systems on a British collector car.” He said mechanic also uses it on electrical connections in anti-lock braking systems in newer cars.

Al says he was struggling with electrical connections on‘67 Rover 2000TC Sports sedan which has Lucas connector’s wall find on MGs. He points out the dangers of trying to pull apart those connections that are covered with crud. Instead he just puts a small drop of Rail-Zip in the connector and lets it sit. The next day he found that everything worked. The Rail-Zip had cleaned and contacts so they made contact again. He goes on to mention several other places he’s used this product with quick success. Sounds like it might be a product worth checking out. I suspect it can be found in model train stores and shops. This helpful advice appeared in the November 1, 2011 issue of the OCTOGRAM newsletter of the MGs of Baltimore

Proven: Little Cars Can Go As Fast As Big CarsBy Larry Long

Well, it happened again! John Klingensmith asked me on Friday if we would like to take a drive out to Jalama Beach on Sunday. And once again, I said Yes. (And I again checked with Barbara to see if it was OK!) And once again I sent an email to the club to see if anyone would like to join us and we had a couple of takers for the invitation.

Rhonda and Jeff along with their son Andy and daughter, Cathy, came along driving their MG Midgets. John drove his Jaguar so he could see how fast he could navigate the curves on the road to Jalama Beach. Dennis and Mary drove their supercharged Morris so they could keep up with John. Barbara and Larry took their modern MG, the MGB, driving last in the group so they wouldn’t hold anybody up.

Once again, all I can say is that we had a lovely time. We took the leisurely way to Jalama, up Harris Grade Road and connecting with Highway 1 at Lompoc. Nobody slid off the road on the way up the hill and down the other side. I must be getting older because I found it difficult to keep up with those little Midgets! A few miles after connecting with Highway 1, we came to Jalama Road. The 14 miles of road from highway 1 to Jalama is a superb drive. It was cloudy all the way, but that area is beautiful even with the overcast. It sure is fun driving a sports car on that road. I couldn’t keep up with Andy and Cathy! Boy, those little Midgets can really go!

The store at Jalama Beach hasn’t changed for many, many years. They still offer hot food, so we all ordered and had lunch on their patio. Following that, a few of the more hearty folks took a walk along the beach. Dennis finally had to tackle Mary and Rhonda to make them turn around; they would have continued on to Santa Barbara if he had not stopped them. Barbara and I drove on home since we didn’t do the walk.

And , once again, I’ll tell you that doing these impromptu outings is a pleasure. When you feel like taking a drive or having a picnic, just let the rest of us know and I’m sure that you will have some pleasant folks join you. Or maybe even unpleasant folks; who knows! It will still be fun.

*********Flash********

This just in!!

Paradise British Car Club Brings Home the Gold The Paradise Car Club was well represented at the San Luis County Hospice Concourse d’Elegance held Sunday, May 9th, at Madonna Inn. I think this is the fourth or fifth year for this event, and the second time it

was held at this venue after being moved from Avila Beach. Tom Tallone was there with his beautiful light blue MGA, and Larry took his 1933 MG J2. Both were entered in the British Car class. I think there were around 14 cars in this class, including a beautiful MG TC, a fantastic 1958 Bentley, and several other really great looking cars.

I don’t know about Tom, but I was really surprised when I found a card on my windshield stating that I was to be given an award. Tom received a card, as well, but I was not surprised about that. In all, there were six of us from the class that were presented awards. Tom was presented a trophy representing third place for the class. I was shocked to find that I was at the back of the line as our class lined up for the drive through the crowd watching the trophy presenters, and more shocked when I was awarded the First Place trophy for the best British Car. My face still hurts from smiling so hard as I passed by the cheering crowd.

This is a wonderful event. There were a few from the club there, including the Cardinals and Ken Palmer. The rest of you should plan to attend next year; this year was better than last year, and the event promises to become a major event for the Central Coast. By Larry Long

We all know that MG’s are really fun to drive and great to look at. As you can see from the picture to the right, sometimes there is a bit of a problem with driving them.

The smoke you see is an indication of a well aged car.

Some of our outings that are the most fun are those that are impromptu events. Such was the case when John Klingensmith asked me if I would like to take a drive out to Pozo on Sunday, May 26th . Naturally, I said Yes. Then I checked with Barbara to see if that was OK. I then sent an email out to the members of the Club to tell them of our plans. We were delighted when Jan and Gary joined us, along with Tom and Suzanne Tallone.

I should tell you that this was an outing of the Southwest Orcutt and Lompoc Touring Society (SWOLTS), a recently formed branch of the Paradise British Car Club. Since there is no need to drive a British car when on an outing with this group, Jan and Gary drove their Smart Car and John, with Suzanne, drove the Corvette. Larry and Barbara stuck with British, driving their Jaguar. And we met up with Tom and Suzanne in Santa Margarita driving a big white something or other. That comprised the group that then headed to Pozo.

There were very few cars on the road to Pozo, so we had a very pleasant drive. I was impressed with the speed and handling of the Smart car; for a little car, it sure can go fast! The maneuvering around all the curves is, I’m sure, due to the expertise of the driver, Jan.

The saloon at Pozo was open for lunch, so we did just that. I have to tell you that the cuisine they have there is really great; and the food isn’t bad either. We all enjoyed what we had—the hamburgers are really good—and the service was top notch. We sat outside at a table that was in the shade, but, for some strange reason, after 15 minutes, it was in the sun. I was like magic! We moved the table to the shade, but after a while it was in the sun again! I think the table must have been on rollers or something. Strange things happen in Pozo! Do yourself a favor and drive out there someday for lunch; I guarantee that you will enjoy the drive and the food.

After lunch, Tom led us on the back roads toward the east. He and Suzanne broke away to head toward Creston and home while the rest of

headed back to Santa Margarita and home. John and Suzanne stopped at Arroyo Grande to check out the strawberry festival.

This was another fun day in the life of us British car owners and demonstrated, once again, that we don’t have to have months of planning for a fun time with people we really enjoy (at least Barbara and I enjoyed everybody; I can’t speak for the rest of the group!). If any of you have a suggestion for such an event on the spur of the moment, do it! Send out an email or call us and I’m sure that you will find others that would be more than happy to join you.

One final note: Willie Nelson, one of Jim’s favorite musicians, is going to be at the Pozo Saloon on the 18th of August. That is our anniversary, so Barbara and I decided to go see him. The Fishers and Jan and Gary are joining in. So if any of the rest of you are interested, go to Pozo.com and you will find information about Willie’s visit there. Let us know and we can caravan and have dinner somewhere after the show. It is at 4:00 PM, and will be hot—there is very little shade, and, remember: for some reason, the shade moves away after a while. Strange!
