DISCOVERING UK

The sun in this country is quite shy, but if you are lucky and you have one weekend of good weather...why not go to the beach? I’ve been one weekend in Brighton and I encourage you to go because you have really nice things to see and do.

You can go there by bus with Megabus to London and after another bus or train to Brighton, or by train to London King Cross and afterwards another train from St.Pancras International (2min walking from KX) to Brighton. I recommend the train just because if not you will arrive really tired and if you book in advance is not so expensive (£24 with railcard).

Brighton is one of the most cultural cities in Europe. You can notice how the city’s atmosphere surrounds you in its streets and its people. Brighton entertainment offers a lot of Festivals, galleries, museums, film, nightlife, comedy and theatre.

If you like Indian style (or not), there is an extraordinary seaside palace: The Royal Pavilion (picture on the right). It´s one of the most exotic buildings in the British Isles, and even though it´s quite expensive for our budgets (£10) the Palace really is a must see on any visit to the city. Audio guides are available in English, Spanish, German, and other languages for free to all visitors. It will help you to understand the weird and amazing history of the Royal Pavilion. Anyway, if you don’t want to expend this £10 you can lie down on the grass while you admire the beauty of the palace from the outside (this is free!).

If you’re looking for great shopping, I recommend you North Laine, a small bohemian area. Shopping there, is a real mix of ethnic, exotic and funky. You never know what can you see there, but I’m sure it will surprise you greatly.

Another option in the city and the most common is (of course) go to the beach and the pier. I think this is the most common reason to go there, but you should know a couple of things: first of all, there’s no sand, but pebbles (stones). It´s not uncomfortable but it is quite difficult to walk without shoes. The second one is that...it´s completely full of people, so to find a quiet place is almost impossible. The positive part is to do barbecues on the beach! So don’t hesitate to buy one instant bbq, some meat and bread! And afterward relax on one of the chairs that you can find on the Brighton Pier (as shown above)

Are you ready to go?

From the 23th to 27th of April it was the “Art Week” in Thorner School. The students work hardly every day during the school year so Mss Byrne decided to organise one week in which the activities for the kids were only crafts.

The class where I am is “Ash class” and it’s in Reception. They are four and five years old and they love making crafts. Our activities for that week were about the four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter.

The first day, on Monday, we worked the SPRING starting the day reading the book “ The tiny seed“. The proposed activities were making flowers baskets with different kinds of papers and stickers, looking real flowers and painting them on a card, using the computers to make fireworks and some writing. Besides, the children could play with whatever they wanted and we could find some of them dressing up or playing with barbies. The second day, on Tuesday, we worked the SUMMER with a special book; a holiday scrap book from Mss Byrne son. It was

about the holidays they had in the summer of 2010. The children enjoyed reading the book and looking the pictures. The activities they made were making suns with paints and wool, making a poster with different flowers, making the rainbow with different materials such as paints, papers balls and glitter, painting symmetrical butterflies, and some writing too. Besides, they had some free play.

The third day we worked the AUTUMN. The teacher read the book “Percy and the park keeper“ and explained the different activities for the day. They were dressing a bear with autumn clothes such as raincoat, rain

boots, hat and umbrella; making patterns with autumn symbols, making leaves with seeds, some writing and making bakery! We made bird nests using hot chocolate and cereals. That was the best one for them.

The fourth day we worked the WINTER starting the day reading the book “Laura´s Christmas star“. The activities for the day were drama, making snowmen with soap, some writing and painting some tiles with winter symbols.

The last day we made pottery to make symbols about all the seasons: butterflies and flowers for the spring, icecreams and suns for the summer, hedgehogs and rabbits for autumn, and snowmen for winter. Can you recognise them in the picture? It’s a mystery where they are!

It was a great week for children and teachers, although I have to say teachers finished more tired than normally. For me it was a lovely experience because I could enjoy with every child, sometimes helping them and sometimes just playing with them.
