NEW FACES AT THE CAMP

Hi! I’m Jesse and I am a recent graduate of Appalachian State University with a degree in Recreation Management. I am an avid climber but I also love anything involving the outdoors. If it involves fun games, mud, and bugs, you can count me in! I am super excited to be a part of Camp Lake James and I can’t wait to meet everyone.

Hi, my name is Daniel Niwinski. I am a recent graduate of Appalachian State University. I majored in Recreation Management with a minor in Psychology. I was vice president of the men’s Ultimate Frisbee team at Appalachian State and that is my passion, so if anyone is interested in throwing frisbee talk to me! I was born and raised in Asheville, NC. I am excited to be here at Camp Lake James and I look forward to meeting all of you!

Hi! My name is Mary Elizabeth Ellis, or MEE for short. I grew up in Nebo and come from a very large and hectic family with four younger brothers and three sisters. Although I attended NC State last year, this coming school year I will attend Western Carolina in order to pursue my degree in Forensic Science. My hobbies include reading, hiking, kayaking, horseback riding, and swimming. I am very excited to spend my summer at Camp Lake James!

NATURE NOTES: RED WOLFWestern North Carolina has deemed 2012 the year of the Red Wolf!! In order to bring more attention to these magnificent creatures, we are making them our June Nature Notes, so we can learn a little bit about what is being done in WNC to rehabilitate the population.

Red wolves were once a plentiful population in the south eastern United States, however, currently there are only 300 left in the world, and only 100 of those are left in the wild. The Red Wolf is no longer found in WNC. The only ones left in the wild in NC are found at the Alligator River National Wild Refuge on the East Coast of NC. Should the Red Wolf successfully be reintroduce to the wild in WNC, they would not have a negative effects on humans. Like their cousin the Grey Wolf, the Red Wolf is very shy and avoids human contact instead of being aggressive.

The Red Wolf can range in colors from brown, to grey, to red, but the distinguishing features of this animal are the creamy chest and front legs. If you would like to learn more, you can visit the WNC Nature Center in Asheville. They have a mating pair, Rufus and Angel, living in captivity which had a litter of one pup in 2009, Mayo. That pup has now been introduced to her future potential mate, Phoenix. This would be a great learning experience for the family to get out and see some nature!
