Do you know how far the apple in your kitchen traveled before you picked it up at the grocery store? According to the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, apples in American grocery stores

typically travel 1,726 miles before reaching your kitchen! Just think about the fuel needed to transport produce like this across the country or across borders. Also think about the pollution generated by the vehicles carrying this produce. An apple a day may keep the doctor away but the fumes accompanying it will definitely hurt us!

The impact on the environment is one issue, but we also have to worry about preservatives that are used to keep this apple nice and crispy during its very long journey to your grocery store. To keep produce fresh during the long haul across continents and oceans, produce companies have to use chemical preservatives. It is well documented that preservatives are hazardous to human health.

So what can we do? Well, you can try your best to buy local produce whenever possible. Since produce from your local farms are traveling very short distances there is less pollution created in their transport. There is also less packaging and processing involved which also helps to lessen the amount of garbage we put into the environment and ourselves!

It really is enjoyable to mix up your food shopping routine by purchasing your fresh produce and meats at your local farmers’ market. In many cases you can negotiate prices (which is fun). Also fellow shoppers are generally in a happier frame of mind when they’re perusing farmer’s booths than when they’re steering a shopping cart through crowded aisles at the grocery store.

Allyson Merrifield will be a senior at Bonners Ferry High School this coming year. She is a three sport athlete and plays volleyball, basketball and track. Basketball season is her favorite season and Mr. Cowley is her

favorite teacher. She is most excited about the summer because of open gym. Going to Smokie Acres and camping is one of her favorite things to do in the summer. King crab is her dinner of choice.

Mat Kramer is a sophomore at the Bonners Ferry High School. He plays a defense tackle in football and plays first base in baseball. He enjoys skiing, so winter is one of his favorite seasons. He is excited for summer because he likes to ride mountain bikes with his friends. Ice cream is his favorite food. In the summer, Mat and his family do a lot of camping and he is looking forward to that this summer as well! Mr. Bonnell is his favorite teacher.

People are usually under the impression that the body receives sufficient minerals and vitamins through their diet. However, this is not always true. It is sometimes very important to use health supplements

Some people use energy bars as health supplements. However, though this is good for athletes who burn lots of calories, they can turn out to be additional calories to the average person!

A generation ago, dentures and bridgework were all too common among U.S. seniors. Today, according to a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Americans are keeping their natural

teeth longer. In part, seniors can thank endodontists, the dentists who specialize in performing root canal treatment and saving natural teeth.

Endodontists’ advanced training and access to cutting-edge technologies allow them to save older teeth that once were considered hopeless. As people age, the canals inside their teeth narrow, making tooth-saving procedures more difficult. Using new technologies, such as ultrasonics and operating microscopes, endodontists can locate even the smallest canals to remove inflamed pulp and nerves and preserve natural teeth. Digital imaging, which is used in place of traditional X-rays to take pictures of teeth, is another tool that significantly increases endodontists’ ability to find the cause of pain in even the narrowest root canal.

“Endodontists are accustomed to working within a very small space,” says Dr. Marc Balson, D.D.S., president of the American Association of Endodontists. “Our background, which includes four years of dental school followed by two to three years of advanced training, allows us to perform root canal treatment efficiently on any patient.”

During root canal treatment, the endodontist removes the inflamed or infected pulp (the soft tissue inside teeth), carefully cleans and shapes the inside of the canal (a channel inside the root), then fills and seals the space. A well done root canal is like a solid foundation in a house - it allows for further restorative work to be done on a tooth with a likelihood of long-term health and stability.

Endodontists’ training also helps them deal with seniors’ special medical needs. The same prescription medications that allow older Americans to lead healthier, more active lives can pose problems when it comes time to undergo dental procedures. Endodontists routinely conduct a thorough assessment of elderly patients’ medical histories in preparation for root canal treatment, so as to avoid harmful drug interactions and safely treat patients with high blood pressure and other chronic conditions.

The most important advantage endodontists offer older patients is experience. On average, endodontists perform 25 root canal treatments each week, while general dentists perform two. This means that seeing an endodontist for root canal treatment is the healthiest way for seniors to avoid dentures, bridgework or artificial implants and preserve their smiles for a lifetime.

The Cafe at the Pearl will open at 1pm featuring a “south of the border” lunch, wine, beer, desserts, and other beverages. The presentation will begin at 2pm at the Pearl Theatre.

June 1 -July 26 - “Summer Yoga at The Pearl”. This summer The Pearl will offer yoga classes taught by Victoria Blake Thompson. Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-6:30pm, Yoga Basics. Fee is $50 for 10 classes or $7 for individual classes. Summer session begins June 19th and concludes July 26th. The 10 class punch cards can be carried over to the fall session which will begin at the end of August. June 28 - “FFA Alumni Meeting”. Everyone is welcome! The meeting will be held at the Fairgrounds Memorial Hall at 6:30pm. We will be discussing the upcoming Agricultural Festival, Alumni membership and how to support and grow the FFA membership. The inspiration for the run begins with Haden Kistler. The 11 year old boy was diagnosed with glioblastoma brain cancer in November 2009. Hayden wanted to be a heavy equipment opera-tor, firefighter and pet cop and he had a heart for people in need. When he saw a woman on crutches struggling with Christmas packages, he insisted that he and his mom stop to help. He was fun loving, loved to joke around and had a great sense of humor. At the time he fell ill, he was building a go-cart. He loved his community and school and would often say, “I love it here Mom. I never want to move.” Outlasting the doctor’s prognosis on two occasions, his will and determination were felt by his com-munity and school, who pulled together to cheer him on. Brain cancer didn’t win...Haden’s spirit will forever hold the trophy!

OOPS?!Jerry was in the hospital recovering from surgery when a nurse asks him how he is feeling.

“I’m OK but I didn’t like the four-letter-word the doctor used in surgery,” he answered.

PHOTOGRAPHERLarry was a photographer for the N.Y. Times, and was scheduled to meet a plane on the runway to take him on a job. “Hit it,” said Larry climbing into the first plane he saw on the runway. The pilot took off, and was soon in the air. “OK,” said Larry, “fly low over the trees over there, I want to take a few pictures.” “What do you mean?” asked the pilot. Larry looked at the pilot and answered a little annoyed, “I need to take some pictures for the N.Y. Times, so please…..” There was a long pause, before the pilot asked in a shaky voice, “you mean you’re not my pilot instructor?”

WHOOPS!Marvin, was in the hospital on his death bed. The family called Marvin’s Preacher to be with him in his final moments. As the Preacher stood by the bed, Marvin’s condition seemed to deteriorate, and Marvin motioned for someone to quickly pass him a pen and paper. The Preacher quickly got a pen and paper and lovingly handed it to Marvin. But before he had a chance to read the note, Marvin died. The Preacher feeling that now wasn’t the right time to read it put the note in his jacket pocket. It was at the funeral while speaking that the Preacher suddenly remembered the note. Reaching deep into his pocket the Preacher said “and you know what, I suddenly remembered that right before Marvin died he handed me a note, and

knowing Marvin I’m sure it was something inspiring that we can all gain from. With that introduction the Preacher ripped out the note and opened it. The note said “HEY, YOU ARE STANDING ON MY OXYGEN TUBE!”

ONE LETTER MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCEAn Illinois man left the snow-filled streets of Chicago for a vacation in Florida. His wife was on a business trip and was planning to meet him there the next day. When he reached his hotel he decided to send his wife a quick email. Unfortunately, when typing her address, he missed one letter, and his note was directed instead to an elderly preacher’s wife whose husband had passed away only the day before. When the grieving widow checked her email, she took one look at the monitor, let out a piercing scream, and fell to the floor in a dead faint. At the sound, her family rushed into the room and saw this note on the screen: Dearest Wife,Just got checked in. Everything prepared for your arrival tomorrow. P.S. Sure is hot down here.
