Montana Food Bank Network Partner Agency News June 2012 5

Clients commonly share that summer is the hardest month for their families. Without access to free or reduced price meals at school, parents have to find ways to further stretch their food budgets. Schools, churches, parks, and community organizations step in each summer to help fill those meal gaps by running a Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) site in their town. This federally funded, state administered nutrition program provides well-balanced free meals to all children under age 18 regardless of income. It helps students stay healthy and ready to engage in a full year of academic learning once school starts in the fall.

This summer, four MFBN partner agencies will be sponsoring sites. The Boys and Girls Clubs of Lewistown, Northern Cheyenne Nation and Havre will be sponsoring summer food sites in their respective towns. The Gallatin Valley Food Bank will be sponsoring seven sites this summer! We are very proud of their efforts to expand access to nutritious meals for kids during the summer and wish them all a very successful summer!

We will also be sending out packets of outreach materials to Partner Agencies in communities with a summer food site. If you receive one of these packets,

Welcome Volunteer Coordinator, Katie Lane!We would like to welcome Katie Lane to the Montana Food Bank Network team. Katie joined MFBN as the new Volunteer Coordinator in the beginning of May. Katie spends much of her free time with her husband and two adorable children, ages 5 and 8. Her sense of humor and friendliness has already been a joy in the office. Katie, a lifelong Montanan, is excited to meet the staff and volunteers of MFBN’s Partner Agencies. Look for Katie on the road as she will be helping to conduct Partner Agency monitorings.

Coming to a town near you...

we would greatly appreciate your help in connecting your clients to this valuable resource!

Last summer, 7,034 students participated daily in the SFSP with over 313,000 lunches served! This year, 89 sponsors have signed up to run 169 Summer Food sites throughout Montana. Check out MFBN’s Summer Food Site Map or contact Courtney McGuire at 721-3825 Ext. 227 see if there is a site in your community.

There are many valuable ways for you and/or your organization to support Summer Food in Montana! Here are just a few ideas: •Help conduct outreach. Post a flyer in your office, talk to families who might be interested, write a newspaper op-ed in support of your local summer food site. •Volunteer to help as a site supervisor or assistant. Help recruit other volunteers. •Plan and run activities for the kids at the site. Donate playground equipment or arts and crafts supplies for activity time. •Donate movie tickets, toys or any other incentive to be raffled off to kids who attend the summer food site. •Help organize transportation to the site for kids who might have difficulties accessing it. •Ask your local coordinator if they have any other suggestions for supporting their program!

For further information, contact Courtney McGuire at 721-3825 Ext. 227 or cmcguire@mfbn.
