JUNE MONTHLY LUNCHEON State of the County given by Sheriff Adrian Garcia

Sponsored by: Shell Federal Credit Union

Reservations are currently being accepted for the chamber’s monthly Membership Luncheon to be held on Thursday, June 26th at Battle-ground Republic Grill.

Our speaker that day will be Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia. Sheriff Garcia will present the State of the County.

Sheriff Adrian Garcia is a native Houstonian and life-long resident of Houston’s “Near Northside”. The youngest of six children, he grew up instilled with the firm values taught by his mother Maria and late father Ignacio to work hard, work honestly, and help others. It was through these guiding principles that Sheriff Garcia chose public service as a profession and became a Houston Police Officer in 1980.

Sheriff Garcia has seen first hand the effects that crime and violence have had in the City of Houston and Harris County. Over his 23-year career in law enforcement he patrolled neighborhoods, investigated violent crime, developed community-policing initiatives, and worked to strengthen the relationship between community residents and law en-forcement. In 1994 Mayor Bob Lanier appointed him as the Houston Police Department’s Liaison to the Mayor’s Anti-Gang Office, and in 1999 Mayor Lee P. Brown appointed him to serve as the Director.

In 2004 he was elected to the Houston City Council and served as a member of several Council committees including Chair of the Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee. He is also determined to provide the direction and re-sources to bring the dedicated men and women of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office into the 21st century.

Sheriff Garcia will accomplish these goals based on the fundamental principles that have guided his career and his life: hard work, honesty, and public service. He credits his wife Monica, daughter Nina, his par-ents and other family members for providing the inspiration to serve. He also thanks the many friends, colleagues, and constituents who have supported and encouraged him.

Can you believe it’s June and summer is here already? Although the calendar still tells us it’s Spring, I think most Southerners would whole-heartedly disagree! We have already begun summer activities and spent time in the pool. Please remember to stay hy-drated and use sunscreen when you are out and about enjoying the summer festivities. Business Expo is one highlight on our chamber calendar. This year’s event proved even more noteworthy due to our excellent attendance both through booth as well as table sponsorships. Jim McInvgale did an excellent job as our Guest Speaker. He is always enter-taining and inspiring. I would like to extend my congratula-tions to Shell Federal Credit Union for being recognized as the Deer Park Chamber’s 2009 Business of the Year. What a well deserved honor! Their hard work and total commitment to both the community and chamber sets this business apart from “ordinary”. They are involved in so many activities and neighborhood enrichment projects. You can be sure that if you are partici-pating in any sort of goings on in the community that Shell Federal Credit Union will be involved. It’s not too early for all you golfers to make reservations for the chamber’s 9th Annual Golf Tournament scheduled for Friday October 9th 2009. In addition to players, we also need volunteers to assist during the tournament itself and sponsors to help support the chamber in this day of fun. If you are available or would like to contribute, please con-tact the chamber at 281-479-1559. So, pencil the date in on your calendar, make your reservations, and begin your practice sessions. See you on the course!

Upward,

Grady West,
