We at your Gran Alacant Advertisercontinue to bring you allof the news from theGran Alacant Councillor,Loreto Cascales, as we havesince May 2005. photo: May 2005

4 .5 million euro to be spent on Gran Alacant. As the magazine was being printed last month,we received a phone call and email from theTown Hall, telling us this sum had been agreed.

They have received a subsidy from theValencian Government a total amount of6.284.145€ to be invested in Santa Pola throughdifferent projects. The Mayor hasdecided that a very high part of this amount ofmoney will be for Gran Alacant for projectsthat will be developed in our area in thefollowing two years.

This means that Gran Alacant will have a totalamount of 1.636.501,22€ from the subsidy ourTown Hall has received from the ValencianGovernment. This amount of money togetherwith the amount of money from the subsidy wehave already received from the CentralGovernment makes the final total sum around4.5 million euros, for projects on GranAlacant.

The future projects to be carried out in GranAlacant are:

1. New situation for the street market of GranAlacant. The council want to move it from CalleCanarias (that is a public street andsometimes bothers the neighbourhood, topublic land where it will not bother anybody). The new street market of Gran Alacant will belocated close to the Sports Hall Centre areaand it will be constructed as a multiuse area

for different activities when the street marketis not working. We have seen the plans for this area. Wherethe old market had 80 stalls, there will now beroom for 300, which it is hoped will make itone of the biggest in the area. It will becompletely fenced in and and have theinstallation of street lights, trees, landscaping, toilets, loudspeakers and a demonstrationarea. This site will not only be used for themarket, but will double up for many otherevents. This will cost 520.501,27 €.

2. Rejuvenating the area that is between theroundabout ofs the post office going to thebeach area, with 1,840sq m of new widerpavements, lighting, trees etc., This will cost229.189,25 €.

3. Cleaning up and fit out the Santa Pola Hilland the environment. This will cost 309.154,72 €.

4. The second phase of closing in andimprovements to the Sports Hall Centre. Thisarea of land is to be expanded to includepadel courts, 2 tennis courts, 5 a side footballpitch, basketball/netball, and an extensiveexercise area. This will cost 577.655,98 €.

The laying of some new pavements is nowunder way. The stretch from the GA Centre tothe school is now in the process of having a

Page 5: June 2009 Gran Alacant Advertiser

TO ADVERTISE IN THE “GRAN ALACANT ADVERTISER” phone: 966 699 167 5

wider pavement constructed. The laying of another long stretch of paving isnow taking place between the GACentre and the Post Office roundabout,

Again, we have seen the plans for thelandscaping alongside the clot. We haveprinted a map showing the area, on pages52/53.

Between the school and the GA Centre, thegrey building there, is to be a supermarket. Onthe opposite side of the road to this, there isanother area now under construction. Herethere will be three petanca courts, a childrens

playground, car parking and more trees andbenches.Another big area for a makeover is the roadthat runs from the post office roundabout, down to the beach. This is one of the oldestareas on the urbanisation and is to have afacelift. The pavements are to be widened,1,840 square metres of newpavement, with the addition of lighting andtrees.

The EL CLOT PATH TO LOS ARENALES that hasbeen closed off is unfortunately under thejurisdiction of the Elche Town Hall, so ofcourse could we not really get a comment fromour Town Hall. Perhaps the only way to getsomething done about it would be to get apetition started and present it to the ElcheTown Hall.

The conversational English Spanish classeswhich we announced to be held at the library, started very well, encouraging 40 people on

its first day.

You just cant win!!!! Some of the owners of thebusinesses at the Carabasi Bar Complex gottogether and paid for a new garden area to beplanted which has made a very pleasant area,............but...........children have been seen inthis area pulling out the irrigationsystem.........If you see anyone vandalizing thegarden, try to discreetly take a photo of them, and if you can email or contact us at themagazine with it, we will inform the localpolice and try to nip it in the bud!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The GA Train contract has been extended upto August to the company already running thisservice. This is until a final decision is madeon who will get the contract for the next year. You will see that we have had an email (page66) about the train prices so we contacted theTrain Owner and the train companies reply wasthat the train/tram of Gran Alacant is first andforemost a TOURISTIC TRAIN - it's main uses areto show the all-year round, short and longterm tourist (both Spanish and foreign) whatGran Alacant is all about, what Gran Alacanthas to offer and how to enjoy all that is GranAlacant. The train is not a public transport, it is a

touristic service covering most of GranAlacant.

All touristic areas (geographical) andservices such as hotels, ski-stations, markets, cafes in touristic spots price according to theseason (low, medium, high).

I hope the writer will continue to enjoy thefun ride, with the friendliest drivers, the catchymusic and great atmosphere of lots of laughson the touristic train of Gran Alacant - and itis only! 1, 50 euros (in Santa Pola, Torrevieja,Benidorm, Caravaca de la Cruz, Santiago deCompostela, Alicante, Sevilla... just to name afew, a ride on a touristic train is between10 - 25 euros a pop.

An elderly Italian man who lived on the outskirts of Rimini, Italy, went to the local church for confession. When the priest slid open the panel in the confessional, The man said: 'Father, during World War II, a beautiful Jewish woman from our neighborhood knocked urgently on my door and asked me to hide her from the Nazis So I hid her in my attic.'The priest replied: That was a wonderful thing you did, and you have noneed to confess that.''There is more to tell, Father... She started to repay me with sexual favours. This happened several times a week, and sometimes twice on Sundays.'

The priest said, 'That was many years ago and by doing what you did, youplaced the two of you in great danger, but two people under those circumstances can easily succumb to the weakness of the flesh. However, if you are truly sorry for your actions, you are indeed forgiven.'

'Thank you, Father. That's a great load off my mind. I do have one morequestion.''And what is that?' asked the priest.

'Should I tell her the war is over?''

Hello,

This month we are going to look atour feet.

Summer is here, our feet are more exposed and we tend to think aboutthem at this time.

Feet are an interesting part of thehuman anatomy, one of the most usefuland unfortunately the most neglectedparts of our body are our feet. We usethem continuously, strain them walk formiles on them, they take the weight ofour body and yet we forget to take careof their basic needs and comforts. Thereare so many elements of everyday livingthat are absolutely torturous for our feet. For example, our local bar and restaurant staff spend many hoursstanding on their feet. Feet are oftentaken for granted until they start to hurtand reject the burdon we place uponthem. Lack of good care for feet resultin many ailments, such as Bunions,Tinea Pedis, and Ingrowing toe nails.People with diabetes have an increasedrisk for infections. Therefore, it is important that our feet are well cared for.For all of us it is not just the summer

months, but all year round that we needto take care of them.A bunion is a harmless swelling of thejoint of the big toe which is particularlycommon in middle-aged woman. It usually affects both feet. As the jointswells, the skin over it becomes hard, red and tender. The big toe usually becomes displaced, turning inwards towards the other toes. Infections such as Tinea Pedis

commonly know as (Athlete’s Foot) thisis a form of ringworm which affects theskin of the foot. The fungus invades between the toes and can spread to thesoles and side of the feet. The first signsare itching, flaking, cracking and weeping of the skin between the toes. Itis imperative that this is treated. Thelocal pharmacy carry powder andcreams to treat this, however, if it persists you must consult your GPIngrowing toenails, the nails of the bigtoes, are the ones which are most commonly affected. Instead of movingalong the nail bed in the nail groves, thesides of the nail cut into the nail wallcausing skin damage. Inflammation, swelling and pus often occur; the condition has to be treated medically. The two most common causes are ill

INSURING AMOTOR

VEHICLE INSPAIN

TO ADVERTISE IN THE “GRAN ALACANT ADVERTISER” phone: 966 699 167 46

In Spain, as in most Europeancountriesthere are three types ofinsurance for your vehicle. Thirdparty (tercero solo), third party, fire and theft (tercero, contra incedios y robo), and fully comprehensive (todo riesgo). Allinsurance must include the minimum public liability. Manycompanies in Spain will not issuecomprehensive insurance coveror even fire and theft for vehiclesthat are 10 years or more. It ispossible to insure a foreign plated

car here in Spain, but not with aSpanish Company. Most of thecompanies that insure foreignplated vehicles are based inGibraltar.

When you buy a Spanish car froma third party, they may offer tosell the insure to you as it is thevehicle that is insured and not theperson. However, in the event of aclaim being made to the insurance company they will onlypay out to the named policyholder. Therefore, you could havepaid an extra few hundred eurosfor someone elses insurance, paid a lot of money for the vehicleand then are unfortunately involved in an accident. Therewould be no guarantee of compensation. And as we allknow, Insurance Companies willlook for any reason not to pay aclaim.

If your insurance has expired,

Page 47: June 2009 Gran Alacant Advertiser

TO ADVERTISE IN THE “GRAN ALACANT ADVERTISER” phone: 966 699 167 47

then under Spanish law you haveone month to renew your policy. Ifyou exceed the month's graceand are found driving with no insurance the fine would be 1600euros and the loss of penaltypoints.

In the last several months therewas a change in the law regarding Spanish Insurancecover. You are no longer requiredto carry the insurance policy inthe vehicle, it is now sufficient toonly have the receipt of paymentfrom the bank.

The Guardia Civil Trafico vehiclesare all now equipped with a computerised system that identifies the registration numberof Spanish registered vehiclesand will automatically inform thePolice as to whether the car hasinsurance cover.

In next months issue we will be

writing about what to do in theevent of an accident.

Until then SAFE DRIVINGTom and Debbie Milligan

WHAT’S THAT IN THE

CLOT? by Mark Etheridge

The bird in this picture is the rareWhite-headed Duck at the Clot, andhis story could easily be made into afilm, with murder, intrigue, drama and a fair smattering of sex thrown in –why, even Hollywood would be interested as one of the protagonists isAmerican.Cast your mind back to the last century, when during the second of thetwo disagreements between the UK and Germany, Britain was overrunwith American troops with the consequence that a large number of BritishLadies were either whisked back to the USA as GI brides, or left with theinevitable result of some late-night shenanagins.Around the same time, the eminent British naturalist and all-round duckfan Sir Peter Scott decided it would be nice if he introduced some foreignspecies to his wildfowl reserve at Slimbridge. One of the species he collected was an American one called the Ruddy Duck. Unfortunately, they took to the UK like a duck to water (as it were) and many of them escaped the confines of the reserve and a thriving UK population ensued.Being American, they liked to travel, and found that there was a nice corner of South-Western Europe where some of their distant relativeswere living – the White-headed Duck. The female White-headed Ducks were obviously impressed (as were theBritish Ladies) by their American visitors, so much so that several hybridducks began to appear. The Spanish Authorities involved with conservation were outraged by this (as were the British Ladies mums) anddemanded that the British Government do something about it. Thus beganthe hotly-disputed process of shooting the British-bred Ruddy Ducks sothat they could not escape to Spain and ruin the purity of the White-headed Duck bloodline. The arguments still rage about all this, but at least the Spanish White-headed Duck seems to be safe for the moment, with an increasingpopulation from the horrendous lows of the 1970’s when there were only22 birds in the whole of Spain, to today’s estimate of 2,500. The Clot and El Hondo reserve are vitally important areas for the future of this species. The chap in my picture is a male – can you sense the misery in his attitudeas he contemplates the fact that his missus might at this very moment begetting it on with an American visitor? Or perhaps he doesn’t like theSpanish name he has been given of Malvasía Cabeciblanca, which veryroughly translates as grape-coloured whitehead. So when you next seeone on the Clot, spare a little thought for him.

See you next month.

A Glasgow man walks into a bank in Glasgow and asks for the loan officer. He tells the loan officer that he is going to Australia on business for two weeks and needs to borrow £5,000.

The bank officer tells him that the bank will need some form of security for the loan, so the Glasgow lad hands over the keys and documents of new Ferrari parked on the street in front of the bank. He produces the Log Book and everything checks out. The loan officer agrees to accept the car as collateral for the loan. The bank's Manager and its officers all enjoy a good laugh at the rough looking Glaswegian for using a £120,000 Ferrari as collateral against a £5000loan. An employee of the bank then drives the Ferrari into the bank's undergroundgarage and parks it there. Two weeks later, the Glaswegian returns, repays the £5,000 and the interest, which comes to £15.41. The loan officer says, "Sir, we are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction hasworked out very nicely, but we are a little puzzled. While you were away, we checked you out and found that you are a multi millionaire. What puzzles us is, why would you bother to borrow "£5,000" ?

The Glaswegian replies:

"Where else in Glasgow can I park my car for two weeks for only £15.41 and expect it to be there when I return'"

Welcome to the monthly computing column brought to you by David the Computerman (MCSE).

Computer Memory

I often visit clients who complain of a slow computer, and I say to them that they require more memory. They then tell me that they have deleted lots of photos anddocuments in the mistaken belief that this will help. Documents and photos are kepton the Hard Disk, and are not kept in memory until they are required. So, what ismemory, and how is it used?Your computer is made up of lots of individual parts (the hardware) and programmes(the software). When you turn on the computer, the motherboard has a simple programme on it called the BIOS which tells the processor/CPU/chip what is attached to it and how to interact with the hardware. You will often see the lights onthe keyboard, mouse and CD/DVDs flash at start up. These devices are input devicesand the chip now checks to see if there is indeed an input from any one of these devices. If not, the chip has to search for the operating system, which is often, butnot always, on the hard disk. At this point Windows loads up and begins to transfer the programmes that you useinto memory. Your desktop is loaded into memory and all the icons (shortcuts) onyour desktop, and down by the clock are also loaded into memory. It is all these little shortcuts, and programmes, that load themselves at start up that fill the memory, thus leaving your system with less and less system memory to use. Programmes such as Firefox are held on the hard disk and when you click on theicon to open it the chip asks where Firefox is? The hard disk replies “on me,” thechip then asks for it to be sent to memory where the computer can easily use the

programme as required. If you have too many programmes running, or one is hogging the memory, then the computer will slow to a crawl. Check to see if youranti-virus software is running a scan, as this can dramatically slow a computer down. This has very little to do with the size of the hard disk. (The hard disk must have atleast 15% space free to allow it to defragment it).Windows XP needs at least 256Mb of memory (512Mb preferred), to run. WindowsVista needs 1Gb (1000Mb) to run but 2Gb is best. Thus a memory upgrade is thecheapest and easiest way of speeding up a computer. There are currently three types of memory in use today. SDRAM is the oldest and isnow very difficult to get hold of. DDR memory is in computers over three years old,and DDR2 is in newer computers. DDR3 is out now, but is in short supply and is seriously expensive. All memory is speed rated and it is important to matchthe speed of memory to the requirements of yourmotherboard and chip. Memory prices have droppeddramatically over the past five years, but after one ofthe five memory manufacturers went bust at the startof the year, who knows how long this will last.

On a local level, residents of, and visitorsto, the Gran Alacant area are already

inform, educate and entertain." Its motto is 'Rhetoric with Respect'.As you would expect, you and your

opinions will be treated with respect. Noone need be hesitant in writing something

for members to read. Simply show respect and receive respect. Of courseyou don't need to write anything, maybe

as you would a daily newspaper. It is great for that too.

One of the great benefits of recent years is Internet Forums. These Forums have given us easy access to information about

the wide world and the activities of its inhabitants.

“NEW” DISEASES AND CLIMATE CHANGE

We all have heard about climate change and the disasters itmay produce within the followingyears if we can’t manage to moderate its effects and protect theenvironment in a more efficient way.We have been told about thaws, bigdroughts, deserts getting bigger andbigger, etc, but not as much aboutproblems which are already affectingus, caused in one hand by climatechange itself, but in the other handby globalization of the communica-tions. Those problems are related totransmission of some diseases

(mostly parasitic ones), and reactivation of some other diseaseswhich were practically eradicatedfrom the first world a few years ago.

One good example would bethe Leishmaniosis, the famous mosquito disease, a pathology whichmay also affect people (a very uncommon possibility, and non related at all with the fact of livingclose to ill dogs), and whose percentage of cases has been increased in some places of Spainfrom 6 to 9.5% in just a few years, andeven taking into account the

number of cases. This is very important, for example, for importing/exporting dogs: taking tothe UK an infected with Leishmaniosis dog WON’T spread thedisease, because no Phlebotomus(the Mediterranean mosquito specieswhich is the vector of this disease), notransmission. For these reasons, the best way tofight against vectorial diseases iscontrolling the vectors, which consists of using preventive antiparasitic treatments for stoppingthe spreading of these diseases.

prevention we provide nowadays toour pets is the most efficient we’veever had.

Leishmaniosis and all theother “vectorial” diseases, that is, theones whose transmission must beperformed by a vector (normally flea, tick or mosquito), are increasing thenumber of cases according to lifeconditions of vectors: during coldestmonths (average temperature below18ºC) a smaller number of cases arereported because vectors normallydon’t survive low temperatures, butwhen temperatures rise over 18ºCmosquitoes become active and startcarrying the disease from dog to dog.As you can imagine, not every mosquito species transmit every vectorial disease. Due to this, the distribution of vectorial diseases willvary depending on the weather conditions of every zone: the betterconditions for the vector, the higher

Silver Jubilee of the

Inter Club This week saw the twenty-fifth anniversaryof Gran Alacantʼs Inter Club, one of the regionʼs oldest social gatherings for UK ex-pats, together with, and as the namesuggests, friends of other nationalities.

The full registered name of the club is theInternational Club of Arenales, but this fullname is seldom used these days, especially as it is now based in Gran Alacant.

On Thursday night, over seventy guestscelebrated the longevity and continued success of this popular club, which continues to meet every Thursday eveningat the Restaurant Marie Jose in Av.Noruega in Gran Alacant.

After an excellent meal, provided by Mariaand Paco, there was a short ʻSilver Jubileeʼquiz, and then guests danced into ʻtomorrowʼ to the sounds of yesteryear provided by popular duo Ameritz.

Guests of honour for the evening were theoriginal president of the club, Jim Feary together with Jill his charming wife, whowere presented with a gift from currentPresident Bob Newby, and Jill, his wife.

Jim entertained the guests with a speechthat wandered down memory lane, reminding everyone that when the club wasformed there was only one shop anywherein the area, no transport facilities, only oneor two restaurants and bars, and Gran Alacant was just a figment of someoneʼs

future fertile imagination.

However, there were many characters inthe area, and Jim brought smiles from allwith his accounts of their various exploits, some of which may be too risqué to printhere!

Jim, who was President for the first twelveyears of the Inter Clubʼs existence, outlinedthe way in which the club evolved, and giving great examples of where membership of the club not only provided asocial outlet, but also a support system forthose in need.

Currently, and for many years past, the clubhas raised funds for a local charity, Cotolengo, which is run by nuns and helpsboth the severely physically and mentallyless able. The club continues with weeklycash collections from members, donationsfrom club funds, and collections of clothingand other items that can be sold or used.

Apart from the regular Thursday dinner-dances, dinner-quizzes etc., there isalso a thriving painting group who meetweekly, and on the 28th May, a car rally isbeing held in the afternoon prior to the normal Thursday evening function.

Why not meet new friends by ringing one ofthe committee members, Bob, Francis orJan on 966697439, 9666695052,966697754 respectively; you wonʼt be sorryyou did.

The photo below shows the President. hislady and the guests of honour, the club'sfirst President Jim Feary and his lady Jill

"available for short termholiday let"

Hello,My neighbours and I were horrified to findthe train had gone up from 1 Euro to 1.50.this is a 50% increase and all being pensioners not very happy! When the train first started it was so handyto hop on it instead of taking the bus nowthe bus is cheaper! It seems that the touristis being catered for (especially where pricesare concerned) after all this is a residentialarea and not a tourist resort, why anyone would want to comehere for a holiday (unless visiting ) I cannot imagine, I certainly would not comehere for a holiday! We have a few suggestions which maybecould be passed on via yourselves to thetrain management.A season ticket for say 3 or 6 months.Reduced rates for pensioners.Reduced rates for residents or people whoown property here. One or two stops a 1 Euro and 1.50 for thefull trip (mostly tourists take the full trip.)A book of tickets at a cheaper price whichcould be used as and when required. We miss our trips on the train and thefriendly drivers but for the moment all wecan do is wave as the train passes by!

From Annie and her neighbours.

Hi Barry and Sandra,As an IT consultant can I firstly congratulateyou on your website and your "web basedpage turning magazine" which is really quitegroovy. I do enjoy being able to keep up todate with the news in Gran Alacant from rainyIreland. My question is, is there any possibility of thecouncil reopening the pathway that ran fromthe Carabassi Complex through the El Clotnature reserve to Los Arenales. I don't have acar in Spain and this was my short cut to boththe beach and to Los Arenales itself. I knowthe original path was not a properly maintained route but it was always very busy.I had presumed they were awaiting funds toimprove it, not abandon it.I'm sure the commercial units would also appreciate the reopening of the path as itwould allow additional business to comefrom the new apartment complexes in LosArenales.

Cheers,Cormac

SLS Lessons of the Month www.spanishlanguagesite.com

The learning of the SpanishLanguage supplied

by Matthew Brock

Preposition ´a´

You won’t be speaking Spanish for verylong before you come across this preposition. You usually start with themeaning of ‘to’ when used with the verb ‘to go’, ‘ir’. It is handy in this respect because it means ‘to’ when saying ‘to go to a place’, and‘to be going to do something’.

Here are a couple of examples:

1) ‘Yesterday I went to the beach’ – ‘ayerfui a la playa’2) ‘Tomorrow I’m going to eat anomelette’ – ‘mañana voy a comer una tortilla’

It also means ‘to’ when introducing anamed indirect object pronoun, as in ‘I gave the present to James’ – ‘di elregalo a Jaime’

There are other uses, though:

1) It is often used to connect a verb witha following infinitive:a. ‘Ha venido a hablar conmigo’ – ‘he hascome to speak to me’b. ‘Comencé a llorar’ – ‘I started to cry’2) It is used in expressions of time tomean ‘at’:a. ‘Salió a las 4’ – ‘he went out at 4o’clock’3) It is often used to show how something is done:a. ‘Fueron a pie’ – ‘they went on foot’b. ‘Lo hicieron a mano’ – ‘they did it byhand’4) It is used to introduce a direct objectthat is a person, but since this causesespecial difficulty, I want to deal with thisuse of ‘a’ another time.
